  • May I suggest using noise canceling headphones?
  • Just go ahead and do it. The big guys may turn out to be irritating or they may turn out to be nice guys, but that shouldn't matter. Just go ahead and do your thing, don't worry about the rest.
  • It took me about 2 and a half months to complete my first 5K (on a treadmill). I did it in around 33 minutes, but I weighted 110Kgs then (242 pounds). I'm 1.88cm or around 6' 2" tall. So not "obese", but certainly overweight. Prior to that I had exercised on and off, and had player football (soccer) from time to time. My…
  • You look 20 years younger. Great job!
  • Frankly, unless you're around 300 pounds, you should not be burning more than 120-150 calories per mile. So it seems like Endomondo is vastly overestimating your calories, while Runtastic is being slightly conservative with your calories burned. I use Runtastic myself and have found it to be pretty accurate.
  • Are you taking days off? 7 hours of sleep should be enough, but only if you're actually resting a day or two in a given week.
  • Are you sure you have both apps properly calibrated for your weight/height/age?
  • Do you have a smartphone? If so, you can download one of the many Couch to 5K apps that have built-in training routines for you (they're usually abbreviated as C25K or such on app stores). The important thing to remember is to train regularly (at least 3 times a week), even on days when you just don't feel it. Also…
  • This one I disagree with. Yes, it's not polite to use a cardio machine if you're just walking slowly, texting on your cell, but if I'm training for a marathon and have to run a 15K or a 20K that day, I'm not stopping at 30 minutes just because it's busy. If it's busy, wait for your turn or go bug someone else.
  • Nike+ works indoors - and it does so surprisingly well. You have to either carry the phone in your pocket, or use an armband. Before you begin, you specify it's an indoors workout and it'll do the rest.
  • I use a treadmill so generally wear shorts (Nike Dri-Fit) and a running t-shirt (also Nike Dri-Fit). I don't run outside in the winter, so I've mostly kept that combination (sometimes preferring sweatpants when it's really cold outside).
  • Great job. When I started I could barely do 5-6 minutes, and then had to stop for a walk. Now I do 40-50 minutes without really feeling tired. My next goal is to run 60 minutes - without walking. It's a great feeling when you accomplish something that you thought impossible before.
  • It depends on when you're running. If in the morning, some cereal and a banana about an hour or an hour and a half before running. If in the evening, make sure to have lunch/dinner at least an hour and a half before your workout. Definitely have a banana, for the potassium.
  • I like to listen to Badly Drawn Boy's - A Journey from A to B to get me up and running. I also listen to quite a bit of Massive Attack, Tosca, DJ Shadow, etc. Not all of them are up-tempo songs, but I enjoy listening to that type of music when I'm running.
  • I think you should do it. I used to consume 6 cans of Coke every single day (and it wasn't diet Coke either). I went cold turkey one day, and never looked back. It can be done, and it's easier than it seems. If you still want to have a soda from time to time, Ginger Ale or Indian Water are both relatively better than diet…
  • Sedentary is basically for people that are either unemployed and watch TV all day long (with a break here and there), or for people that work in an office, sitting most of the time. If you're on your feet 4 hours and have to do actual physical labor, then you're either lightly active or even active (depending on how…
  • Great, congratulations!
  • Rest days are called rest days for a reason. You need to give your body some time to heal and your muscles time to grow. If you don't do that, you will not see the results you want. There's such a thing as too much exercise.
  • Techno can be defined in many ways, so there's that. I myself use Nokia Music on a smartphone (Lumia 920). The idea is: you feed it three musicians you like/listen to, and based on that, it gives you a whole host of new - and related - music. I also use Spotify from time to time, and prefer to listen to the likes of…
  • Runtastic Pro, Endomondo, and Nike+. I used to use Nike+ a lot (have over 700 miles logged), but switched to Runtastic when I started logging my exercises on MFP (Runtastic does it automatically, as does Endomondo, but not Nike+). I use a Garmin Forerunner now so don't use my iPhone apps as much.

  • No, not at all. It's a good idea to rest a bit before picking up again (interval training). As you keep running, you'll find that you can run longer/faster while maintaining a lower heart rate than you currently do. But for now, take a break every once in a while and walk. If you still feel like you're not doing enough,…
  • Congrats! Keep going strong, you're doing great!
  • She's 92 and you want her to lift and run? Um... you need to reconsider what you're doing here.
  • You look about 15 years younger on the right picture. Congratulations, amazing transformation!
  • You should just ignore the men doing the heavy-lifting; they're men, after all, and will lift heavier than you will (generally). Just do your thing and zone out the rest. I'm a male myself and do the same with some guys that like to walk around showing off their "guns". I don't care, we have different goals in life so I…
  • Do you have a smartphone? You can track your distance/calories pretty accurately with something like Runkeeper.com (apologies if the link offends the admins or smth).
