This was just really interesting to me because I'm in a neutral shoe and am pretty comfortable with forefoot landing, but my IT band issues have really dampened my ability to run more than 4 - 5 miles at a pop. At the same time, the passion for barefoot running is mostly just that; to see some real data was a breath of…

I can't give a specific number in good conscience since I have no specific data to work from. However, my gut response is this. As most of the mechanisms for uptake involve active transport and as the enzymes -- under typical conditions -- act in a highly effective fashion, I would expect the value to be much closer to…

(1) As Jimmy Buffet said, "There's no dumb *kitten* vaccine." (2) Had a similar episode last summer...I think mine involved a red jeep, too, ironically...in which the cacklers honked their horn to try to freak out the fat guy on his bike. Thing is, like the above posters said, you're doing something that they can't, and…

Not sure how many responders took the time to look at the link provided by the OP. Sounds like juice was being made. If an extractor was being used (as described in the link provided) then the fiber component of the produce (specifically the insoluble fiber) would NOT be in the juice consumed and would NOT contribute to…

Okay, let's talk digestive efficiency. First of all, there are two separate issues in play. (1) How efficiently are macronutrients broken into their subunits for absorption into the body? (2) How efficiently are macronutrient subunits absorbed into the body? Up-front facts: All digestible carbohydrates are chains of…

I'm also in Reno; have found very few shows that come through here with cheaper tickets than that (the Nugget is one of the few that does go lower, and not much). That said, I caught him last time he came through town (pre-viewing his Xmas material before the holidays) and it was money well spent. If you can afford it, I…

Am swamped til this afternoon, but am giving a lab exam. Let me read through the comments, check my own references and I'll weigh-in...I know the issue of digestive efficiency/calories burned/etc. is a hot topic for a lot of people. If you're watching this, check back for my formal response in about four hours or so.

I second all of this! From the evolutionary perspective, figure it this way. What did early humans have easy access to? Leafy green stuff, meat, nuts, berries, etc. What did we have the least easy access to? Sweet, carb-rich foods...which we need as an energy source. So what would we rationally expect to develop a craving…

Last I checked (and I teach this) insulin is NOT a fat storage hormone. Yes, it targets adipose tissue and can lead to fat storage...but it also targets skeletal muscle. Whether or not insulin leads to fat storage depends heavily on physical activity level, body fat percentage and a host of other factors. Seriously...if…

You just have to dive in...I understand the social messages that get us to think less is more in weight loss. Look at it with this simple analogy. Metabolism is like a fire that has to be fueled to burn at a high level. How can it burn if you don't stoke it adequately? The other thing is to look at folks who've done it. In…

I've found that planning is the key. (I'm down nearly 60 lbs. from last April.) When I plan I do it in detail. Every day is in the books at least one day in advance so I can make necessary adjustments as I go. For me it has gotten easier with time, but I've also focused on staying on as much as possible. I don't have…

Sodium can definitely be a big deal. I'm trying hard to get of BP meds myself so I watch sodium like a hawk. While I drink a lot of water (1 gallon-ish per day), I also keep my sodium down, and while it's a hard adjustment, it's very doable. I average well under 1800 mg sodium per day while averaging 2200 calories per day.…

Scorpion. It was delicious!

I agree! I will say that some of the premises of so-called paleo eating are healthy...but as you point out, the justifications are about as accurate as scientific claims that humans are natural vegetarians. Cheers!

I'm not at goal but I'm so much thinner I'm feeling it badly this year (and I used to be a human heat pump!). I expect this will just be my lot in life now and that means on occasion wearing sweatshirts to be and tucking my pajamas into socks.

^^^I agree with this. However, I'll add a couple of extra things. Sodium is used by the kidney to retain water. Thus, when you sodium intake is high you hold onto more sodium and therefore more water (hence the water retention linked to sodium intake). As this is specifically pulling water into the blood it can lead to…

That's my blog. I'm not a physician but I am a prof who teaches A&P for a living.

Even if the benefit of the doubt is given, this is one unreplicated study telling people what they want to hear (that you don't have to work at good health). Until there are two independent replications of this result I would totally ignore it...and I'd probably check the primary source literature to see if it's actually…

I believe that's the final sign of the Apocalypse, right? Or does it mark the end of the next Mayan calendar? No, wait, zombie infestation? I can't keep my doomsday scenarios straight...

Skeletal tissues (bone, cartilage, ligaments, tendons) strengthen internally in proportion to the strain placed on them. I think the point of the < 35 recommendation is that after 35 there is marked deterioration in such things as bone density due to wear and tear. By improving joint stability and skeletal strength before…

I agree with the above answer with one caveat: calories are still calories. In other words, if you are in caloric deficit, alcohol consumption can side-track metabolism...but only to the degree that the alcohol is present. If your metabolism is high enough relative to the amount of calories consumed then eventually you…

I know I've been AWOL due to family and end of term issues, but I'll take this on here. First, consider skeletal muscle as a tissue. Muscle cells are essentially tubes (they are called muscle fibers for a reason) filled with lots of protein threads (properly called myofilaments). It is these protein fibers that make the…

My 5yo: "Daddy, you mustache came back!" Me (who just shaved an hour before, smiling): "What do you mean?" My 5yo: "Right there...in your nose." Time to get the nose-hair trimmer out...

Our lettuce was bad today and I was counting on a lunch salad. Mixed 4.75 oz. diced chicken, 1 oz. shredded Swiss cheese, with diced veggies (half a tomato, half a cucumber, and half a red pepper). A very filling "vegetable salad" as my son called it. Who says you have to eat leafy greens in a salad? At the same time (and…

Not just a gal problem! I've not been able to wear my wedding band in months and have dropped another four inches in the waist since August, so I'm in dire need as well. Besides the already good suggestions, keep an eye out for big sales at stores that are generally more affordable to start with. I recently picked up 2…

Of course, this is not new information. All the numbers sounded very familiar to me. The original article is more than two years old. Useful for people to know, yes. But not new.

I find I'm most at risk on weekends when I have more time on my hands and am less distracted by work. I've found the things that help me most are to increase water consumption, to occupy myself better (I'm not really bored but not having focused activities hurts me), and upping protein during the day really helps.…
