  • I run 3-4 miles about 3 times a week (about 360 cals per run). Takes between 35-45 mins depending on the distance. I bike around 12-15miles at the weekends (about 600 cals) - takes about 1-1.25 hours.
  • Well at least we don't have to pay for it.
  • I made this the other day; http://blog.myfitnesspal.com/2014/09/poached-egg-crispy-prosciutto-avocado-toast/ and it was great!!

  • Me, I like a structured routine so I started on a C25K plan in July and am now running 5K three times a week (with a time of around 37-39 mins). Bear in mind I've never run before & am 51 yrs old! I'm now wanting to increase my distance, so am using (again) a structured plan - the Bluefin Bridge to 10K program (designed…
  • It's fine. Although the program aims to get you to 5K (3.1 miles) it actually just gets you running for 30 mins (which may or may not be 5K - the best I can do 5K in at the moment is about 37 mins). Some people run it on roads, some on the beach & some indoors on a treadmill. As long as the sand is not too soft, it'll be…
  • Good luck & above all - have fun! I've been doing the C25K program & it's great if you do get the running 'bug' and want to continue. I've just finished it (never having run before since school & I'm 51) and now run 5K 3 times a week (best time is about 37mins). I'm just beginning a Bridge to 10K program and have my first…
  • Being in the UK I am a big tea drinker. Don't like coffee. Standard teabags, semi-skimmed milk (what I think you call 2% in the US?) no sugar. Usually drink about 5-6 mugs a day.
  • Dara O' Briain (Irish comedian) "Science knows it doesn't know everything; otherwise, it'd stop. But just because science doesn't know everything doesn't mean you can fill in the gaps with whatever fairy tale most appeals to you." and, not really a science quote, but another corker from him; "I'm sorry, 'herbal medicine',…
  • I know exactly what you mean about how you look. I was a bit self conscious too (partly cos of my age, lol). My running style seemd very gawky at first - I would watch 'real' runners & wonder how they moved so smoothly. My style now is slightly better but I still don't think I look like a 'proper' runner. I settle into a…
  • If I were you I'd download a C25K app or podcasts - these will give you a 'structure' to your walk/jog routine and gradually build you up from a non-runner to running 5K. I've just completed the course (over 9 weeks) having never run before and have loved every minute of it. I now run 5K 3 times a week. Don't worry about…
  • Nope/ It's only too late when you're 6ft underground. I'm 51 & just started my journey. Lost 16lb so far (about halfway thru my goal). Have started running for the first time in my life (started slow with a C25K program and now doing 5K 3 times a week) and loving it! Feel better & more energy than I have in years.
  • Yes. Can't beat roast potatoes cooked in lard (or goose fat).
  • As you are in the UK try the NHS Choices 'Couch to 5K' program. It's a great way to get running - you start off with jogging/walking & gradually build up over 9 weeks. I've just completed it and from someone who had never run before (& hated it in school!) I am now running 5K 3x a week. Can't recommend it highly enough!!…
  • I struggled with some of the weeks. But if you are managing it, you are doing ok!! Don't worry about speed at the moment. Slow down your pace if necessary and concentrate on completing the run. Have now (just) finished the final week and am managing 30+ minute runs 3 times a week.
  • I'd say around 300 cals.
  • Well done you!! The 'new you' looks fab!! More importantly, I bet you feel better too.
  • Similar! I get cravings for carbs just before, but I'm trying to minimise my carb intake. So, if I have a little more, I make sure I run/bike/walk it off again and as a bonus, the active sports help with any cramps!
  • Another vote for C25K program. I'm 51, never run before (well, not since school, when I hated it) and now running for 30mins (non-stop) 3-4 times a week. Covering 5k in about 40 mins. Am going to continue on with a 'Bridge to 10K' program in the near future as I am enjoying it so much!
  • Thanks for posting this - I too was wondering how to define a 'serving' as I'm often not sure how things are going to be portioned up. Weighing the whole thing & then weighing your portion makes a lot of sense!
  • I'm on Week 7 Run 2 today. Interestingly, I did a 1 mile 'fitness test' run (via Endomondo app) before I started C25K and my time for 1 mile was 14m58s. I repeated the test yesterday and this time my mile time was 11m 59s. Never thought I'd ever see myself running at this stage in my life (I'm 51)!
  • Week 7 Run1 tomorrow. Managed the 25 min run at end of Week 6 yesterday. No runs/walks now - it's all continuous!
  • Well done!! Well done!! Keep going. I HATED running at school - avoided it wherever possible. I started a C25K (couch to 5K) program about 6 weeks ago (it's a 9 week program) and I'm loving it! Really into my runs now & they start you off very gradually with walking -->jogging --> walking. If you want a more 'structured'…
  • Did W6 Run1 today, after successfully doing the 20min run of W5 Run 3 on Monday. Strangely, I found today's run more of a stuggle but did manage it! I was nervous about running the 20 mins non-stop but I did slow my pace down & when I stopped I felt I could've gone on a little further. Not feeling so daunted by the longer…
  • Nope. Another misguided person. I AM fine on 1200 calories. Losing 1-1.5 lbs a week, with exercising. Feeling great. Oh and if you want to swap qualifiations, I have an Honours degree in Biochemistry & Physiology, plus a Masters.
  • Well done!! Like you I HATED running at school and haven't done any since I left. Never saw myself as a runner. Started C25K, 51 yrs of age & I am really enjoying it. I'm going to enter a 5K in Autumn and am hoping to train on up to 10K.
