Any time you go to adjust your calorie goal or weight goal, it seems to mess with the start date, which is why your true start date may have been reset at some point.

I'm using the iOS Fitbit app, though not the latest update, and here is how to change your start date. Click on... Account > Nutrition & Body > Start Date > Select correct start date to reflect your true total loss There is also a Starting Weight option below the Start Date menu, so you can correct your starting weight…

Three years sounds like a good lifespan to me! I hope mine lasts three years. :) Lithium polymer batteries lose capacity over time, so I think you're correct to assume the battery is the culprit.
