A good point. The supposed genetic predispositions toward being overweight, if they do exist, are mental and not physical conditions.

Did my first marathon just over a week ago now. Had heard a lot about the so called wall, but guessed that hitting it wasn't a total inevitability. Sure enough, i finished without hitting any such wall! My legs and joints were in A LOT of pain and were very fed up, but with regards energy i felt no noticeable drop…

you will still lose weight so long as you make sure your calories are still within the correct boundaries! Although remember many personal trainers don't really know what they are on about, so consider ignoring their advice and sticking to the cardio after all! far more effective for fat/ weight loss.
-
Lol @ the predictable responses in favour of the HRM! It too is just an estimate. And no more accurate an estimate than any website you come across!
-
So you're saying there's a choice between a calorie deficit, and a smaller calorie deficit!? Go for the large calorie deficit, just don't overdo it.
-
What "shape" you are in has nothing to do with calories burned during a given activity (cycling as a certain speed for a particular amount of time). Just because you find it physically easier to perform the same exercises, it does not mean you suddenly require less overall energy to perform them; that would be breaking the…

As long as you log whatever you drink, how could coffee possibly affect your weight loss?
-
Perhaps more training next time??
-
very good post.

I agree with the above comments. It really is pointless to carbo load for a mere 5k, but eating a meal with plenty of carbs the night before should give you a helping hand.
-
FYI everyone, the amount of "effort" you put into exercise has NOTHING to do with the amount of calories burned.
-
To be honest that number sounds like a huge overestimate. HRM's are not infallible, in fact they can be quite inaccurate, regardless of what American marketing might have you believe. 477 cals is A LOT of work to perform in just 20 minutes. I'm about to do a marathon, so am pretty fit at the moment, and yet would struggle…

Calories burned is nothing over and above the total kinetic energy cost of the activity performed, regardless of heart rate!
-
Azdak will have a field day if he reads this!
-
if your goal is general weight loss, then by all means forget the weights and replace them with cardio. FAR more calories burned per minute or hour doing that.
-
Don't worry too much about the training, they aren't that tough if all you want to do is complete it! 6 or 7 miles ran in training is all you need to get you accross the finish line in an acceptable shape!
-
erm, in this case the gym machine is low1
-
Jeeez, more body fat for long runs!? I realised some trainers are ignorant of any actual medical science but that comment beggers belief! I hope you laughed in his face at that advice lol.
-
To quote one poster on here, all you're doing wearing your HRM all day is wearing down the batteries. The figure you end up with will be completely meaningless; heart rate monitors have no accuracy at predicting daily calorie allowances and may only be used to produce an estimate of calorie burn during exercise. Not a…
-
Haha, yeah it won't be long until someone asks if they should log 8 hours of "sleeping" and how many calories that uses.
-
Any measurement of calorie burn taken outside of an oxygen controlled laboratory is only going to be a ballpark estimate, and that includes heart rate monitors. Which device is the most accurate depends on several variables, so the best you can do is get a few estimates and take an average. Ultimately the exact amount of…

Good stuff man. Plenty of people on here NEED to read this!
-
Lol I hate to be a buzzkiller but 350 cal is probably a massive overestimate for an hours cleaning!
-
Erm, no. It's cleaning. Not running. Even if you did want to log it, there would be no reliable way of measuring the calorie burn. And before various Americans cry USE A HEART RATE MONITOR, I should point out that not only are they flawed for measuring normal exercise, they are completely useless for measuring something…

yeah training for one at the start of october, so very near the end of my training now! Its good very well so far although i have neglected my long runs more than I should have, having not even done a 20 miler yet. but theres still time, and am confident I'll get a 20 miler in on saturday!
-
lol, owned

Regarding calories, you will use the same performing the same amount of work all at once or split into two, three, or even ten seperate sessions. Obviously doing it all at once is better for fitness though!
-
yep you will, always used to over on fat or carbs myself and had no problem losing. Going over on fat may have other health consequences but regarding weight loss you will be fine as long as you are still under on calories!
-
First one was just under half an hour, now down to just over 22 mins ish!
-
Don't worry about doing any specific exercises to make you a better/ less back pain prone runner. Ultimately running is a case of practice makes perfect; do more running and your body will gradually adapt to whatever it is that's causing pain at the moment.
