  • My usual go to breakfast is a two egg omelet with peppers, onions, and ham. On the side I have 4 or 5 grape tomatoes and a ring of fresh pineapple. Now that I have figured out how to make omelets without burning or breaking them, I get the eggs going and slice up the tomatoes and pineapple while it cooks. Total time is not…
  • \m/ yup, yup, yup! Metal and bagpipes.... yeah, bagpipes.
  • Incredible results!! I did stage 1, day 1 today.... I hope my results are even half as awesome as yours are. Well done!
  • Find yourself a nice flavored coffee you like and try that. I still use half and half in mine, but managed to get down to no sugar from drinking double doubles. I cut the sugar down gradually. Sometimes I use a splash of flavored creamer too. Not a lot though. Most of them are even too sweet now. It might take some time,…
  • What are your required times? Are you in now or trying to qualify? I would be more concerned with bringing your outside time down, so do more of your runs outside- the treadmill you can just "set it and forget it." Keep working your long runs. When I had a mile and a half requirement (ugh- many many years ago now) we…
  • I just ran my first half yesterday... and it was amazing!! My suggestion is to not consume anything on the day of the race that you haven't trained with. Eat the same breakfast you would eat the morning of your long run. If you haven't trained gels or blocks on your long runs, skip them for the race. I tried cliff blocks…
  • I can't offer you a true been there done that kind of support or advice but I can applaud you for coming here and being ready to make a change. Don't worry about being perfect and all the nitty gritty details of eating only so many carbs or so much fat... especially in the beginning. Figure out what your caloric burn is…
  • I had pizza for dinner tonight... it was really good, the best I've had since I worked in the Bronx. The thought never even crossed my mind to weigh it... would I have measured the cheese separate from the crust and reassembled? If I make my own, I weight each thing that goes on it and divide by the number slice. But from…
  • How many times a week had/have you been running? Always in the same 3-8 mile range? If you decide you think it's mental, which it sounds like if you have run 8 in the past and now struggle getting through 2, you might benefit from a break. I have taken a week off running completely here and there and I've found it really…
  • Perhaps without even consciously thinking about it, you are pushing harder than your normally would because, "hey, it's only two miles, I run more than this all the time." Maybe check your pace...
  • You might just be able to leave it out entirely.... I've made those flavored noodle pouches before that call for 2 tablespoons... I never use any, and they taste just the same... I'm not sure if it works the same way as tuna helper.
  • I have both. I like my Garmin because I run. I like my Polar because sometimes I crosstrain on machines like a recumbent bike. A lot of the machines come ready to tether to the polar chest straps but won't with the Garmin. I have the 610, so my Polar was much much cheaper than that was. I broke down and bought the Garmin…
  • I back in-- I can make a quick get away if need and not worry about backing over a texting pedestrian zombie in any random parking lot.
  • This certainly sheds some light on things me thinks.... Pick a realistic goal, plenty of people have said that a half is certainly realistic. Do C25K. Follow up with Galloway, use the run-walk-run method. Make sure to get fitted for shoes, and replace them as needed. Read up on fueling, and hydration and the appropriate…
  • I don't know how to make things bolded, so I need to quote the whole stinking thing. OP- I am going to ask you an absolutely serious question, in no way, shape, or form am I judging you... Did you choose the marathon as the distance because you thought that anything less wouldn't show how much you really want to help your…
  • Today is my day off. How serendipitous that I finished my own 11 miles this morning and was able to come back and enjoy this today!
  • Hey pot, didn't you reference a lack of reading comprehension several times earlier in the thread?
  • C25K- May 2013-August 2013. 4 mile trail race 5k-10K Bridge- August 2013-October 2013 10K race 1:02- October 5K race 34:00- November November- 1 month break from running due to unpredictable and extremely long work hours January 2014- begin half marathon training- Goal race, May 25, 2014 Mid January 2014-Mid February 2014-…
  • ^^ This too! I thought it was just me. No way I could run two laps of my 5.5 mile loop. Physically sure, mentally-- not a chance. I don't understand why it just is what it is.
  • Some races do have time limits. I think you will see that that equation is a bit simple to calculate finishing time. I am currently training for a half marathon. I know that on a long run of 10-11 miles my early miles are a much faster pace than my last few. You will need to account for slowing down as you burn through…
  • The scale is just one tool to use to measure your progress. Use it along with tape measurements, how you look in the mirror, how you FEEL, and my favorite... jeans fresh out of the dryer. As long as your general trend over time is downward you'll be on the right track.
  • Yep- I have found this as well. I have also found that when I do opt for something like pizza, it better be GOOD pizza. If it's crappy run of the mill stuff, no thanks. I'd rather spend the time to make my own and load it up with all the veggie toppings I want and the different cheeses I want.
  • Like Dav said, it's early, I wouldn't get to worried yet. That first run 3 is less than a half mile away from a 5k anyway. I can't remember what mine looked like, though I suspect there would have been ups and downs... I can't remember how the time increases went as the program progressed. It's easy to hope to improve your…
  • This sounds really good! Thanks for posting it.
  • I do something 6 days a week.... Just not running. Sometimes it's walking... sometimes I walk later in the day after I have already run. Do you have a gym membership? I love the erg on my non-run days.
  • I thought I had read on a few different training sites, which escape me now, because it was more in passing as I am no where near ready for it yet, that one should have at least a year of running under their belt before starting to even TRAIN for their first marathon. I wish you luck on this endeavor and hope you can…
  • I agree with this. I've been running for about a year and my body is just now getting to where I can run two days back to back. It's definitely not ready for 6 days a week yet. Your body will guide you.
  • Too many carbs will make you fat if it puts you over your maintenance level. But so would too much fat or protein if it pushes you over that threshold. Some people cut them because of medical issues. I personally don't eat tons of bread or pasta because I feel like a bag o'crap after (so says the girl who indulged in…
