I go for volume food ... I try to have fresh/raw fruits and/or vegs with all meals, and I try to use whole grains wherever possible. It creates a sense of fullness that lasts for a long time for me. Fibre seems to be my friend here. The higher my fibre count, the less hungry I am during deficit days. On the other hand, if…

S***w what anyone else thinks. You're doing this for you. If you want to do it, just do it! Some people will judge you, while others who have been there (like me) will be giving you a silent high five as they pass by. You may need to ease your way into it, to reduce the pounding on your knees. You might consider walking at…

Very sensible! Congrats on your results!

Thanks for that link. The Total Calories Burned per Mile is very close to the figures my HRM and GPS show, and the number quoted earlier is closer to the Net Calories Burned per Mile. Makes sense now.

Good thinking. Now, 50 lbs for your 2016 birthday ... that is certainly feasible. Set that as your target.
-
Given that you've lost 22 lbs in 3 months, or about 7 a month, on 1200 cals/day, I think you have your answer ... 50 lbs in 3.5-4 months just isn't going to happen. You're likely looking at a further ~20 lbs between now and then ... which is nothing to grumble about. <note: edited likely achievable weight loss for time…

@carliekitty - That's an interesting formula. It works out to about 1/3 less than what my HRM and other calculators indicate when I'm out for a walk. I've figured out where I need to be for my CICO balance, so I'm not terribly bothered by the exact numbers, but I am curious about how/where you got your figures.

That's a tall order. Depending on when in Oct you mean, that's ~3 lbs per week on average, and not generally advised. You should probably back off that goal a bit. Out of curiosity, how much have you lost in your first month to date?

It did ... until I started replying that "I'm back to my university years fitness level". That leaves them speechless. I can see their mind turning over, wishing they could turn back the clock too.

I'm 50+, but now in better shape than all of my 40s, and even some of my 30s. My "secret"? ... eat less, move more ... and give it a bit of time. What worked for me? Walking first, then elliptical, with some lifting thrown in for good measure ... but most importantly, a net calorie deficit. Good luck and enjoy!

Congrats bud! Always great to see your posts, and learn from your experience.

Well, as I just ploughed through a box of Jaffa cakes, also having a serious case of the F-its myself today, I can take solace in the knowledge that one of my most kick-*** friends here is going through it too! I am now inspired to wipe off the chocolate, dust off the crumbs, lace up my shoes, and put my CICO numbers back…

I can relate. I dropped from 279 to 174, and I didn't start feeling happy until I hit 199, and I wasn't ecstatic until I hit 179. I was frustrated that I was unhappy, but I kept at it. Congrats on your achievement so far, and keep at it. At some point, you will start feeling happy, and you'll really enjoy it. Until then,…

As the "guy above", I've been thinking about my response, and I've come to the same conclusion. I did have a bigger room room for deficit, had higher start and end points, and exercised my tail off. I too think the OP should scale back her expectations. Note that I did not set out to lose the weight that quickly. I had a 2…

I believe you have answered your own question. Best of luck to you. I have a friend who beats on me to join her vegan eating lifestyle, claiming it's the healthiest way to live. I stuck with my CICO omnivore plan and dropped 100 lbs. She went the "I can eat anything I want because it's vegan" and added 30 lbs in that same…

I think you'll find your 2.5 lb / week target relatively easy at the outset, but once you get down under 180-200, it will be more challenging, and you may need to taper down sooner. You'll know when you get there, your body will tell you. If you are going too quickly, there will be signs, such as fatigue. I had to throttle…

Having done it - from 279 to 175 in 9 months - it can be done, but you have to be incredibly focused ... one might say obsessed. I would recommend a 2 year plan instead. Go for about 65 in your first year, and 35 in your second year. Definitely keep up with the weights all the way through. If I could turn back time, I…

Work your way slowly to your maintenance target, rather than jumping all at once. With small increases over a few weeks, you can tune it until you find your set point. Best of luck!

Welcome to the "almost 100 lbs down club"! Just keep doing what you've been doing ... keep logging so that you are still getting the right quantity and quality of food, and keep exercising. Keeping true to your food quantity, food quality and activity levels are all you need.

^^^This I've dropped 100 lbs. When I set off, I was a bit worried about loose skin. I have some now. What I find is that I am way happier at 100 lbs off with a bit of loose belly skin, versus 100 lbs obese, with growing health and fitness issues. I may have loose skin, but I also have much lower blood pressure, fantastic…

As @jemhh says, I don't think MFP will suggest anything lower than 1200. My it is expected that your calorie needs will decrease as you lose weight. If you want to have a play with numbers, try http://scoobysworkshop.com/accurate-calorie-calculator/

If you take 100g of dry lentils, noted as 353 cals, and you cook them, and eat ALL of the lentils you just cooked, then you will ingest those same 353 cals. Looking at the numbers you provided, the resultant weight of the *cooked* lentils - given the absorbed water - should be about 300 g.

For me, the elliptical, because of my knees. For you, the one you prefer, and will stick with. Of course, you could alternate between the two.
-
I'll second this advice. At 51, and obese, I couldn't do anything but walk, and even that was painful. Between diet and walking, I dropped 75 lbs. By this point, I was in much better shape, and transitioned to lifting, and "running" on the elliptical machine at the gym. Don't worry about what you can't do just yet ... make…

Been there, done that, bought the (much smaller) t-shirt. Just like @rabbitjb said: "weigh, log, keep a deficit, move more, be patient". Good luck!

@usmcmp - I've seen your posts across the forums, I've followed your flat stomach thread, and now, after seeing this, the above clip and mantra played over and over in my mind. My droopy navel and I thank you! ETA - respect to you too, @blankiefinder

Great progress. Keep it up!
-
I think @JoRocka nailed it - respect! I'll just add that I lost ~75 lbs with walking and diet (knee problems prevented running), and dropped a further 25 lbs switching to elliptical and lifting, while still maintaining a deficit. If I were to do anything differently, I would have started off with walking and lifting, to…

I must find this! Or will I cry when I they tell me that it's US-only, and not at UK Krispy Kreme? ETA: Good new, for me, at least! "Sounds (and looks) incredible, right? But don't get your hopes up — unless you live in the United Kingdom." Source
