I experienced a horrible loss of muscle while training for my last marathon on a vegan diet. Looking back at my food logs, I can see that I rarely ate enough protein even though my caloric intake was good. This time, I'm paying attention and making sure to eat enough protein and I haven't noticed any loss of muscle. (Not…

 Agreed, but not sure a punch could get rid of that smug look for good.

Yogurt and bananas. The smell of bananas makes me want to gag. This pretty much rules out most smoothies...so I guess we can add smoothies to the list, too. (even the name is kind of gross)

2 squares from a bar of dark chocolate = 100 calories and it kills my sweet tooth If I don't have calories left, I brush my teeth because I won't eat after that.

If you aren't ready to go for a coach yet, you could always consider joining a running club if there is one near you. I joined mine in the fall and have seen great improvement in my form and pace. We meet for long runs on Saturday mornings and track workouts on Wednesday evenings. I get a lot of great hands on advice from…

I also opted not to join HF because I didn't like the freaky guy on the shirt.

Based on my own personal experience, I think that's pretty ambitious. As a new runner, I went from my first half marathon to my first full marathon in 6 months (about one year from first 5K to full marathon) and it was a big miserable mistake. I had overuse issues and other problems that I didn't recognize because I was an…

"The New Rules of Marathon and Half-Marathon Nutrition" by Matt Fitzgerald has everything you are asking for. I can't say enough good things about it. edited to add - his book "Racing Weight" is good for helping with nutrition, too.

$75 per week for me and my two sons. This includes everything except school lunches which is another $20. We eat meat once per week and the rest of our meals are vegan or vegetarian.

I hose off my trail shoes after muddy runs and use a shoe dryer in them. My shoe dryer has two small heated "pods" that get warm but not hot. There are others that you can buy that blow warm air into them. I've tried air drying them, but it's so cool here that it usually takes days.

noms. I want to slap anyone that says it.

I'm reading Matt Fitzgerald's "The New Rules of Marathon and Half-Marathon Nutrition" now and there is a lot of information on caffeine. According to the book, one of the ways that caffeine aids performance is by enhancing carbohydrate uptake by the muscles when carbohydrate and caffeine are taken together. Caffeine also…

I also don't think it's a good idea. I did my first first marathon within a year of starting to run - big mistake. I ended up with overuse problems in my feet and finally an injury that took me off running for three months. It takes a long time to build up the muscles and endurance and train your body for the pounding it's…

I only use Clif gels - I like the double espresso one with caffeine. I tried the Clif shot blocks but they were too hard to chew.

I also recommend this one - not for weight loss - but for the nutrition tips. I used the plan for a half marathon trail run about a week and a half ago and it's the first time I'ever finished without feeling dead. I'm starting the level 2 marathon training program in the book today for Chicago in October.

For my half marathon and full marathon training to date, I've used Higdon's novice and intermediate 1 programs that just use foundation runs and long runs. I found that I got really bored with the lack of variation in the runs. For my second marathon, I am using Matt Fitzgerald's plan which includes the basic foundation…

I'd be happy if mine would just move the hard-sell membership/personal training vultures away from the reception area. I feel like they are waiting to pounce on me every time I walk in.

People who write "2" instead of "to" or "u" instead of "you". I will literally stop reading something if I see a "u".

Poptarts - more than 400 calories for one packet and they don't even fill me up.

I'm using this book too and I love it. It's showed me how to fuel before my runs to perform well and how to eat at a deficit for weight loss the rest of the time. I think that this program works great with the mileage involved in training for half marathon.

Yep. Nothing like finding a big orange skid on your work clothes half way through the day.

I use a bodymedia link armband. I've worn it for about two years now because I hate guessing at and logging exercise. It seems to be pretty accurate for me. Bodymedia works with MFP, too.

Armyworms? When I was a kid, they plagued our neighborhood. At night when the porch light was on they would crawl up and cover EVERYTHING - the floor, walls, ceiling. I still have nightmares!
