First, OP, congratulations on your persistence! You've made excellent points. I've come to the not all that remarkable conclusion that the tools and strategies that longer-term and/or more overweight people need to adapt for effective weight loss aren't the same as those that someone who needs to lose 10-20 pounds. Perhaps…

If you and your mom live together, try to get her to understand that at least for now, it's hard for you to resist them and to please not buy them. If they are in the house and you can''t resist the temptation, take two or three bites and put the rest in the garbage disposal and immediately run it. The 2-3 bites will…

My TSH levels are quite uneven, so I'm tested every 6-12 weeks depending on whether they've been up or down the last time. I agree very much with your last sentence, and I think it's not just rationalization. For those of us for whom losing the weight is a bigger challenge, as well as an ongoing battle to keep it off,…

It is hard, but you can be a great role model for all of them if you make a point of trying to stick to the "plan" even while eating out. My husband loves to eat out and it's really hard to keep on track when eating out--the bread with olive oil to dip it in before the main dish, large portions, a cocktail or wine, etc. I…

I'm a big proponent of having a little cake and a litle ice cream or whatever it is. Usually the minute I cut a slice in half someone chimes in and says "What a good idea! Can I have the other half?" And the beauty of a small portion to start is you can have seconds if you like it. There are very few desserts that are…

i'm short (5'4"), old-ish (54) and have hypothyroidism that's hard to stabilize. I think that means I'm really REALLY in trouble!

If you can, try a weeks' membership at any gym you're considering before you join. If there are multiple gyms available, including the no-frills 24/hour places, try all of them and see what appeals to you. Being locked into $50-$100 month for a year or more and not getting your money's worth is not someone most people want…

I'm a pretty pragmatic person, and I want my weight loss formula to be based on what's realistic for me, so I do what I think I can sustain for the long run. There is no way in my current life I could go to the gym 5-6 times a week, so I don't think it's reasonable or realistic to build that into the new habits I am trying…

I tend to weight myself most mornings after getting up, wearing PJs, and after using the bathroom. I weigh myself occasionally at the gym and on occasion, during the day at home on a wekeend just out of the curiosity. I only log once I have a lower weight to record. My theory (rationalization?) is that since there is…

Yup, same thing. I'm currently on 88 mcg of Synthroid and am waiting for the results of most recent retest. I net 1200 calories/day, eat back most exercise calories, etc. etc., and should be losing at least a pound a week. I'm lucky if it's 1/4 pound and even then, it's not a certainty. I may have noticed a tad more energy…

I need to dress fairly professionally for work, although I can be somewhat "fashion forward" with accessories, etc. if I don't go crazy. To maximize my clothes budget and keep me feeling good about whatever success I am having, I make sure I have at least two pairs of pants and two skirts that fit decently since my weight…

I second (third?) what others have said about Cacique through Lane Bryant. I had a great sales clerk, buy one, get one 50% off and she plugged in a 30% off promo code. I measured a 36DDD, but ended up with 38DD fitting the best, and the back smoothers worked very nicely. Ended up paying something like $80 for 4 decent…

I appreciate the comments and suggestions. I wasn't aware of having any hypothyroidism symptoms when I was diagnosed, and I haven't noticed any meaningful changes in how I feel or physiologically, so I haven't really been able to gauge how I feel as an indicator of the "right" level for me. I know that t so I'm not looking…

My fix for sticking with the food choices I should be having (vs. those that are convenient) is to have the same thing, with some variation, each weekday for breakfast and for lunch. Weekends I mix it up a bit because I'm not at work and can do some more creative options, such as a larger brunch vs. breakfast and lunch.…

Others have mentioned many strategies, and the underlying theme is to start thinking about what and how much you are currently eating. For me, the act of putting every thing that enters my mouth into my log makes me think immediately about whether I want to eat/drink it, and if it's worth the draw on my daily total. I use…

Bought a large box at Costco quite a few weeks ago and they are slowy (very slowly) being consumed. I think calling them a "brownie" is a bit of a stretch. My 24 year old daughter tried one the other day, spit it out and proclaimed it tasted like cardboard. although once I thought about it, the texture is more like…

Before Nutella became as common as it is now, a favorite special gift for family members was a package of Walkers shortbread and a jar of Nutella. Yum! I think it's best in moderation, so here are my two favorite ways of incorporating it into my food options in a constructive way: *equal amount of Nutella and chunky peanut…

I have several strategies that I draw upon depending on what it is my head is telling me I need. If in a moment of weaknes, I begin to eat something--cookie, chips, etc.--and realize I shouldn't, I spit it out what's left and throw it away. I might do that after a couple of nibbles--just because I was weak for a moment…

I'm curious about this, since I've never seen/heard about using ice water to increase metabolism. And any idea what the theory is behind the gym 3 days and lower level exercise the others? I ask because I also have hypothyroidism and am taking 88 mcg of levothroid; 2 months ago was the first time since being diagnosed…

Welcome! I don't post much, but I do log every day using the Android app. It's really a great site/tool and I appreciate having the detailed food logs to use with my dietitian to help assess (with my physician) whether my thyroid meds still need adjusting. Even my dietitian says that for my calorie intake and activity…

That is so true! Whenever I feel discouraged by the amount I've lost, I envision the same amount of butter, shortening, etc. When you look at even 5 pounds of butter and thinking of losing that from one's body, the amount takes on a whole new significance!
