Dates for the Diary...

07/03/2015 - Strade Bianchi
08/03/2015 - Roma Maxima
22/03/2015 - Milan Sanremo
29/03/2015 - Gent Wevelghem
05/04/2015 - Ronde Van Vlaanderen
12/04/2015 - Paris Roubaix
19/04/2015 - Amstel Gold
22/04/2015 - Fleche Wallonne
26/04/2015 - Liege Bastogne Liege
04/10/2015 - Il Lombardia

Usual Rules Apply, with one small tweak, Book a single ride (if you commute take the long way home and book that one), recorded on strava or garmin connect. Longest distance gets 25 points, next 20, then 16,12,11,10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,and 1. Spot prizes / bonuses also awarded - these are announced before the event, and are usually either picture bonuses (get a point for a picture of a windmill on paris-roubaix day, or say a roadside chapel on Il Lombardia day.

The small tweak to the rules being this... Anyone who has entered any of the "pre-classic sportif rides" that are based around these classics (and generally are run on the day prior to the actual race-day, over the same route on closed roads) gets to enter their ride from the sportif, provided photographic proof of competing in the sportif is added to the thread. Off the top of my head, I think that this year the Paris-Roubaix and RVV both have sportives run the day before the race, though I'm happy to expand this to any other races that also have a pre-event sportif. (L'Eroica doesn't count, as it's at the other end of the summer to the Strade Bianche BTW ;) )

Best way to get an idea of how it works, and how much of a giggle it actually can be is to look at the 2013 thread...

http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/866408-mfp-cycling-classics-challenge

each race day gets a little write-up of the history of the race, basically to make the whole spot prizes make sense...

then we go out and ride, record it, and see who wins that days race.

there's also a league table (where the scores above come in) which runs across the entire season, and at the end, someone gets the "King of the Classics" tag.

please indicate if you think you may be up for entering this ASAP, as i'd like to know if it's going to be worthwhile running it this year... not a great deal of point in bothering if there's only 2 people entering.

I'm in. It's going to be tough for the early rides as I'm working 62 hours shifts over the weekends but I'll try to slip in a ride over lunch, or dinner, or breakfast, or where ever.

Hi Mark, I might give this one a miss, we're doing up the house at weekends hoping to get it ready to go on the market in May so I'll miss all the early rides. Hoping to get fit and well for the Grand Tours!! But I'll still read all the ride threads, loved seeing everyone's ride pics!

don't forget folks - it's not a "all or nothing" deal - if you want to ride, you can dip in and out as it suits you... I strongly doubt i'll be out and about for the first weekend myself - maybe not even the first month worth - but if I'm able to get out, i'll join in as and when...

It's not like the Grand Tour Challenges, where it's team-based and we need to sign up in advance and try to commit for the duration...

Even if it's just a 10 minute spin to escape from the paint-fumes while decorating ;) it's worth throwing you're hat into the ring.

Never too late - if it's running, people can just dip in and out as weather and other commitments decree..

Mine as well to be honest - just hoping i'll be fit to actually ride some of them myself... otherwise, i'll be in front of the TV watching the races live then on the PC keeping the spreadsheets up to date.

okay folks- the entry thread is now created - i've added the potted history for the Strade Bianche and the Roma Maxima from the outset, along with the "bonus point" items.

Basically, lay in you're supplies of italian food and drink for the weekend, get the maps out and find some "unmetalled roads" for saturdays ride and some evidence of "former civilizations" for the sunday one...

Just reviewing the rules for the extra points on the Strada Bianchi - too bad I "upgraded" my 1986 steel bike to modern components. I could have used the extra points :D

Yeah, I've a pretty much complete bike that's just one year out up in the loft... Frame's compliant, but the components are the Grey Shimano 600's rather than the Arabesque pattern ones - sort of a halfway house before they started calling it Ultegra - just before the handlebar shifters trickled down to 600 series...

I've half a Campag Groupset that's spot on date, but its missing the expensive bits - working rear mech and the Delta Brakes... oh - and the hubs come to think of it, but then again, I rarely could afford matching hubs back in the day either!

I have a good friend with a lot of old Campag components in boxes around his garage and on old bikes as well. I told him he might want to consider putting them up for sale some day.

the bits I want seem to go for RIDICULOUS money, generally getting snapped up by collectors over in germany...

Delta Brakes are making Anything from £250-1000 depending on the year, and condition...
Correct period Record rear mechs are bringing nearly the same as a brand new one... It's not likely to be a cheap endeavour getting this bike in one piece.

Oh - in case anyone's wondering - despite the Roma Maxima race proper being cancelled due to "organizational problems" we're still going to run our version...

Really enjoyed my version of the Strade Bianche today. The one day classics are really special events and the varying surfaces definitely sort out the men from the boys

I wasn't rushing, because there's no ride this weekend... If everyone's got their rides logged I'll have a look at it later today... After I've watched the Paris/Nice and Tirreno Adriatico, obviously...
