I like to put a few savory bits in the crockpot with the protein. Typically rough chopped onions and carrots, a couple garlic cloves, and a dried chili pepper if i want heat. They'll all but dissolve, but will flavor the protein. I then put a couple pounds of chicken thigh, pork loin, or beef shoulder in there, sprinkle…

45 minutes to cook brown rice. It isn't boiling most of that time, simply simmering or steaming. All rices are not the same: http://dish.allrecipes.com/how-to-cook-rice/

Congratulations and thanks to all the nurses here! My mom, aunt, and sister are all RNs, and i have a true appreciation for the working nurses! Might be worth clarifying that weight loss doesn't require time. You just need to manage caloric intake, and keep it at a deficit. If you choose to exercise, you will likely feel…

You and i do our jumping jacks differently.... But yeah, just get your blood flowing to muscles a bit prior to any strenuous exertion. A good fast walk, some light jumping jacks. Give your body five minutes or so to warm up, and then hit the road. Afterward, stretch and cool down and, if you pushed yourself, give your body…

save the money on multivitamins, and add some fresh produce to your diet. As long as you get a little variety of in your diet, and do some cooking with fresh ingredients, you're likely going to cover all your nutrient needs. You end up pissing away the multivitamins, and that money could instead be improving your eating…

Train yourself to flip the lights on immediately, on your way to the alarm. Once i get hit by the bright lights, sleeping in goes out the window. I haven't invested in one yet, but i'm intrigued by the LED light alarm clocks that will slowly start to brighten a few minutes before you wake up, and be fully bright as your…

I also use the earbuds that have a molded rubber loop over each ear. They stay firmly in place regardless of how vigorous i'm going or how sweaty i get. i got mine for about $20 at the nearby drugstore.

I find that if i get up in the morning and go for a run, my whole day at work goes better. I feel better. I've got a sense of accomplishment early on. My thoughts are more orderly. I feel more prepared for whatever the day will bring. That alone has been enough to drag me out of bed before the sun comes up.

Set the treadmill to 4.6 mph, and see whether you can walk it comfortably, or have to run to keep up. Be sure to try it on a few different treadmills, if possible, to make sure it's not a calibration issue on one machine. In doing my c25k this morning, i was expected to run 1 mile in 10 minutes, then walk 1/4 mile in 3…

i'm in Week 6 of c25k, and thinking the same way! I'm finding such great success with c25k that i've looked at a couple of progressive push-ups and sit-ups programs, available online for free. The first time, you do as many push-ups as you can until you're exhausted, even if it's as low as one. You then find the program…

Give yourself some arbitrary rules. See how it goes, and refine for the next event. For instance:* I will start the race running. * I will run at a comfortable pace. * I will finish the race running. * I will encourage at least ten fellow runners as i pass them. * If i need to walk, i will walk no more than 60 seconds.

I'm on week 6, not 3. But that's no reason we can't motivate eachother! I struggled at the end of Week 1 Day 1. I've never been a runner. But i took each day as a challenge, and i have made it through. When i first downloaded the app, my entire concern was not embarrassing myself too bad at a charity 5k i agreed to…

First, congratulations on starting to take control of your weight and, ultimately, health! I waited until i was approaching my forties.... you will have good years ahead of you, starting at 19! You should use the MFP calculator to figure out how many calories you should eat in a day. It will use your height, weight,…

I was a little anxious going into Week 5 Day 3. I struggled on Week 1 Day 1; had trouble believing i'd be able to make it 20 minutes straight. But once i got on the path and put my mind on my breathing, the ground passed along beneath me. Made it through 20 minutes, and looking forward to the next challenge. You've got it…

I just finished Week 6 Day 1 this morning. Each step of the way has been challenging, but surmountable. The program is structured well, such that while i was barely able to complete the 60-second runs a month and a half ago, last Friday i completed the 20 minute run. It wasn't easy; but i did it! My biggest learning…

Are you trying to make weight? If not, cutting in the weeks leading up to a fight will not be to your advantage. If it's purely cosmetic, be the porky fighter with stamina and power. If you're trying to make weight, turn to your coach, not a bunch of internet strangers.

each the time the program has upped its expectations of me, i've felt that bit of anxiousness. but i've also found it achievable! Congratulations on starting the program, and sticking through it to the fourth week. Look at how far you've come. I'll see you at the finish line!

Congratulations! I look forward to reading your updates, and am super proud of your progress. It's nice to find someone right around the same day as me, and working hard at it. I know what you mean about losing control of the breathing. I"ll be super focused on it, and keeping my pace relaxed. Then i'll notice my arms…

I'm a little bit below 18 stone (~245), and this morning i completed Week 5 Day 3 of my c25k program. This included a 20 minute jog with no rest. when i started the program, week 1 day 1 required me to jog for 60 seconds at a time, and by the end of the first day (8 reps @ 60 seconds with 90 second recovery walking…

i tried walking with jogging intervals, and used terrain to guess at the intervals, with some success. Then i got a c25k app, and started relying on it to guide me. I am looking forward to Week 5 Day 3 tomorrow. From barely running 100 feet without wanting to throw up, tomorrow i'm pushing myself to meet the program's…

On the down side, you get scammed. On the up side, you get to poop a lot! :/

Good job! Starting the program is a big step, and will get you so far, so quickly! The advice i read a lot when i was starting, and which clicked for me around week 2 or 3, was to jog slowly! You don't want to run out of breath; you want to jog slowly enough that you could carry on a short conversation. My first few runs,…

There's no shame in restarting weeks as needed. BUT - I think we've got this!

Excellent! I've recently been training myself on controlled "belly breathing" while jogging. Initially i would inhale for four steps, and exhale for four. The past couple sessions, i've worked on inhaling for three steps, and forcibly exhaling for two steps. This has seemed to improve my endurance dramatically. It's wild…

How do we evaluate the "right evidence" that might change your mind? My criteria is that it needs to be peer-reviewed by experts within the field. I have not seen any credible evidence that drinking diet sodas tricks the body into storing fat. Furthermore, this claim flies in the face of physics: energy doesn't come from…

Good going, Firef1y72! Week 5 Day 2 for me, this morning. Monday, when i completed Day 1, was like you said: a little harder, but not as tough as i imagined. I expected the two 8-minute segments this morning would be grueling. It actually went by quite nicely! I kept my pace relaxed, and kept the phone screen blank so i…

Do it so you'll have more wonderful years with your family. Internalize THAT motivation. Don't go through this to simply look better. Not simply to feel better. Train yourself to live better. To be mindful. To raise kids with healthy outlooks on life, and healthy habits on keeping their bodies and minds fit. Live a good…

And if you're wearing sunglasses, they can't determine where you're looking. Which makes them nervous.

Fantastic! Congratulations on this major turn-around. That cloud of huffing-puffing dust on the horizon behind you.. that's me.

I'm also on week 5 in c25k. This morning was day 1 for me. I'm proud and surprised to find myself not only running, but looking forward to running. And how i enjoy the bit of fatigue at the end. I've also had to learn to slow my jogging down considerably, and now that i've come to terms with it, i find it quite calming to…
