  • So green and beautiful Hikergirl! I absolutely LOVE the meadow photo! Don't get me wrong, I love being able to go from mountains to ocean in less than a day, but sometimes I wish I didn't live in a desert.
  • Height: 5'5" Weight: 116.5 BMR: 1322 TDEE: 2038 Intake: 1440 (and then I also eat back about half of the calories burned from exercise) Macros: I don't watch this too closely but I'm probably like Martina...60% carbs / 25% fat / 15% protein I used to be a vegetarian, so my protein sources are mostly legumes, white meat, or…
  • You look beautiful in your dress and all that matters is that you enjoy your day with the person you love most! I understand your stress though. I'm getting married next April, and I'm considering buying a dress closer to the wedding just to minimize the risk of it not fitting later. I'm planning on something…
  • Over Memorial day weekend, I took my boyfriend up to a bed and breakfast near Big Bear Lake for his birthday. We had lots of car trouble the day we drove up, but this awesome mechanic fixed the car and got it back to us that day. We relaxed at the bed and breakfast and then had an amazing dinner at the Peppercorn Grille.…
  • I'd have to agree. The miles you put in on the long run each week are the most important. I have yet to train for a marathon, but I often missed my shorter runs during the week when training for my first half marathon (my work schedule is rather unpredictable). I still made my long run every week, and slowly but surely…
  • "A trio of Southern California half marathons have formed an alliance to create a Half Marathon Triple Crown award to honor participants who finish all three half marathons in the same calendar year." So sorry to rain on your parade. I made the same mistake last year. Almost signed up for AFC to go for the Triple Crown…
  • I'm doing the triple crown this year too! I think you have to complete all three races in the same calendar year though, starting with Carlsbad in January. I've done Carlsbad and La Jolla, and I'm signing up for AFC for my final race in August. I agree on the strength training. My personal choice is yoga. Not sure it's the…
  • First off, Congratulations! Starting to add on miles in the beginning is tough, but it gets easier and easier. The first time I upped my miles to 5, I felt like I had lead on my legs by the end. I was slow, but I finished. Now I can run 5 miles easy and much quicker. When you're adding distance, focus first on finishing,…
  • The week before a race, I keep my diet the same and avoid alcohol. The night before, I typically eat pasta with red sauce and sometimes ground turkey. The morning of, I always have oatmeal with nuts and fruit and a small cup of coffee + 2 antacids just in case nerves get the best of me. So far, I haven't had any GI…

  • *Not a doctor, advice based on my own experience* Welcome to my world :). I started treating my allergies 2 years ago and I've come a long way. I take zyrtec everyday. I also now take Singulair every day since I developed exercise-induced asthma. Flonase will take more than 2 days to really kick in, so give it time. If you…
  • Haha yea, when you hike the 14kers in CO you START at 10,000 feet! Gaining 4,000 ft in just 4.5 miles was definitely intense. Steep the whole way. Along with smaller peaks and trails on a regular basis, we're planning on doing the remaining saints (gorgonio and jacinto) which are taller and longer, and hopefully Whitney to…
  • If you map your run on mapmyrun.com, it will rate the hills on your course in terms of difficulty. This may give you more information to fine-tune your training as you wish. Breathing in through your nose helps to warm and humidify the air before it hits your lungs. If you have asthma, this is EXTREMELY important. I'm…
  • Running isn't for everyone, and I'm glad that you found something that works for you. I don't understand your need to frame this as an either/or situation. The legend also goes that the messenger, Phillippides, also fought in the battle. He had both strength and endurance. In any case, the legend is hardly present at…
  • I believe that you can achieve your goals, but you will also have to watch your calorie intake. I was also at a healthy weight when I started, but I was slowly gaining and my clothes weren't fitting so well anymore. I've been at a 1450 cal/day goal + training for half marathons + hill training. It took some time (I didn't…
  • First training hike of the summer in preparation for Kili - San Antonio Mountain or Mount Baldy, 4.5 miles to the top with 4,000 ft elevation gain. Yesterday was such a beautiful day to hike, and I'm happy to say that I've now conquered the "three saints" of Southern California.
  • I agree with the calorie estimates Rhunt - and you're doing fantastic sticking with your goals :). After I went to maintenance and put on a few lbs, I decided to stop linking MFP with my FitBit and logging my exercise regularly. Now I'm just trying to stay under goal and I'm only logging up to half of my exercise cals if…
  • Ah so many good recommendations. I just bought a CW-X Versatx because it was half off the amazon price on theclymb and I had a 10 dollar credit, but now I'm super nervous because all of the reviews say they run small. I think this was part of it, but I've stayed in this one before and had no problems. I'm going for the…
  • That's amazing! Hoping I get near there on my fourth this August.
  • Haha, that's the kind I currently have! Maybe I should just stick to what I know :)
  • I love lemon on apples! It keeps them from browning and adds a fantastic flavor. I also typically pack banana, a nut butter on bread with honey, or a tuna with avocado. For quick energy (and not feeling so blah), the cliff bars don't work well - they're pretty heavy. A powerade of some sort or those energy gels or goos are…
  • I agree with much of the advice above: First and foremost, good shoes that fit you, your feet, and your running style are key. For me, switching to a midfoot strike from a heel strike helped take the stress off of my knees. I ended up getting shoes that helped me learn to do this. You need to spend some time strengthening…
  • Ah I haven't checked my post about Kili in a while. Great advice I will have to take a look again :)! Thank you so much!!! I agree though, from what I hear unless you hike a higher altitude that same week, you can't do much about acclimatization. For Kili, some people arrive earlier and hike a nearby peak first and then do…
  • I loved this recipe I just used last week: http://www.marthastewart.com/336467/roasted-salmon-with-herbed-yogurt I blogged about cooking it here: https://csquaredculinaryadventures.wordpress.com/2013/04/17/greek-yogurt-extravaganza/
  • My original goal was the weight that I was for most of my teens and 20s. The weight puts me at a BMI of 18.3. I've lost 8 lbs now and I have a BMI of 19.5 and a waist to height ratio of 0.423. These numbers are within healthy limits and I realized recently in looking in the mirror that I'm happy with my body now. Being…
  • I think it's time to move to California! I take for granted that I can run outdoors year round. I don't think I could ever stand a treadmill. Sorry the weather has been so bad lately for you guys!
  • I'm going to wear one to the office tomorrow. Unfortunately I will probably be asked to wear something over it for my meetings with parents/school districts, but I will definitely have a race shirt on and visible when possible tomorrow.
  • That's awesome! Congrats!

  • I love your goal! I hiked a portion of it over 2 days a few years back. Our original plan was to tackle a 14ker, but due to an avalanche we ended up on the Colorado Trail instead. It was no misfortune. The trail was absolutely beautiful. I wish I lived closer! Good luck and please post pictures!
  • I'd say first and foremost, get a good pack that fits your body well. Also I agree that you really shouldn't need to carry more than 40. The gear they make these days can be really lightweight. My boyfriend and I backpack together split the tent and such and keep it around 30. If you're worried, I would practice carrying…
