If your goal is to lose 23 lb (10% of 227), please keep in mind that without significant protein, much of that weight loss is going to be lean muscle mass. Even if you eat enough protein you are going to lose muscle. Thats just the way this works.

I had a nasty Diet Coke habit and have been water only for over a month. To be honest, I thought it would make me feel better than it has. But after going through caffeine withdrawal I think I'm good not doing that any more and it has helped curb some of the carb cravings. In my experience outside of avoiding sugary drinks…

I was actually a little surprised watermelon had as many calories as it does when I had some recently (read: an admittedly enormous piece). I thought it was "98% water".

I actually had a good friend that worked at Breyers HQ a few years ago. They shrank half gallon (64oz) to 56oz and added more "whip". Essentially all it did was add air to the cream so it wasn't as dense. The container looked the same, fewer calories, etc. But it was decidedly just a way for them to make more money. Less…

I know exactly what moderation means. It also means different things to different people. And while there is room in almost all diets for empty calories, there needs to be more discussion around here about the costs of a lack of balance in diets. Because the repeated battlecry of "all calories are created equal" is not a…

Quest bars. Almost nothing but protein and fiber. Mmmm.

Well I got big because I ate the foods I liked which included a robust amount of junk food. So having revered members of this community tell me I can eat that stuff, just to measure and track it was a way for me to deal with my journey back with a little more comfort. But in my world, eating small portions of "bad" foods…

Thanks, this is exactly what I was looking for. Do you have more energy when you are in ketosis? I find myself getting tired more than I would like.
-
I don't know why we are arguing. I agree with everything you are saying. When people say CICO and that it doesn't matter what your calories are its pretty easy to take it as "eat junk food, just less". And its been my experience that this doesn't work.

Please don't do this. If you are burning anywhere near 800 calories/day and are eating 1200 you are doing damage to yourself and will not be able to continue to work on your health. I think this is simply a time issue. A great many people struggle to document their caloric intake as well, which is why that tends to be the…

I don't know which fad diets specify the necessity of ketosis as I don't believe in fad diets. However, the low carb thing seems to be sticking longer than any other "fad". I have a family history of glucose issues and have been eating fewer carbs for a few years now. I'm just trying to figure out if there is value in…

I'm not arguing your diet at all. Looks great to me. Merely the notion that it doesn't matter where your calories come from. Because if you aren't eating vitamin rich foods it IS going to be more difficult to stay within your calories, to stick to the diet long term, etc.

Sounds like you have only been on this for a short period of time. You have to have patience. If you eat something with some salt in it you can take on water weight. Depending on your cycle you might be taking on some water weight. If you haven't been doing this for a month its too soon to demand results. But keep it up.…

I am completely onboard with CICO. But I am also trying to lose weight to feel better. And you feel better when you eat vitamin rich products than when you eat doritos/donuts/cake. And a 500 calorie salad with protein and healthy fat is going to be more satiating than 500 calories of the aforementioned stuff. So, while on…

I had a kid. And not being able to do the things that Dads do was just not on the table. Once you realize how important your health is its likely pretty late and its high time to get it done.

So should we calibrate calories to reflect 1.5-2 kC/g Fiber? Because it is recognized differently in every product. I'm getting ~50-75g fiber a day. Thats 100-150 calories a day difference.

Back on the horse now. Workouts are still extremely limited but I am eating at a substantial deficit and hopefully losing weight and eating healthy will help my recovery.

If you weighed twice as much it would be conceivable. But from 230 to 200 is losing 14% of your weight and a complete impossibility. I mean you could maybe lose 20 if you are really unhealthy about it then sit in a sauna to lose another 10 pounds of water weight. But these would be awful choices and wouldn't be losing…

Yeah, I've been in PT for 3 mos. The surgeon told me I'd be back on my feet in weeks and playing basketball in 3 months. My PT (after 3 mos+) just told me I should probably never play basketball again and I had another 3 months of recovery time (which would put me over 6 mos; WAYYYYY longer the the weeks I was promised…

When I drink I DRINK. And looking back at it all there is no question those calories are a big reason how I got fat in the first place. But 3 glasses of wine a week? Not a chance.

NOOOOOooooo. Ask your "dietition" what degrees and certifications they have. It sounds like they get their title from the supplement company that is undoubtedly selling you something.

I grew up in the age where everyone said fat was the devil. I still catch myself thinking it every now and again. Just get your fat from nuts, avocados, olive oil, lean meat, etc and you will be fine even if you go way over your allotted fat. Everytime I see people complain about not getting enough protein I shake my head.…

I'll readily admit the whole thing destroyed me. I went from killing myself at the gym to literally not moving more than a handful of times during the day. I allowed myself to eat stuff that I hadn't eaten in ages. Even the good stuff I was eating was devoured at rates that were harmful. And when I tried to get back into…

This is exactly where I am. I had what I thought was a lingering muscle injury turn into something SUBSTANTIALLY more significant. I was OUT for a mo pre-op then 2+ post-op. I'm finally at a place where I can hop on a bike again but I live in WI so its all done inside this time of year. I finally feel good again as being…

How am I the only one to ever get hurt??

There are a multitude of medical issues (and accompanying meds) that lead to weight gain. Quite a few of them are things I wouldn't discuss with co-workers. But almost certainly she is making excuses for her inability to lose weight.

What everyone else is saying. If your blood pressure is not an issue and there is no family history of related issues its probably not the end of the world. But having eaten pretty cleanly for a while I can really tell when I'm retaining water. And at 6'5" we can retain quite a bit. Drink lots of water and eat fresh. That…

To be honest this thread makes me feel a little uncomfortable. I feel like I have finally gained some power over food and finally understand the impact of what I am eating and its affects on my body. I'm down quite a bit and I plan on losing more. But I DO so the finish line from where i am at and to me this sounds…

Lots of good advice. I would just add that losing weight doesn't mean losing fat. Without protein and exercise a lot of that weight loss is muscle. Don't lose muscle. Without getting your calories right you simply can't lose weight. But there are a lot of reasons why you want to have the proper balance in your diet. I will…

You have been great for three weeks but that is simply not a set of habits conducive to long term health. Eat your BMR and celebrate your clothes fitting better, your increased health, etc and worry about the weight after a far longer period of time. Successful dieting is NOT about punishing yourself for a few weeks to…
