  • I really like my Polar FT7. Not super pricy (I paid $104) but not cheap either. I'll probably upgrade to a Garmin down the line (for running and cycling purposes, I will eventually want the GPS) but I found these too pricey for my first HRM.
  • This sounds yummy (I have a serious cheesecake attachment myself) AND the sodium is not outrageous...I'll have to give this a try. Thanks for sharing! And thanks to your bf for the idea!
  • I've been running since mid-June and am scheduled for my first 5K in 3 weeks. I'll send you a friend request.
  • We have various types of summer squash weekly during the summer. Love to steam it and once the water is boiling it only takes about 5-7 min. depending on how thin it is sliced.
  • Sounds really good...maybe I'll try it with catfish...
  • Welcome! I'm not in Ohio now but I grew up in the Toledo/Bowling Green area and my folks are still there. Swimming...even in circles :)...is one of the best forms of exercise you can do because it combines cardio with strength in a single activity. If you combine that with walking you will be off to a great start at…
  • Kate Moss is primarily a clothing/runway model...her career has been about clothing DESIGNERS and the WOMEN who wear (or aspire to wear those clothes. Beckham got her start in a group targeting young GIRLS as a fan base. Advertising that utilizes these women is targeting other WOMEN. This whole super skinny waif thing has…
  • Start slow and build up to greater intensity exercise. Walking as much as you can is a good start, but look for other opportunities, the more fun the better. Let me use myself as an example. I started this back in April. For the first month, my main form of exercise was playing tennis on the Wii. I began to incorporate…
  • Best of luck to you! Feel free to send me a friend request if you like!
  • Some friendly advice: I do 15-20 mile bike rides 2 - 3 times a week...I'd eat an apple or something before I go...you need some carbs to start fat burning at the cellular level and endurance cardio like cycling demands this...I smell ammonia after intense rides (a sign of burning protein as an energy source) if I don't…
  • I think this is a fairly common problem, especially with partners who are themselves overweight and out of shape. Before I got on board with my wife I really just stayed out of her way with reference to diet/exercise because (1) I knew how important it was to her and (2) I knew how easily I could sabotage her if I wasn't…
  • This is the best approach for a lot of people. I have no intention of giving up anything I love forever, but I don't have equal control for all things. I'm good with most sweet, so cookies and candy can be in the house because I will rarely eat them and only in small amounts; if I'm serving myself ice cream or eating pizza…
  • And well you should be! Vacations are one of the toughest nutrition/exercise challenges we can face and you were clearly the big winner. Great job!
  • You're doing a great job so far! I think I know how you feel about the timing of adding friends...I had to lose a little on my own before I really wanted a support group (and I have a GREAT one now!). Feel free to send me a friend request!
  • I do all my biking on the road so I just drive my route to determine distance off the odometer; I use this to determine distance and calculate average speed. You can buy cycling HRMs that calculate speed, distance, etc. but they are not cheap. I've seen very cheap devices (< $15) at WalMart that supposedly calculate…
  • I'll take the protein question for you. Protein is composed of subunits called amino acids. If you've heard of enzymes -- which our cells use to survive -- these are a type of protein that our cells make. These and other proteins made and used by our cells are built from amino acids in the proteins we eat. Muscle tissue,…
  • I think it's fall out from the culture of instant gratification in which we live. How many times have we all heard "don't eat this" or "eat that" as guarantees to fast weight loss without real effort? In fact, that stupid "5 foods to never eat" ad is running above as I type this! Moderation in eating and increased physical…
  • I have found my Polar FT7 to be pretty reliable...so long as you update your information regularly and take care of it appropriately. (i.e. if you get one with a chest band monitor, wash it as directed!). My physical activity has greatly increased since I started using it last month. Since I started running, it is really…
  • I teach my anatomy & physiology students that water balance (osmotic balance) in the body comes down to a simple equation: water in = water out. The body's two best ways to regulate water and ion concentration are through the thirst reflex (water in) and water loss in urine (water out). Basically the more you take in the…
  • Totally agree...though I'd look into your fiber as several others have noted!
  • Born and raised for 18 years in NW Ohio (Toledo/Bowling Green) before splitting time in Durham and Beaufort, NC for 4 years before spending 10 wonderful years in Tallahassee, FL...now six horrific years in Reno, NV. (Nevada is...unpleasant.) Desperately trying to hatch an escape plan back to the SE US...preferably FL or NC!
  • I generally agree with this perspective (with the exceptions of milk and yogurt...especially Greek yogurt). In our house we use reduced fat versions of some foods (e.g. sour cream) and healthier versions of others (e.g. mayo made from olive oil), but typically avoid fat free. We shop more for reduced sugar and reduced…
  • I can't think of a valid reason for a man (or woman) to take issue with their significant other improving their health. My wife was on here a couple months before I joined, and I never complained or questioned her time logging food or exercising because I knew #1 how important it was to her and #2 because I knew how much…
  • Don't push too hard. Muscles respond badly if you push too hard too fast after years of disuse. I've been doing serious cardio since May but delved back into upper body strength training two weeks ago. It took me over a week to be sufficiently pain-free to work my triceps again because I overdid it on the first day.
  • I know you were looking for mom's but if you'd like some support from an older dad (I'm 37 with a 4 yo and 2 yo...my wife responded above!), you're welcome to add me as a friend. I'm actually the primary cook in our house and I'm happy to share healthy eating techniques, including how I got my 4 yo to freak out an older…
  • I agree...and unfortunately that sabotages a lot of people where weight management is concerned. They expect fast results from a process...when done right...ain't fast for anybody. Welcome to the club and good luck!
  • So wait...the white hairs in my nose is the beginning and not the end?!? Yeek! Seriously, though, good luck with the new approach. I like the taste of real beer (good beer) too much to either give it up or go light, but moderation here, as in all things, is the key.
  • About seven years ago, I got into a successful weight loss plan over several months. At the time, I had a 90 minute commute each way (I literally drove 86 miles from my driveway to my parking spot) and had a few days a week where I wouldn't get home until after 11:00 at night. Here are a couple of things I did to help keep…
  • A few weeks back I did 9.3 miles in 46 min. with my two year old in a trailer. At the time my weight was 219 lb. Don't know about my trailer and my kid off hand. My HRM indicated a 536 calorie burn. I suspect your 500+ calculation is a bit high but the144 cals is definitely low. Meet in the middle somewhere?
  • Best of luck to you. I was a skeptic until I listened to a wise lady (my wife!) who was very successful here and now we're both having success here. Feel free to send me a friend request if you are looking for support!
