  • Find a workout buddy or someone on this site that you can friend and be responsible to report your progress to. If you have to tell others of your successes (and failures) you are more likely to work harder.
  • Celebrities who have lost weight (or otherwise gotten in shape) are to be admired and show that it CAN be done. My concern is that people will overlook the vast resources that they have available to them that most of us do not. This can cause people to become discouraged when they don't make the type of progress as quickly…
  • You are truly a joy and I so enjoy your postings! Keep up the good work, both on the biking and the posting!!
  • Rode with a crew that was training for Pelotonia and got my highest average speed ever at 16.6 mph over almost 23 miles with two good hill climbs and some rollers! I don't normally do sprints and am NOT comfortable in pace lines but my regular ride buddies were no shows. These four young men from a local insurance company…
  • UnderArmour compression shorts when running. Padded cycling shorts when cycling.
  • It just dawned on me (and made me smile) so I thought I'd share. I find the metric system psychologically fascinating - you make your distances longer (5K is 3.1 miles), your speeds faster (80 kph is 49.7 mph) but your weights lighter (see above). Just sayin'
  • Welcome. I'm not an expert, so I could have it wrong but watching how my wife and I are I have a problem with this statement. You have done something to make your body tired and sore by taxing it for a longer period of time without giving it the tools to heal itself. Exercise and proper nutrition WILL hurt even more for a…

  • @Stu. Looking good! Those are some vintange autos in the picture as well!
  • Well done. Check in with everyone tomorrow.
  • :noway: Sorry guys (and gals) but I had an error in my tracking - the total mileage is correct but my mileage for the week should read 134.87 vice 192.98. Something about that bothered me during the birthday party and I had to recheck it! :noway: Next week I'll be back to the club rides twice a week and whatever I can get…
  • Finished last ride for the week this morning. A charity ride, The Ride 4 Autism, was a bit hilly and 33.54 miles long. I rode it with my wife, Andrea, and she set a personal best average speed for rides over 30 miles at 13.3 mph. Also my last vacation ride as we are hiking tomorrow and I go back to work Monday. Still I can…
  • That is EXACTLY what you do! I wish that I was better at it as I end up "muscling" up hills and blowing my legs. The key to efficient riding is a constant peddle speed. You use your gears to maintain that speed. On the flat and downhill you will want to pedal faster but you should shift gears instead into "harder" gears…
  • Got in rides with 2 different clubs yesterday - both for about 30 miles but ENTIRELY different rides. In the morning, my wife and I rode with a leisurely group that goes out every Tuesday morning - rides - eats breakfast - rides again. This ride was marked by a couple of significant hills to climb and a continual light to…
  • Great thread! I agree with Dinos...it's not just a female thing (just most men won't admit it!). I grew up skinny with long muscle structure that could work for long periods of time but never impressed anyone (including me). When I finally started gaining weight because both my activity level and metabolism had slowed down…
  • Thanks for the, unfortunately accurate, but still cute story. When we ride together - I ride sweep as there is no way I can lead and not pull away from her. We DID have on matching jerseys yesterday from a ride we both did and coordinating do-rags from Hell, Michigan. We actually won't be increasing the stable just yet as…
  • Well I only got one ride in this week (tomorrow starts a new week) so did not make goal at 58.11 miles. Ride did have a little bit of everything in it: sun, group riding (kept my speed down), rain, wind, gravel, hills, and coaching my wife through an asthma attack (the riding afterwards thing...I don't know anything about…
  • You can get treaded tires for road bikes (at least here in the states) but the real issue with gravel and thin tires is punctures and slipping side to side (even with tread). Getting kevlar in the tires and keeping the tires properly inflated helps.
  • Let us know which one he uses. There are several for the iPhone but they eat up the phone's battery really fast and the iPhones battery is NOT replaceable. Rechargeable yes - replaceable no!
  • "which I know says nothing"? I don't get it as it says a lot to me. Any distance is distance travelled and keeps you going toward your goal. It's so easy to get into an all or nothing mindset (happens to me a lot) but you'll actually go further taking it little by little. You have a right to be pleased.
  • Still taking the week off from cycling as we brought the dog with us for this trip. Doing a lot of walking (about 5 miles a day) and killed 2 pair of athletic shoes. (I think they died more of old age than hard use - the timing was just humorous.) Stopped posting my exercise and nutrition as well due to time contraints…
  • Well done everyone. Don't have the bikes with us this trip but Ludington, MI is extremely bike friendly. Trying to walk 5 or more miles a day and may jog if the weather is right. Saw a sign today on the left-most bike-lane telling cyclists not to enter as they are supposed to ride WITH traffic. Never seen that on a sign…
  • Good ride!
  • I'm gonna HAVE to look at the pictures closer (or go to the profiles and read them)....sorry! :embarassed:
  • Thanks Dinos (I think?). That one of the purposes of a riding kit. Not that I ride fast enough to worry about aerodynamics but loose trousers can lead to saddle sores and I DON'T need those. There are enough things in my life trying to become a pain in my backside. I didn't mean to leave the ladies out of the…
  • Had my only ride of the week tonight and put in 36+ miles with a couple of good hills and a variety of rollers. Had a good ride moving in and out of groups and learning to use gears better for an average of 16.2 mph. Only need 35 more miles to pass last year's total mileage. Won't make weekly goal as we are going on…
  • Welcome Ellem86. No the rain itself won't hurt you but remember to have dry clothes available as well as a way to dry your shoes. Wet feet can become a problem really fast and waylay your plans.
  • What did you do for exercise before cycling? To put in that kind of mileage after only a month can shread muscles and joints and lay you up for quite a while. Welcome to the group!
  • Finished Steve Barbour Memorial Ride at the 100K length this morning (and early afternoon). Rode with a lady from Lifetime Fitness. While holding me back at times she was a great pacer to keep me from burning out too soon. No big hills but a lot of long pull elevations. The ride was the first for this organization and was…
  • OK. Time to resurrect this. Next "New Perspective" question: What fallacy about people who watch what they eat really pisses you off?
  • Had a great ride tonight though the humidity had be wondering. Started off with a large "B" group (16-18 mph) and rode in the group for most of the 32 miles. My avg speed was 16.5 mph though that may be low as I had a problem with knocking the spedometer out of alignment on an aggressively tight turn. Even at that it…
