  • Terri I am three years post menopause but lots of my friends also experience the night sweats and hot flashes after the cessation of periods. I think our hormone levels still shift. I opted not to take anything ~going au natural ;)
  • Gee, I am just the opposite - however I don't think thyroid is to blame. I just get an eye roll is I ask my husband is it hot in here or is it just me? It's worse at night I call it *night embers* and it interrupts my sleep. It is probably hormonal, I just wish there was a natural way to balance us all out!
  • Hi and welcome! I joined the group in January - it's a nice place to exchange idea's and to give/get support! I think it's all trial and error. What works for me might not work for you but anything is worth a try when what you are doing isn't working. I am also taking armour and it has worked out great for me. Give it some…
  • It is a myth that muscle weighs more that fat. A pound is a pound. Muscle takes up less space than fat - that is why when you build muscle and lose fat the scale won't move but your clothes fit better. I have not been exercising at a level of fitness where I am building muscle. For now it's cardio and I am building up to a…

  • Sorry to hear this. I know you were so hoping armour would be an answer for you. Were you taking any other med's while you were sick that could have elevated your BP?

  • Wow, home made pizza - I'm impressed *lol*! It's great that you are eating healthy and trying to figure it all out with the hashi's now. Please, everyone keep updating. It's interesting to see what everyone is trying and give us all idea's & inspiration. I am much older, in my mid 50's and as we age this just gets so much…
  • I think it's all trial and error. Doctors will give you about 15 minutes of their time, bill it to your insurance company and then see the next patient - at least that has been my experience. It's nice to have this forum to bounce idea's off one another! Donna

  • It seems like the harder I work at it - the harder my body fights to hold onto every ounce it can! This week I am going to actually increase my calories to that needed for basal metabolism (1500 calories) and exercise to burn 500 calories/day and see what that tweek will do. Also, eliminating kashi go lean (and other…
  • Talk to your pediatrician! DS started to gain weight just before the onset of puberty this is *normal*. From a nutrition standpoint he was eating healthy - just hungry all the time. One tweek I made was to cut out gatorade when he went to camp in the summer and gave him water instead. He was given a sports drink when. he…
  • I guess it is food for thought. I would read the book and see if it relates to your life/situation - couldn't hurt. I am also a type "a" it's just the way I am wired and it has good and bad points. For myself, this is the first time in my life where I have less stress rather than more. My son is a young man away at…
  • Terry interesting about the dairy. I was eating the kashi with milk which until then I wasn't using on a daily basis. The week I switched to almond milk. I am going to reduce/eliminate gluten and dairy and see if that helps - thanks! Also, a pound is a pound. Muscle weighs the same as fat but it takes up less space in your…
  • While I understand everyone's body is different this would not work for me. I did the calculation and I wasn't consuming as many calories suggested (even with the 200 deduction for thyroid condition - which I found interesting), 1925, I was at about 1800 as I kept a food diary for a week to see where I was to gauge where I…
  • I don't know if this applies to you Terri but I thought my hair loss was solely due to the hashi's but I think it was just as likely hormonal because I was in peri-menopause at the time I got my hash's diagnosis. Once I started the armour, I noticed that my hair loss was much, much less. Now that I am post-menopause, I…
  • I love Lady Gaga too! My son bought me her Born this way cd. He and his girlfriend saw her in Atlantic City last year said she put on a fantastic show :)
  • Terri I applaud you for not giving up and trying to figure it all out. I can so relate! I would keep handwritten diaries of food/water/exercise and go to the doctor complaining that no matter how hard I tried that the weight was not coming off. Wouldn't even look at the diary! I had to ask the endocrinlogist to do the…
  • Just got an e-mail from the library that they have a copy of the 30 day shred available for me to borrow - will pick it up today and check it out!
  • I am actually looking to lower (not eliminate) my consumption of animal protein and increase plant based foods in my diet. I like the idea of a veggie wrap maybe with some hummus for protein instead of an egg- thanks for the idea!
  • Just did some on-line reasearch. Maca contains glucosinolates which can cause goiter especially if you are iodine deficient. It is *not* recommended as a supplement if you have thyroid diesease. One of the side effects is insomnia.
  • I was talking with a friend the other day who also has thyroid issues about chia seeds and she metioned maca to me. It was the first time I had heard of it. She told me to google Rich Roll and to look at his website. She is using it in shakes but not long enough to say if it is making a difference.
  • Hi Tracey - welcome! I am new to the group as well. I think the more you talk to people you find that it's all a matter of trial and error to figure all of this out and it can be very frustrating. It's nice to have this group to know you are not alone! Sharing stories and ideas is helpful because there is always something…
  • I've heard a lot of buzz about the 30 day shred and would like to give it a try. Need to work up to a better level of fitness first, maybe in a few weeks. I am going to check our library and see if they have a copy to borrow to try it first :) Don't have a Wii but my son who is away at college has a PS3, but I don't know…
  • That is awesome! Keep up the good work!!
  • After seeing LHughe11's post about Forks Over Knives, my husband and I watched it on Netflix last night. It was so interesting and full of information, I want to watch it again. While I don't think I can embrace a totally vegan lifestyle, I agree that we ingest too much animal protein in the United States and it's making…
  • Read your post and I don't have similar experience with regard to thyroid treatment - radiation. But I am really confused by your post. If I am reading it correctly your thyroid no longer functions and so now your thyroid hormones must be replaced some other way, specifically medication. You may want to speak with your…
  • Yesterday, I attended a talk given by Christina Pirello who hosts a PBS cooking show "Christina Cooks". She is vegan and has a very inspiring story. Although I don't think I want to embrace a totally vegan lifestyle, I would agree that we include in our diet too much animal based protein in our diet and need to be more…
