  • Oh that was fantastic. It is now bookmarked for further entertainment... I mean recipe inspiration.
  • This sounds mighty familiar... I think I followed the same program for my first half back in May. I felt kind of like death making the jump from 8 miles to 9 for the first time and then again going from 10 to 11. If you aren't using walk breaks, don't be afraid of them if they help you avoid feel awful. The Chia seed idea…
  • ETA- annoying duplicate
  • I'm using the new rules of lifting for women as a guideline for my workouts. It's a pretty quick read, I recommend it. I'm using it's first stage right now but since my focus is running, and lifting to complement that, to give you an example of taking a set program and making it work for you, I am doing essentially half of…
  • 1. Racquetball 2. Running
  • I trained for my first half at a deficit. I was aiming for .5 loss a week. That is about what it ended up being. I had to make sure on my long run days I ate more than on my shorter mid week runs. But not by a ton. Do you take anything with you to eat on your long runs? I like to take some Honey Zinger chews around mile 6.…
  • If you aren't huffing and puffing and unable to breathe, and haven't gotten hurt... you have found a good pace for you. Don't worry about averages since everyone is different. If you keep at it and go at a pace that you keep feeling the way you do now, as you start running longer and farther, your pace will naturally get…
  • I currently wear it as undergarment. That being said, when I was at my fittest... many moons ago, I did not hesitate to wear it as a top on its own while running outside if it was a super hot and humid day. I would always keep a shirt on in the gym though... I like the extra layer between me and whatever equipment I'm…
  • I use dumbbells for everything right now... including things people typically use a bar for... squats and dead lifts. I'm not sure why I still use them for the squats... probably because I don't really know how to use the squat rack. But I use them for the dead lifts because I can't yet lift enough weight to get the bar…
  • I've found Motley Crue has an ish ton of really awesome songs to work out to. So does AC/DC.

  • You are bound to have bad runs, especially in the beginning. Listen to what your body is telling you... every run doesn't need to be balls out.
  • You have done little to no working out for the last 2-3 years right? An 8:30 pace seems pretty quick for just starting back into working out again. Watch that you don't over work too much in the beginning.
  • "I can't eat enough calorie!!!" .... found anywhere other than the gaining weight board.
  • This is all very good advice. I'll add don't start out too hard and try to rush through the program. I like to cross train on a the erg at the gym on my off days too. I thought I would swim, but I really couldn't force myself to get over hating the water even though I knew it would be a good break for my joints. Picking…
  • Most recently my favorite song to run to is Girls Girls Girls- Motley Crue
  • I would suggest 3 things- 1. cut back to one run a day. 2. don't run EVERY day. 3. check with a doc.
  • I bought the book the New Rules of Lifting for Women. I read it. I read some of it again. Then I started picking things up and putting them down and did it again. It's kind of confusing the way the workouts are explained when you read it the first time through. But it has a lot of really good information and it's a pretty…
  • I'm really just here for MyChocolateDiet and her gifs... but I'll pipe in with a "don't do it" just in case.
  • These boys got me through my first half marathon 23 minutes faster than planned!
  • I started with a 7lb and quickly moved up to 15lb. There were certain moves I had to keep using the lighter bell for while the heavier one was fine. I recently moved from 15lb to 25lb. Again, the same moves I had to use the 15lb for while the 25lb was not a problem. The most problematic for me with the heavier weight was…
  • Check out buffalorunners.com they list all of the area races and I think they even include some in the Rochester area. I know there is a half in october in Jamestown... it's I Love Lucy themed and I will probably run it next year. I think the Mighty Niagara in Niagara Falls is in September. I have never run that but I have…
  • In my youth, I was a sprinter... racing the 400m was like my world was ending. I went through a training academy where I had to run several miles at a time, at someone else's way too fast pace. I hated it and it felt like work (it was technically!) Last year after trying to start 3 times, I finished C25K. I learned to like…
  • This gal has my go to potato leek soup recipe... it's fantastic!! http://simplyhealthyfam.blogspot.com/2011/02/potato-leek-soup-makeover.html I really recommend using the dry white wine as recommended if you don't avoid alcohol. Don't worry about the "French grey sea salt" just regular sea salt is fine. The thyme, in my…
  • Soups, I have a potato leek recipe that is healthy AND amazing if you would be interested. Scrambled eggs with finely chopped cooked veggies. Cottage cheese. Oatmeal with finely cut cooked fruit. Apple sauce.
  • I my runs are to be outside, they are done early morning or late evening. I make sure to hydrate more than normal and slow down.. way down. My non-air conditioned gym is sweltering too but at least the sun isn't also baking me so I do a lot in there. Of it's really unbearable, I take to the treadmill in my basement with a…
  • After you have worn them for awhile, you will find you can eat pretty much any normal, healthy food... just nothing like apples or carrots that might pop a bracket off. The couple of days right after an adjustment you will want to stick with the softer foods that will be more gentle on your teeth. I liked oatmeal,…
  • What distances are you doing right now? You should be find with just a bottle of water.... Yeah, I missed the part where you were walking the whole thing and not doing a 5K. On my long runs, I take water and honey zingers in my fuel belt, my cell phone, my ID, and my headphones.
  • I can't comment on how either one links to an iPhone, I never used them that way. I do own a Polar and a Garmin. The actual counting of the heart rate seems pretty accurate when I compare to what I count myself periodically. I'm not sure about the caloric burn accuracy though for either... they are both really just…
  • Are you interested in accuracy for heart rate or the GPS function?
  • It sounds like everyone in your group is interested in cooking at the campsite. Are they all health conscious as well? You guys could all choose one day that you will be there and each bring the main course food for that day. When we camp I always do chicken. It might just be chicken breasts in marinade (put the chicken…
