I run in both Merrells and VFFs and love them both. Been wearing the Merrells more lately because I don't have to search for my FF socks in the dark at 4:30am. Would caution to read up on how to cut milage when starting in them. This is crucial to avoid injury.

Would agree with most of what's above and would add that my trick is sleeping with a nightlihgt. I takes a little getting used to but I find it makes it much easier to get up if the room is not completely dark when the alarm goes off.
