Welcome, Becky! Ellie - what did you injure? Just a thought: maybe you *need* to change something in your routine if you're suffering overuse injuries? I only mention it because I have some serious chronic issues with my rotator cuffs. I never suffered an "injury" per se (my issues came on gradually) but I get horrific…

There's at least one group on here for JMBR, so you should check them out in the groups section for support and other people on the program. I finished the program a while ago - it was pretty intense, but fun (if you enjoy telling Jillian to shove it every now and then  ) As far as the schedule, each phase has 4…

This. Check out the book New Rules of Lifting for Women by Lou Schuler, it runs about $15 on Amazon and outlines a good weighlifting program for women (you can also look on the groups - there is a New Rules/"NROL4W" support group). You probably *could* get to your goal weight by crash dieting, but you probably won't look…

For me, at least, it's precisely the opposite of the summer slow down over here. School starts in two weeks, which means I'm in crunch-time for prepping my fall classes (which, for this fall, involve preparing for the first biology lab course I've ever taught solo and *so much* beginning-of-school-year jitters...GAH!).…

Yeah, I think that, as long as you're using good form and challenging yourself, it's absolutely fine to use whatever variation/weight you're comfortable with. And I think that improvising based on the equipment you have available is also just fine, as long as you're doing *some* variation of the exercise you're supposed to…

I'm totally jealous. I've picked an insane number of tomatoes, one purple bell pepper, a bunch of herbs, and just harvested my first two (small) butternut squash...but not much else is growing as well as I'd like, despite the irrigation system I put in - it's just been too hot here I think for anything to grow terribly…

Tari_D: I think you're supposed to do the hardest variation that you can and still complete the reps. If bodyweight is all you can manage and still finish two sets of 15 reps (for the first run through workout A, for example), then start there. If you can do barbell squats (even if it's just with an empty bar), then you…

Workouts 1,2 means the first and second time you run through that lifting routine (3,4 are the third and fourth time, etc.; you'll do workout A and workout B a total of 8 times each) So, for your first and second time through workout A, you're going to do the following: A group: 15 squats (set 1) 15 squats (set 2) B group…

Oh, and I forgot to add: * Got asked when I'm due. Apparently I can be mistaken for a woman who is 6 months pregnant :embarassed: To be fair, one of the other wives IS pregnant, and this was asked by a girl who was meeting the group for the first time and probably got mixed up on the who's-who...but still, very uncool - I…

Well, I made it through the weekend with a house full of people. Some highlights: * Several new fist-sized holes in the drywall of my garage (some of the guys take this event WAY too seriously). * Not getting to sleep before 2am for 3 nights in a row, when I normally go to bed at 10:30-ish. OK, last night was my own fault…

For what it's worth, I totally agree with you - meat cooked in the microwave is gross, and only happens in my house if there is no other option (reheating leftovers is the only exception). I think the only thing we routinely cook in the microwave are those steamer packs of rice and/or vegetables, or reheating leftovers.…

OK. So, to try to do this in the nicest and least "bashing" way possible: 1. The OP *is* correct in saying that heat denatures proteins, and that denaturation changes the structure of proteins in a way that makes them nonfunctional. 2. This argument is not relevant when you get into the digestive system, because the major…

Agreed - both that this behavior is horrifying and that young people (women for the most part) don't seem to always have the resources and support they need to make healthy decisions. It certainly doesn't help that our society's standards for beauty are unrealistic and in a lot of cases extremely unhealthy. As a college…

That's great news, glad you're feeling better (and can eat your normal diet again)!

Wow, looks like it's been a quiet week! I've spent almost the entire week cleaning my house from top to bottom...even though I know I'll just have to do it again after this weekend.... So... my husband and friends have this yearly competition where they have a "decathlon" of "fake sports" (air hockey, ping pong, foosball,…

I've been making what I call "peach cobbler" - very simple and very delish. To standard oats recipe (oats, chia, milk, yogurt), add: 2 tsp stevia (or sugar) 1 tsp brown sugar 1/2 tsp cinnamon 6 almonds, chopped into small pieces fill with fresh chopped peach (1 whole peach is probably enough for about 3-4 jars) I imagine…

OMG I so agree! That movie gives me the jibblies.

For books, can I list the entire Dark Tower series? If I had to pick a single book, though, then I'd go with The Stand (the TV miniseries is also pretty good...but the book is stellar). I actually haven't seen many Stephen King movies, but of the ones I have seen I think I like Stand By Me the best.

Mercury in food is *most* harmful to developing brains, so *most* of the warnings are targeted at women who are pregnant or may become pregnant (due to the effects on the child, *not* the effects on the mom; mercury and other heavy metals interfere with the normal growth of brain cells, which causes much more serious…

I would buy this DVD :drinker: Seriously, though, yesterday I was way under on both calories and my carbs goal... so I had a can of coke zero and some Malibu Black after dinner. It was delicious. If it fits in your calories and macros, I don't see a problem (same goes for red wine and dark chocolate - two of my absolute…

So after all the talk about logging salad...we went to Sweet Tomatoes tonight and I ate a gigantic salad. And some other stuff (that's the killer there, really - the other stuff - but I did manage to just say "no" to the delicious mac & cheese). Blew my sodium goal, but I did drink a LOT of water, and, thanks to my Fitbit…

Also check out www.eatingwell.com - they list lots of healthy recipe makeovers!

Good morning all! It is a dark, kinda scary-looking morning in Chicago, with heavy winds and severe thunderstorms. I'll take it, though, since our grass is completely dead. Hopefully the rain actually lasts a while so it does some good (pity it had to come on recycling day, though...big boxes of paper + heavy rain = not a…

I'm a HUGE fan of Thai chili garlic sauce...but I try to use it in moderation because of the sodium. For a lower-salt spice fix, I head to our local European-style market (anywhere with a good produce section will do) and grab a handful of either the teeny tiny Thai chile peppers or larger cayennes. Both add a great kick…

I second the Clif Builders Bars - the chocolate tastes like a s'mores, and the chocolate mint? Soooo yummy!

First, gaining muscle and/or losing fat takes MUCH longer than 1 week to see any significant results - any changes you're seeing in the span of 1 week are just going to be changes in water weight. The above poster suggested cutting back on exercise because any new-to-you exercise will be taxing muscles that you're not used…

I have both a heart rate monitor (a Timex, though, not a Polar) and a Fitbit. The Fitbit is new, so I don't have *a lot* of experience with it. So far, it seems pretty good for non-exercise calorie burn estimates (walking, sitting, etc.), but it is NOT good for estimating calories during my weightlifting workouts,…

This. Don't put the pb in until the oatmeal is cooked and removed from the heat. I use steel cut oats and add 1tbsp Jif Natural creamy peanut butter + ~1tbsp stevia extract (it needs the extra sweetness, IMO). Also, either nutella (~1-2tsp) or ~1tbsp mini chocolate chips added in is pure heaven.

As others have said, the HRMs with chest straps are much more reliable than the watch-only types. I have a Timex T5H881 Zone Trainer that I got from Amazon.com for about $60, and shipping was free (it runs about $100 if you find it in a sporting goods shop). I honestly love this thing - does all the basics I need it to do,…

Reading these forums can get really confusing, can't it? You'll find a ton of different answers to your questions, but my best answer is what I put in the 2nd paragraph of my post above. Past that, it's all trial and error...that's the frustrating part.
