  • If you're brand new to lifting, then it is possible to build muscle on a calorie deficit while you continue to lose fat. It's something called "newbie gains". But I think after a while your muscle gains slow down and you'll have to start eating at a surplus in order to build more muscle. If your main goal is to continue to…
  • My boyfriend has been into fitness his whole life. I've been on and off the fitness train for the past few years so when we started dating last year he really motivated me to get back into it. He encouraged me to get into lifting weights instead of focusing on cardio so much. He's helped me learn proper form for various…
  • I think that's kind of the point of the gripz. They're supposed to be used for strengthening your grip and forearms so that when you take them off you'll find that you're able to handle more weight. I think including them in compound pulling lifts would make for a well-rounded program. Strong grip strength is important too!
  • I'm Laura from Alexandria. Been on MFP for a while now, but only recently moved to the DC area. I like to lift heavy things at the gym!
  • I was visiting my brother in Colorado a couple summers ago and we went to this fun park with one of those half-pipe style toboggan slides that you ride down on a roller sled. There were 2 parallel slides so my brother (who was 31 at the time) said "Let's race down!". I said "OK!". So we start racing and I end up losing…
  • Honestly, I don't think you should be worried about protein too much. And, if your goals are set up for keto on MFP, the goal for grams of protein will generally be more than your goal for grams of fat. Example, my diary is set at 1600 calories, with 60% fat, 35% protein, 5% carbs (traditional keto), and my goals calculate…
  • I would not count on "OMG I can eat all the calories I want!!" method. You still need to be aware of how many calories you are consuming, as they still play a role with calories in vs calories out. A traditional ketogenic diet follows 60-35-5 (fat-protein-carbs), which is to say you should get 60% of your calories from…
  • I've been lifting since Nov 2012, but never had any direction to follow, so i'm starting the Starting Strength program in the near future (hopefully next week if I can get through the book). I'm 26, 5'6", ~142 lb, and I'm not sure what my starting weights are for the lifts, but I think I"ll be somewhere around squat -…
  • I'll admit, it's pretty intimidating to go on the "man side" of the gym, but when it comes down to it, you just gotta do it! After a few days you won't even care anymore. I felt the same as you, but now I go and do my thing and don't care what any of the other people there think. If you don't know how to set up a machine…
  • We met on Match.com in July 2012. We had a great first date and started dating right away. We both felt a pretty strong connection to each other right off the bat, but after about a month of dating he received a job offer that would take him to DC (we were in Michigan at the time). Up to this point in my life I had never…
  • http://iud-divas.livejournal.com/ Great resource right there!! I think a lot of people's personal experiences with IUD's really depends on how their periods were before insertion. OP, just give it some time. 1 week is hardly enough time to make a judgement. :) I always had a normal period with mild cramps before my IUD.…

  • The way you describe ketosis makes it seem like a bad thing. Yes, your body will enter a state of ketosis in survival situations (like starvation), but if you eat enough calories from fat and protein you don't have anything to worry about. I haven't heard about what you said about how the "body burns fat much more…
  • I eat very low carb. And I LOVE it!! I can say it isn't for everyone, though. And yes, if you come off a low-carb diet you WILL gain back weight, but for me I really enjoy the foods I eat and I don't see it as a diet because I never feel limited in what I can eat. I still allow myself cheat days on the weekend where I can…
  • I'm doing one on July 31st as well in Michigan! I'm really excited for it!
  • The company I work for does something called Steptacular. It's a steps-per-day thing so it would require employees to purchase a pedometer. How it works is you wear the pedometer daily and get points for how many steps you take in a day. If you reach 10,000 steps in a day you get bonus points. I can't remember the exact…

  • My first pet was a cat named Lucy. She was mean though so I liked to call her Lucifer. I had a hamster named Bob. My current pet is a cat named Biscuit. We also call him Dupid (rhymes with stupid) or Disco Biscuit (no idea why).
  • I'm doing the WD at the end of July! I can't wait! I have heard the best training to do is a lot of running. I actually asked someone who did the WD in March this year and she said you will usually get to an obstacle and have to wait for other people to complete it before you can do it, so you'll get a couple minutes to…
  • bumpity bump! gotta try it!
  • It's your choice that you're doing this diet, not your coworkers. I understand how that is... Yesterday I got a veggie delight sub on wheat bread from Subway for lunch and my coworker commented "ew you got the wheat bread?? Bread is supposed to be white, not brown!" Then she went on to point out that I didn't have any meat…

  • Thanks for all the replies, I feel a little better about it now. :) I'll just keep doing what I'm doing. The good thing is he hasn't tried running outside at all and I've been trying to train outside more than the treadmill. Maybe I'll actually be able to keep up with him when we do the race since I know what it's like…
  • Since you're sick of just spaghetti squash alone, try mixing half spaghetti squash with half actual pasta. That way you still get pasta you're craving, but the calories are half of what it would be and it's still a filling dish.
  • Yeeeaaah, that's not looking so good right now. But at least we have a pretty solid 3rd string goalie with MacDonald. LET'S GO RED WINGS! 20th consecutive playoff appearance!
  • Hooray for Bell's! (MI native here :drinker: ) Dragonmead Final Absolution is delicious Any kind of Amber Ale is good Peninsula Porter by Michigan Brewing Co (Creamy dark beer) Dark Chocolate Stout I am just recently getting into craft beers and my boyfriend and I often get a six pack of "tasties" on the weekend to enjoy.…
  • What most people don't understand about MFP is that the calorie allotment they give you when you put in your goals ALREADY gives you a deficit based on what you told it you want to lose. As an example let's say your goal was to lose 1 lb per week. MFP will calculate your BMR (the calories your body uses if you didn't move…
  • I would NOT do any exercise on the same day that you donate. I think they recommend a day recovery before you do anything. You're not supposed to take the bandage off for at least 5 hrs I think, because the spot they poke you could start bleeding again. You're losing a pint of blood! Give your body some time to recooperate!
  • I donated a couple months ago and didn't really change anything about my diet. It was my first time donating and I didn't feel light-headed afterwards at all. Just make sure to drink plenty of fluids during the day! They also recommend iron-rich foods so your blood has a good iron count. I had a spinach salad for lunch…
  • I know someone that had some of these. He didn't run in them or anything, he just thought they were cool. All I know is they were really stinky!! I couldn't be near the person when they wore them cause it smelled so bad. So if you do get some, wash them often!!
  • She's not my personal trainer. She just gave a presentation at a meeting I attended. I liked the routine that she recommended so I decided to try it.
  • I totally agree with this. And I also have the Polar FT4 and love it!
