A few days before the monthlies start, I start to gain weight. It tends to be between 5-10 pounds, and it will slowly start to come down a few days after my monthly starts, and I am back to starting weight about a week after the weight went up. I tend to have 'period' clothing because I go up about 2 sizes or so during…

Hey, thanks for the shout out for the guy. I'll check him out. Honestly, I am not trying to say that fitness shouldn't be a priority. More responding to the OP's question, you know? Would that study convince me (or rather, do I think it should convince anyone?) that exercise should be increased to help dementia? And it…

One issue that comes up in mental health studies that I wish was considered more is that most people diagnosed with mental health issues are not given a good, head to toe, health evaluation before being diagnosed. As a result, you can often have people diagnosed as, say, depressed, when they have not been properly…

Sure. :-) I'm just gonna grab a couple I've tried in the last couple of months. Both my son and I found these bland enough that it just wasn't that great. Edible, mind you, but just...kinda bleh. 1. coconut lime tofu with soba noodles - https://www.chefdehome.com/recipes/691/buckwheat-soba-noodles-with-coconut-lime-tofu…

For me, it's exercise. I DO pay attention to calories, and can slowly lose weight doing so. If I exercise, even when I don't pay that much attention to calories, I lose weight much more, and as long as I stay somewhat active, it stays off. I don't tend to be that much hungrier when I exercise, so I'm sure that is part of…

I saw some, did not finish. Honestly? I found it about the same as some other food based documentaries: full of opinion, does not back up a lot of 'facts' with actual evidence, and sometimes says things that don't make sense or don't match up with current research, from what I have read. Is there some truth in there? Sure.…

I am not new to vegan cooking/eating in terms of making dishes (maybe 10 years now?) although I am not entirely plant based. Can't be, at the moment. One major hurdle (although there are more than one) is that I'm allergic to soy, and also I cannot have wheat, but have such a high sensitivity to wheat that I cannot have…

Any recipes you'd recommend, then?

Thanks for some ideas for good flavors to add. Some I knew, some sound like some great new ones. Wish I could try them all as the majority sound lovely (got some food allergies that interfere with my ability to enjoy them all, sadly). And for folks who gave some ideas for why vegan food might be bland: thank you. That's…

No, it would not, because this study is in no way showing that exercise helps prevent dementia. Literally does not show this, at all. It's correlation only. There IS no causation in this study; even the researchers have mentioned that. Is this study a good study to give us a starting point to see if exercise DOES impact…

Oh these are great,thank you!!

My recommendation: try to start an herb garden. It's saved me a bundle of money, and added not only some great flavor, but also a great source to experiment with a lot of different herb based pseudo-pestos (just the chopped herbs, nuts, oil, and salt).

LOL - I never learned to do that. But then again, I have never been that great of a cook, so perhaps, that's why. ^_^ I've seen some of the concepts you mention. Spices heated in oil especially works well. But the thing is, I don't see these being used in most vegan recipes I see. And I guess that's the question. Not so…

I do not doubt at all that recipes would be in the 'fail' category if trying to replace one type of fare with another like a substitute. Many celiacs in my family, so I've experienced that from the gluten free side of things, and trying to make one food taste like another is never good. Totally agree that trying to make…

I pretty much used 'American' as a catch all phrase, to try and distinguish between dishes that are completely based in another culture, vs. dishes being created in the US. At this point, I'd say the types of recipes that the majority of vegans I know, or of recipes that come up when I search for a vegan recipe of a…

Wish I could help - I ended up disconnecting some of my apps with my fitness pal because it was doing crap I didn't want it to, and I never could figure it out. :-/

Do not drink it because I am allergic to coffee. Started really reacting as an adult, but likely always had it a little as I found the smell of coffee nauseating since I was small. But now...woo, sucks as an allergy because everyone, everywhere, drinks the stuff, and trying to avoid it is just a righteous pain in the butt.

In my experience, I would honestly do as one of the gal's said - maintenance. There's an old saying: 9 months to put it on, 9 months to take it off. Your body has been healing itself up after the birth, and is now making food, and you really, really want to make sure your body has the nutrient and calories to do this, you…

That said, there is one thing that I run into , a LOT, where skepticism meets, hmmm, I'm gonna say a lack of understanding about the reality of human knowledge of health and medicine. Basically: there is a difference between 'currently proven to be impossible' and 'impossible as far as we know but new facts are putting…

Oh heck yeah. Although I tend to have skepticism of claims, but also certain aspects of research as well. I am one of those that checks for conflicts of interest when a study is completed, for the agenda of whoever is reporting the claims, of the potential for bias in studies. And while big established groups do often tend…

Socca - french flat bread that has chickpea flour, salt, oil, and water (many varieties can be found with different herbs added) Stir fried asparagus over rice - just lightly stir fry asparagus, add finely diced garlic and soy sauce until fragrant, and serve over cooked rice. For dessert - pomegranate arils over vanilla…

When it comes to allowing or banning what is used in our food, I very much prefer the UK's manner of doing it than America's, for one specific reason: one shows more concern for people's health. If you read the descriptions of what is banned, and why, in the UK, the reasons seem to boil down to: this either may be unsafe…

I just wanted to say thank you again for mentioning this. I have reduced sauces for a long time, but they don't always turn out well, and reading your comment, I finally went and hunted down information on it and found out tons of information on how to do it better, so I'm pretty excited. All thanks to this comment. :-)

Thanks. I like the carmelized onions a lot - I will see if I can use oil for them; they look awesome. Roux I'll have to see - when all the allergies showed up, we lost dairy (although I see that oil is sometimes used, so that's good!) and flour, both. But i can do potato starch if I make it myself, and that link had a lot…

That would be such a blessing here in the USA, but sadly, they don't do that at all. They have a completely optional 'may contain' statement for certain major allergens (as you can imagine, many companies don't bother with it), so if you see it, you know it's a potential issue, but if you do not see it...you get to call up…

I think I need to improve my skills in some of these areas, definitely. :-)

I would say yes. Some people have trouble absorbing a lot of things from only plant sources, actually. From what I have read, it tends to depend on your gut health and if you have any issues in the body that might impact your ability to absorb either plant proteins, or food in general. Like, while heme iron is more easily…

I had no idea we could pasteurize our own eggs. that is so cool - thanks!
