  • Finished the 24h last weekend- 75 miles, putting me in 4th place overall female. It was a great experience, with an awesome group of volunteers and two great co- RDs. It was a real learning experience for me, from how/ when to change shoes, to overnight running with a headlamp, to 24h nutrition, to the bane of all distance…
  • I used to wear the CEP socks but have switched to the CEP sleeves. The socks get funny in the foot after washing, and I also like being able to wear different socks (and changing socks when needed during a race.) I find this to be too much of a challenge with the compression socks, but super easy with the sleeves, since I…
  • I am just about to retire my first pair. I rotate through several- two sizes of Stinson trail and two of the Stinson Tarmac (plus an additional one that I put screws into for winter running.) I haven't ever tracked mileage per pair, but they seem to last for a very long time.
  • I based my plan on Relentless Forward Progress as well. Great read.
  • Hokas are the best. Shoes. Ever. They got me through 6 50k runs, 2 50 milers and a 24h trail race (75 miles) over the last 11 months. The 24h was last weekend and I was out again running today. I'm a huge fan of the Stinsons, but didn't like the feel of the mafates- they feel sloppy and a little stiff to me. Hokas aren't…
  • How did I miss that?!?
  • I don't like tailwind either- to me it tastes like drinking seawater. I think you are the first person that hasn't raved about it, and I was beginning to think i was missing something!
  • Transition your long runs to trails. If not every week, then every other week. If that's not possible you can point to Zach Miller (who has won his only two 50s and trained on a treadmill and in the stairwell of a cruise ship) and say "he did it, so can I!" Just kidding though; specificity is your friend. Figure out what…
  • The one I'm doing (along with Zekela) next weekend records distance and time, no matter how far or long you run. However 24h is the only option, so I don't know if there would be a DNF for a 24 h if other there were other time options available. Last year distances ranged from 12.5 to 106.25 mi.
  • Not necessarily no run, but potentially no race. Clearly if you're training for 100mi you're probably doing back to back long runs that take you into the realm of the 50+ mile weekend. But it would be feasible to start thinking ahead and plan accordingly. I have no doubt that Horton's students likely did his 50k as their…
  • Guess I'm getting here a little late to the game. Yeah, Zekela and I are doing this 24h thing in just over a week. I still have ankle issues so I may be biting off more than I can chew. But for me the goal is just to keep going. I will be doing a 100 miler in August, and I have never run in the middle of the night, on…
  • David Horton is a legend. His chapter in Relentless Forward Progress was one of the deciding factors in running 50 miles 10 weeks after my first marathon. For the record, there was no "fear of missing out" in my case. I had already been accepted into JFK 50, which was scheduled for almost 6 months later. I just wanted to…
  • I meant to add that the irunfar site is run by the guy who wrote "relentless forward progress."
  • Definitely do a 50 first, but with your mileage you could definitely do it. Relentless Forward Progress (mentioned above) has training plans for 100 milers based on 50 and 70 mpw. The nice thing about 24h trail races is they are an opportunity to run trails at night (not exactly a safe training prospect for women) and it…
  • I do most runs fasted, up to about 20-24mi. It was difficult when I first started, but I have adapted. For a while at the beginning I used BCAA's to reduce protein and muscle breakdown (Scivation Xtend.) However I haven't done this for the past year or so. When I do 50k training runs I will train using the fuel I plan to…
  • You can use sheet metal screws (instructions here: http://www.skyrunner.com/screwshoe.htm.) However goat head sole spikes (which Zekela has) screw in just like the sheet metal variety, yet they are thicker and have more bite to them. You can find the 3/8" sheet metal screws at a hardware store; goat head sole spikes are at…
  • I love my Salomon advanced skin s lab 5 set (say that 10 times fast!) I have the older model with the bladder, and the two main front pockets can each hold standard 20 oz water bottles as well. Great fit (they make an xs/s) and no bounce! They aren't cheap, but you can probably get one for a lot less than retail. They have…
  • I had this happen about a year ago. I have a high arch and femoral anteversion, which leads to supination and striking on the outside of my foot. I read quite a bit (one of my favorite articles was this: http://www.irunfar.com/2012/10/is-your-plantar-fasciitis-plantar-fasciitis-and-what-to-do-about-it.html.) I found that…
  • Best shoes ever. I don't run on the road, but the Stinson Tarmacs are fine for trails, though on more technical trails I prefer the Stinson Trails. I even took a pair of Tarmacs (they're quite smooth) and outfitted them with Goat Head Sole Spikes (sheet metal screws on steroids) for an AWESOME snow/ice shoe. I do agree…
  • Great race report! I have been intrigued by slot canyons- the thought of running an ultra in and around one sounds amazing. Clearly a tough course- great job!
  • I don't think that rhabdo would be a big deal on a 31mi run, but you never know. As far as ultras go, I tend to be an optimist, and I also like to do things that scare me. So I totally get the OP. Reading on, I'm almost sorry you decided against it- I was kinda curious to see how it went- but volunteering is awesome. For…
  • The difference between two hours and ten is a huge mental leap. I was about to say that the elevation profile doesn't look too bad- then I realized it was in meters, not feet! You WILL walk, you will be in pain, but if you have the right mental attitude, you can make it. Start by walking all of the up hills (even…
  • That looks like a beautiful course! I was trying to figure out which 50 would be in the NC area- I could only think of WC-50 in October and Umstead in April. :)
  • I was unfortunate enough to have an 8hr timed run with Aunt Flo on Saturday. The last loop could not be started after the 7hr mark, so I only ran for 7:23, but I definitely was grateful that there was a bathroom for the inevitable tampon swap. Had I been on a course without facilities I would've had to pack it out in a…
  • Yeah, I've looked at speedgoat- tougher 50k than most 50milers. Distance is definitely relative (to elevation profile and terrain) when it comes to trails. Try explaining to someone that only does road races (or doesn't run at all) that you're shooting for a 12:30 mile though, and they will look at you like you're nuts.…
  • Definitely 30- regardless of wind/snow/etc. As soon as it gets into the teens, I would prefer 80.
  • As for timing in general, they say to take your road marathon time and triple it for a trail 50. I found this was spot on- my first (and only) road marathon was 4:04; my first trail 50 was 12:04. Training for a 100k in March and my first 100mi in August. I'm lucky enough to have a great trail running group with several…
  • I ran my first 50 miler 10 weeks after my first marathon, and had never run trails until 8 weeks before the first 50. There were a few things that made me believe I could do this. The first was volunteering at a 50 mile ultra. I was fortunate to be at miles 26 and 40 and saw the runners both at the marathon mark and with…
  • Check out John Vonhof's "fixing your feet." Sometimes just making sure your toenails are trimmed makes a big difference. I've done a few 50ks and 2 50 milers, and never had a black toenail, but my shoes are 1/2 size larger than "normal" and I trim my toenails down before any run over 20 miles.
  • Zach Miller, who won the JFK 50 in November, had been working on a cruise ship and training on a treadmill...I have to think he would've done at least a marathon in his training. If I had to do it, I'd have a video of The Runner (documentary of David Horton's FKT running of the PCT) or Unbreakable, the Western States…
