To use MFP, you figured out your estimated maintenance goal, and set a deficit below that. Your maintenance goal represents what you would consume daily to maintain your weight. Logically, that means that your maintenance goal is an accurate depiction of your regular daily habits before you started thinking about making…

My guess - your issues go deeper than simply food "sabotage" and you're misdirecting it here. Take responsibility for your own diet and wellness, and don't get distracted in blaming others. If your MIL is doing things that bug you, be honest (at least with yourself) about it, and don't deflect your frustration into…

Bronan, either you're funny, or you have a bad attitude. Hell, maybe both. Either way, misrepresenting information on forums frequented by people trying to sort through the confusion ain't good. Simply throwing this misleading title in the forum might run a few folks around in mental circles. You should feel bad.

I'm against cheat days for a purely emotional/psychological reason: if you feel the need to "cheat" then you don't really buy into what you're doing the other days. I think it's better to come to terms with the need to eat well and live a healthy lifestyle, and shape your eating and other habits around that. Once you're…

As i understand it you'll burn about the same number of calories when walking briskly or running the same distance. The advantage to running could be that you burn the calories (cover that distance) more quickly. If the baby likes walking but not running, the time advantage is a moot point. The bugbear is that you don't…

i have taken to cooking almost exclusively with bacon fat, which i save when i cook up chopped bacon, which i sprinkle liberally through my life. I use bacon fat as a butter replacement while baking.... i didn't believe it would work.. but damned if i ain't a happy camper!

I struggled with quitting smoking for much of my 18 years as a smoker. In March 2014 i read "The Easy Way to Quit Smoking" by Allen Carr (i know, the title is silly), and quit smoking on March 8, 2014. Not only have i been entirely nicotine free since then, with no real frustration or other problems, but the perspective he…

I solved this problem by budgeting for an evening snacks. I make my own snack mix in a big container and store it with a measured scoop. If i were to take that tub to my reading chair or simply pour some unmeasured into a bowl, i could mindlessly munch on the whole damn thing. but when i put a single scoop into a bowl and…

Have a good weekend. Celebrate with your friends. Monday, when you get back "on the wagon" - do NOT do anything drastic to make up for any calorie overages this weekend. Just start moving forward. We didn't get unhealthy in one weekend. One weekend will not set us back. A series of "just this one weekend" excuses, however,…

I had that at Katz Deli in Austin, TX once. I split it with a friend, and even then i was afraid my body was going to shut down. I quit smoke a bit over a year ago, after 18 years stuck on cigarettes. If i went into the doctor tomorrow and learned i was dying in six weeks, i wouldn't start smoking again, but i would go…

Bsmerlie - that is a great idea about drinking a bottle of water on the way. I often find my stomach growling as i'm at the table. Taking the edge off would really help contribute to sensible decisions! Thank you.

You know it's not the best idea, and want people to rationalize it for you. You're playing games, instead of owning your health. Take responsibility for your behaviors. Give yourself the respect and power. You can be healthy. Just start eating at the appropriate calorie count today. No need to try tricks and gimmicks. no…

for me, higher protein and fat seem to satisfy hunger cravings more quickly. My previous eating habits were to eat a lot of carbs with each meal, mainly starches. I would fill up on way too many calories, eating more than a reasonable serving, and would find myself hungry again fairly soon. I have not gone "low carb", but…

She may be new to the program, and new to the idea of counting calories, and frustrated or confused by a new undertaking. Have some compassion. Tanisha719 - When you put your information into MFP, it asks about your current weight and activity level. It uses this to estimate the amount of calories you burn every day…

that's a great idea, strong_curves. Haven't done any measurements besides body weight since i started, although i know i've lost inches based on wardrobe. I'm sure those numbers would help give me the reinforcement that my EVIL, EVIL scale occasionally refuses to provide! thanks!

Crockpot: 1. when you cook meats for longer times at lower temperatures, they tend to come out more tender and flavorful. 2. you can easily leave a crockpot unattended for long periods of time. That doesn't mean i would only or always use my crockpot to roast beef. if i've got a really, really good cut like a prime rib,…

so wait... i should quit eating these double-a batteries?

First - congratulations, Grad! Second - you can have more than support - you can start getting healthy. You may not get to the end point in fifty days, but you can see progress and feel good about what you're doing! Start logging what you eat, today. Start reading up on how to make your logging more accurate, and how to…

I was discouraged at first by the prospect of logging everything i eat forever and ever. But it occurred to me that lots of healthy folks don't do that. It's not necessary[ for wellness. What they do, and i didn't, is generally eat healthy. I had too much fast food, particularly. And when i snacked, it was never with any…

One way your body shores itself up against unhealthy eating habits that lead to weight gain is by retaining water. A bunch of water. A lot of people loose weight rapidly once they start eating healthy. I lost about 15 pounds in a couple weeks, with significant changes to my body shape. This was primarily just from my body…

Good news! "90% of weight loss is in the kitchen." * Look at the number of calories you are estimated (at whatever your current body weight) to run for one mile. It will be distressingly small. * * Look at how many calories there are in a fast food hamburger - it will equal running a couple miles or more, most likely. If…

I'm thinking about picking up a guitar and learning to play, but i'm worried about whether i'll be able to quit my job when my favorite band recruits me.... Don't put off getting healthy because of what might happen, eventually. You didn't get to a point where you were dissatisfied with belly fat in a meal, or a day, or a…

i have a big pot of pinto beans soaking in time to be done when i get home from work. When i get home, i'm going to throw some cumin in my soup pot. Once i can smell it, i'm adding 1/4 cup of bacon grease, a couple medium yellow onions, diced, a couple chopped serrano peppers, and a couple minced garlic cloves, along with…

Your screw up was accepting "i couldn't stop myself." as an excuse. You could have stopped yourself, but you wanted the cookie more than you wanted not to have the cookie. That's alright. The reason you're trying to lose weight is that you have some bad habits. Correcting those habits takes time and patience with yourself.…

Those are delicious! I've also added cottage cheese, as mistikal13 suggested, to up the protein. I also added a sprinkle of pumpkin pie spice after cooking, and that brought em up another notch.

how far below maintenance is your goal? It would be better to have a healthy dinner tonight, contributing to the development of healthy habits in the long run, and go over your set goal. Just be mindful and serious; next time you're tempted to "be a piggie" correct THAT behavior, to set those healthy habits. None of us…

I have actually been subbing butter lately with something that makes me quite happy. About once a week, i chop up a pound of bacon and cook it. When it's done, i separate the meat and freeze it. The bacon grease goes into a covered glass bowl i keep in the fridge. Bacon grease is a good sub for butter in many recipes.

Nonsense! The secret to loosing weight quickly, safely, and naturally is: * Take your first bite facing east. As you chew, line your chakras up with the path of the rising sun. * As you swallow, slowly bring your hands above your head. Once there, and with the food swallowed, inhale gently and deeply. * Bend at the hips,…

You can stay away from junk foods. You need to choose to. That means it needs to be more important to you to eat healthy than to eat junk. For me, it finally clicked at 36 years old. When i picked up fast food or grabbed a salty/sweet snack at the corner store i thought that the junk made me happy. But as soon as i was…

Situation still unclear - should i eat back the calories i burn while vomiting or not?
