Fitbit and MFP stopped talking to each other
I did the update for Fitbit and now Fitbit and MFP are not talking to each other and I am not getting credit for my steps. Any suggestions what I can do?

Bacon question
Are the calories given for bacon for cooked or raw? I ask this because the last couple of mornings I have had a breakfast of 2 slices of bacon and 3 oz of hashbrowns, cooked in some of the fat from the bacon. If the bacon calories are raw, I don't have to log extra fat in my diary because it is already in the bacon count.…

Goodbye old friends :(
I just went through my closet and tried on all of my dresses. I had to say goodbye to some of my absolute favorites that are so big on me now that they don't look good at all. I tend to wear a lot of basic "A" line or princess seam dresses which can look good through a range of weight, and I lose last in the bust so my…

Breakfast ideas
I need new ideas for breakfast. I am burned out on my oatmeal or toast and need something else. Difficulty: No calcium because I take a high potency iron pill. I get plenty of calcium in with lunch and dinner so I don't want to move my pill to another time. No eggs or egg beaters. I really enjoy my hard cooked eggs as a…

Arthritis help
I have been doing more walking and my right foot started hurting. I suspected extensor tendonitis and rested it. I started walking again and it hurt just as bad so I went to an ortho who is also a sports medicine specialist. After x-rays and an MRI I was diagnosed with degenerative osteoarthritis in the foot. His…

Gadgets
Many members here have HRM's and/or some kind of fitness trackers. What other gadgets do you have and use to help you, either by helping to track or monitor your exercise or that help motivate you? (BTW: I have a Fitbit Flex). Mine: * I set a playlist on my IPod specifically for walking with beat heavy, faster songs that…

I'm off!!!!!!!!
I saw my doctor this morning and I am now off the diabetes meds. Less than a year after diagnosis and I am diet and exercise controlled. YAY!

How are you spending New Years?
Last year I spent New Years Eve in the hospital getting blood transfusions for acute anemia (ended up receiving 4 units). I plan to spend this New Years Eve day at my local donation center giving back one of those units, then open a split of bubbly later at home to celebrate a year of great health, once my hemoglobin got…

It's BLT season again!
No, I don't mean bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwiches. 'Tis the season for those bites, licks, and tastes. I caught myself licking the spoon as I was making the Yule Log cake tonight and remembered. I just have to remember to keep them small and account for them. they can add up in a hurry.

Losing too fast since I started swimming
I started swimming laps about a month ago when my doctor advised me to reduce the high to mid impact cardio due to degenerative arthritis in my foot. I have been taking a water aerobics class since March and started doing my laps for an hour before the class. My weight loss has suddenly jumped from an average of 1.4 lb a…

Halfway there (with photos)!
I started losing weight back at the first of the year when I came home from 4 days in the hospital (full story in my profile). First I just made sure I was eating a more balanced diet, then started counting calories and macros in February when I discovered MFP. This morning when I weighed myself, I was halfway to my goal!…

Sprouts!
Anybody here grow their own sprouts? What seeds do you sprout? What kind of sprouter do you use? I recently started raising sprouts and have a mix of broccoli, alfalfa, radish, and clover. I just bought some Russian Red kale seeds and have a batch sprouting right now that is half my regular mix and half kale. I use a quart…

Swimming question
Does anybody have an idea how to estimate calories burned when swimming by kicking only? I have been doing laps with the kickboard and flutter kicking but can't find any estimates as to how much I might be burning. Eventually I will be doing freestyle laps but can't do the arms at the moment.

A little perspective
I have lost 70 lb so far. This morning I had to haul a 40 lb bag of cat litter up 2 flights of stairs. It really hit home just how much extra weight I was carrying around and the stress it put on my body and especially joints. Amazing that I was able to get around at all. I can't imagine trying to haul 2 bags of litter at…

Good source of potassium . . . and yummy!
I checked the database for info on pomegranates before buying a couple and I noticed that one pomegranate has about the same amount of potassium as a medium banana. I had no idea they were high in potassium and I hate bananas so I will definitely be indulging this winter! I love pomegranates and they are easy to eat once…

Feeling crummy after going to the gym? There may be a reason.
Interesting article about air quality. http://www.mnn.com/health/healthy-spaces/blogs/is-the-air-at-your-gym-making-you-sick Of course, when you are around a bunch of other people breathing heavily you would expect more CO2 in the air. The dust and formaldehyde amounts are interesting.

Great lower calorie/carb alternative to potatoes in soups and stews
I have been playing around with some of my stew recipes and had an epiphany. Instead of using potatoes, why not use turnips? They hold up well in crockpot recipes, taste good, and are just as filling as a potato. I have no idea why I keep ignoring this great root veggie, especially because we used to eat them regularly as…

Podiatrist or Orthopedist?
I am having problems with pain on the top of my foot and in the front of the ankle. A week off from exercise, RICE, naproxin, etc have not healed it, although the pain is less. My internet self-diagnosis is extensor tendonitis but the sites I looked at said that it could also be a stress fracture. I think I need to see a…

Hey, this MFP thing works!
I had a little experiment this last week. I had to take time off from my exercise routine in order to heal tendonitis in my right foot. Normally I would take a water aerobics class 3 x a week and 6 of the 7 days I make sure I get my 10,000 steps, which includes a 3 mile walk on the days I don't have class and frequently a…

Had to up my calories.
I recently had to raise my calories from 1700 to 1900. It turns out that my activity level has gone up enough that I was losing too fast, even eating back exercise calories. I decided to go from sedentary to lightly active and now I only eat back about 2/3 of the calories earned from my water aerobics class and none from…

Is it just me????
Is it just me or has common sense pretty much deserted MFP? I have only been here since February so this may be a phase, you long timers can let me know. It seems that lately there have been so many threads about so many extreme ways of eating for so many spurious reasons. Water only fasting, cutting out entire food…

Things your parents taught you (that aren't common)
Every child is taught things by their parents like how to cook, how to drive, how to play sports, etc., but there are always those oddball things that not every parent teaches their child. What did you learn that most kids are not taught? In my case, since I was a little girl my Dad taught me how to sharpen knives with a…

First Big Goal? Nailed it!
This morning I weighed in at 249.6 lb. My first big goal was to reach 250 and I had hoped to do it by my birthday which is still a week away. I started at 311 on December 30, 2013, which is what I weighed the day before I went into the hospital (my hospital story is in my profile). At the time, I decided that I would go…

Need snack ideas
I have run out of ideas for snacks, especially at bedtime when I want to fill in my remaining calories. I need: high protein, low fat, low to medium carbs I already eat: nuts, greek yogurt, cheese, eggs, protein powder, Quest bars I am not interested in: smoothies I have no problem with fat or carbs, I just am usually…

Having trouble taking it slow
I know slow and steady is the way to go, but I am getting a bit impatient here. I have my settings so I lose 1 lb a week and am averaging a little closer to 1.4 lb. I am 2 lb away from my first mini goal, which was to reach 250 by my birthday on the 21st. My next mini goal is 230 by Christmas, then Onederland by next…

Old friends: hard to say goodbye to
I am going through my closet and the boxes of too small clothes I have stashed. I have a few things that I am almost shrunk out of and they are going to be really hard to say goodbye to. Most are blouses that have been really perfect. I have six in a couple of similar styles that are very comfortable, dressy enough for…

Great place for bad weather walking
I live in an apartment building that is shaped like an "E" without the middle line. We have underground parking that follows the footprint of the building with exits at both ends. Today it was raining and I wasn't sure how long it would last (and it was too hot for a rain jacket) so I went downstairs to do some walking.…

My scale is stuck - literally
I had a suspicion that something was wrong with my scale because I weighed exactly the same, to the tenth of a pound, every day for almost a week. If I weighed myself later in the day or picked something up, it would show the extra weight. I borrowed a friend's scale and started using both. Hers showed a loss of close to…

What appliances are on your counter?
We all have those small appliances that stay on the counter all of the time, those that get put away and used on occasion, and those that we buy and they never again see the light of day. What are yours? Mine: On the counter 24/7: Kitchenaid (the meat grinder attachment gets used occasionally and put away) Toaster Electric…

Ladies - question about clothing (NOT bras)
I am looking for something a little longer in the legs to wear to the gym once it gets colder, but not sweat pants because I get too hot in them. (I live in Wisconsin so I really want something warmer than shorts when going too and from the car and I don't want to bother changing at the gym.) Currently I wear a pair of…
