  • I have about 20 pounds to go, but I'm on "lose 1 pound per week." Question: when you say "this program" is there a place on MFP where I can see what "the program" is? Or is it just tracking calories and exercise? I hear people talk about weighing once a week only, and I see "NSV" on the blogs, but I haven't seen anything…
  • I would also think that you may not be eating enough calories to keep your metabolism where it needs to be. It's possible that your body is in "starvation mode." Try eating back your exercise calories for a couple of weeks and see if that gets you off the dime.
  • i only have done eliptical at a gym when on vacations/traveling, but I try to go backwards when it says to. But its too hard. I cannot last the whole time. I think its using different muscles, so that's good, but I have to do it in intervals to keep from having spagetti legs.
  • Try mapping your route using this web site: http://www.beewellforlife.com I use it to get both a distance and a calorie count. Then I take my distance divided by my time to get a speed. I log my exercise on both MFP and BeeWell. The BeeWell site donates to Breast Cancer Support for every mile you log walking, running or…
  • I think there are 2 issues and if these don't affect you then there's nothing to worry about. 1. eating breakfast gets your metabolism going so you burn more calories during the morning 2. if a person doesn't eat breakfast, they're more likely to overeat later. If you're having coffee, perhaps your metabolism is up and…
  • My husband is a minister and he says communion "food" is divine calories and they are counted as grace with no cost. We don't even count communion bread when it's actual bread. And I agree that the stand up / sit downs of church burn off whatever actual calories might possibly be in there.
  • I have dry eyes and elevated eye pressure and I take both drops (Restasis) and Flax Seed Oil. First, let me encourage you to keep trying different docs until you find one who will work with you and is not rude, (You're paying them, for heaven's sake!!) Second, I wonder if your "eye doc" is an optometrist or an…
  • You certainly can!! Last time was just a practice. Practice makes perfect.
  • I reccomend cutting back on his nap time - wake him up earlier. Thing is, you have to decide which is worse: a cranky kid who got woke up from his nap or kid awake too early in the morning. There will be LOTS of "phases" and hiccups like this. But the bright side is - he sleeps all night! You can consider yourself lucky in…
  • I'm thinking that the amount of difference in calories for the bananas is probably about as flexible as the amount of calories you're going to burn at the gym, so in the larger picture, it doesn't really matter. Just pick one that seems close to your banana size and then focus on getting fit at the gym.
  • I suggest that you do two things: First, get out (or make if you don't have one) a list of the reasons you want to lose the weight and read through it. Second go outside for a walk. Even if you only have 10 minutes getting outside can make a real difference in stress eating. If you're actually hungry, eat something healthy…
  • I make oatmeal - the old fashioned kind. I boil the water while stretching after my workout, then add the oats and turn the stove off while I take a shower. This makes it a little drier than if I only did the 5 minutes cooking in the directions, but I add 1/4 cup vanilla yogurt (lowfat) to 1/3 c. oatmeal and it makes a…
  • It's so great that you are working with your granddaughter on this site. You two will be a source of encouragement for each other. I live in Alaska. Can't walk outside yet - too icy and it would be taking my life in my hands. But I hit the treadmill most mornings and ski on the weekend. I teach First Grade. Good luck to…
  • Wow. I would say that if your friend is opening up to you about it that is about the same as asking for help. Go for it!
  • I agree completely! Yes, it's your diet, but it's also your life! If you can't eat a half piece of pie with friends every once in a while, what's the point?
  • I have actually heard of a "diet" in which you purposely eat all you want once a week (? don't exactly remember how often) in order to keep your body out of starvation mode.
  • Hi Lilduckie, I track my food and exercise on MFP and one of the ways it really helps me is that when I feel like eating something I know I shouldn't, I make myself go on here and read a few blog entries, check my food totals for the day, etc. Then its usually easier to resist. I also really like tracking my exercise on…
  • What is the gist of the Thurman Makeover?
  • I think that if they are true friends they like you just the way you are, no matter what you weigh or how you look. So I understand that they didn't tell you before. BUT, if they are giving icky looks and making comments about regaining the 10, you have to evaluate if they are trying to be helpful to you as a friend, or if…
  • Hi and Welcome! Consider telling us just a little about yourself. It's nice to be "friends" with people we have a bit in common with.
  • It doesn't really sound like he's supporting you. Sounds more to me as though he's dealing with his own problem of quitting the gym and turning to flab by trying to help you do the same. He's a grown up and needs to make his own choices, but if it seems right to you, after explaining what you're doing you could consider…
  • Don't be afraid to ask, at the restaurant, how they cook the choices you are considering. Wait staff are used to this by now, with all the food allergies / preferences / health concerns out there. I'd go with fresh fish,- but not if it's breaded. Rosemary chicken might be a good choice, but depends how they cook it.
  • first thing in the morning: relieve myself, weigh. I think that's the way to get the most consistent measurement. However, I do find that if I ate a larger dinner (eg: steak on my anniversary) it shows on the scale in the morning, but will be "gone" by the next day. I do weigh every day, even though a lot of people on this…
  • You might try eating some high protein foods. Also, consider light exercise as an alternative to eating - go for a walk.
  • This site really helps me be honest about what I eat (more than I used to think) and it has also helped me make better choices. it's very motivating to see how many calories are in ONE sugar cookie. I can eat a LOT of healthy food to equal up to one or two bad choices. I've learned how many calories are in a lot of basic…
  • A suggestion I read here on MFP a while ago: take one, eat one or two bites, while you are chewing, sprinkle tobasco sauce on the rest. (Just make sure none of the kids get ahold of it!)
  • Consider checking out Overeaters Anonymous to see if there is one in your area.
  • I'm with you!! As I get older (I'm 47 - ha! first time I've written that number!) I'm more interested in taking care of myself instead of taking care of everyone else (though I still have a healthy dose of that, too). My motto is "A Healthier Second Half" (of my life). Cheers!
  • Welcome! You'll find that there is a lot of support available on this site I have found it Very Helpful to record everything I eat, even though sometimes its hard to be honest with myself. It helps me get back on track right away instead of waiting until I've gained 5 pounds (ugh!). Curious: is your daughter young or is…
  • To just log calories, once you click on "add food" under a meal (brkfst, lunch dinner, snack), you see an entry box for looking up the food you ate (or plan to eat). Above the box are the words: Search our Database. BUT, just to the right of those words is some small print in blue that says "Quick add calories only."…
