if you have a smartphone or iphone, maybe your strap is compatible with one of the apps for HRMs? wouldn't know much about Polar straps compatibility as I use Zephyr HxM connected to my phone, so not sure which app you could check

also when you get well enough to start doing any kind of crunches, sit-ups, leg lifts etc, keep your legs bent in the knees (not laying straight on the floor) - it also takes some pressure out of the lumbar spine.
