The Power of Positive Thinking:
How Your Attitude Affects Weight Loss

Positive thinking plays a significant role in your weight loss efforts. Perpetual negative thoughts can lead to self-defeating behaviors such as going off your diet, overeating and skipping your exercise routine. Positive thoughts, on the other hand, can increase your motivation and energy level.

Positive Thinking and Weight Loss - Positive thoughts are empowering. A negative attitude can set processes in motion that makes losing weight difficult, if not impossible. Berating yourself every time you eat the wrong foods, constantly focusing on what you cannot eat and approaching your exercise regimen with dread are all ways that negative thought patterns can sabotage your weight loss efforts.

When you hold a negative image of yourself, you rob yourself of much-needed energy. When feeling powerless, depressed or unmotivated, it's easy to skip your daily workout or eat a bag of potato chips to feel better. However, tuning into how you feel, acknowledging those feelings and transforming those thoughts into something more positive can actually help you to achieve your weight loss goals faster.

Strategies for Increasing Positive Thinking - A common response to those who tell you to think more positively is often: "I feel what I feel. I can't help how I feel." Positive thinking is only effective if it is in alignment with your true feelings. If you sincerely feel down about your body weight, telling yourself that everything is okay will often create internal discord.

The trick is to tap into those feelings that ring true for you. For example, keep a daily journal in which you write down your negative thoughts and feelings. If you feel you are lacking in willpower or just can't overcome your cravings, write those thoughts down. When you acknowledge the darker emotions, they often tend to have less power over you.

It is important to then make a conscious effort to transform your thoughts. It may be true that you often cannot overcome your food cravings or stick to your diet. However, if there are times when you are able to stand strong, then focus on those moments and celebrate the triumphs. Maybe you put less sugar in your coffee today and said "no," to a second slice of pizza. Giving attention to the positive things will help to create greater self-esteem and motivation to continue with your weight loss efforts.

Positive Thinking and Setting Manageable Goals - One of the ways that a negative attitude can prevail during dieting is if you have set unreasonable goals for yourself. Trying to exist on an extremely low-calorie diet or setting your weekly weight loss goal at an unattainable number often sets you up for failure.

To increase weight loss success, set achievable goals. Losing one or two pounds per week is a reasonable goal and can generally be achieved without extreme measures. Weigh yourself weekly; every week that you reach your goal, acknowledge your success. This will perpetuate positive thinking. Before long, you'll find that your motivation and energy have increased, and the pounds are coming off.

    Happy or Unhappy?

When you're at the top of your game, it can seem easy to make great food choices and to stay on plan. But sometimes (and this happens to the best of us) that one thing shows up in front of us and we think, "Boy, would that make me happy," Maybe for you it's a piece of pizza. Or maybe a decadent dessert. Or even a margarita or a six pack of beer. What ever your vice is, when faced with it, it's pretty hard to think of anything else but just how great it would be to have it,right? Well here's something you can do when that happens...

Instead of thinking how happy that food or drink item will make you, think on it a little more and realize that, actually, that item will make you feel the exact opposite; that piece of pizza or cake, or beer will make you essentially unhappy.

It's true. Don't confuse instant gratification with happiness. Sure, most of us like to enjoy good food and drink, but isn't all the indulging what made you, in the end, stand in front of the mirror and feel crushed? Or scream on the inside when someone made a rude comment? Or feel invisible, like no one even cared you existed?

So the next time you come face to face with something you really want to binge on, remember this tactic and quickly change your perspective from"mmmm...I want that because it will make me happy" to "no way...I'm not falling for that again...I DON'T want that because it will really make me unhappy."

    Then just walk away.

    Commitment!

What is commitment? It can be defined as “the act of pledging or engaging oneself, a pledge or promise, and involvement.

Today, we begin a six week journey to which we have pledged or committed or promised to follow. Let’s examine that in more detail.

Sometimes, commitment can be confused with interest. I, for one, have often said I am committed to something but as time passed, it appeared I was more interested than committed. What is the difference?

What is the difference between being interested in losing weight and that of being committed to losing weight?

People who are interested in losing weight

*Stick with it until something better comes along
*Take action only if they "feel like" doing it
*Need to see results in order to stay motivated
*Blame people or circumstances for thier struggles
*Easily give up when they face challenges

People who are committed to losing weight

*Stick with their plans no matter what
*Take action whether they feel like doing it or not
*Assume that if they stay motivated, results will follow
*Take responsibility for their own actions
*Keep going in spite of challenges and setbacks

I choose to be committed; what is your choice?

Welcome aboard Flight 100% bound non-stop to our destination of Challenge Goal!
Our estimated date of arrival is September 13th.

For the duration of our flight make sure no one and nothing
(i.e. rogue jars of Peanut Butter)
try and sabotage this flight and your success.

    We’re expecting smooth sailing,
but should we experience any turbulence
(again, rogue PB jars or nay-sayers of NS),
please remain 100% in your seats with your seatbelts tightly fastened.

    Instead of Frequent Flier Miles,
    we’re offering better health,
    more self-confidence,
    and less baggage!!

    Portion Distortion

The natural inclination when we're enjoying something edible is to just keep eating it.
Many times, even far past the point of being full, we just keep eating. Why? Well, it tastes good, right? And because it tastes good, we just keep going. And we just keep going until it’s gone.

That’s the problem with over-sized portions—we eat them till they’re gone!

Nowadays, it’s almost impossible to eat out somewhere and be served a reasonable amount of food. It’s nice to get your money’s worth, when did super-sizing everything become the norm?

Wouldn’t a little less food for a little less money be a better way to go?

And let’s admit it—we also do it at home. Super-sized bags of chips, enormous boxes of cereal, huge gallons of ice cream…we’re only setting ourselves up for temptation…and often, failure.

The bottom line is this: You have to learn where to cut it off.

Portion control is one of THE best ways to control your weight for the long haul.

Remember, the primary goal of eating should be to nourish your body. It’s okay to enjoy what you’re eating, but that doesn’t mean you should go overboard, or eat everything that’s in front of you.

Work on that this week. Watch your portions and STOP when you’re full.

And if you’re someone who’s thinking to yourself, “I really have no self-control when it comes to portions. I just love food too much. It’s not even worth trying to make a change.”

    Think again.

    It IS worth it.

    Because YOU are.

Thanks, Roger. Great job outlining this.

My first choice is #5 Losing on a Jet Plane (always did love Peter, Paul, and Mary)

And, 2nd choice is #4 Cruisin' Thru Summer.

I still, even after 2 attempts, have not heard back from Ticker Factory about the tickers. Cannot create a new one and/or update existing ones. :(

    Hi All
Thank You for the Feedback, and the suggested changes. I am not that creative so what I did while I could still read the forums was go back and make copies of the challenges from 2010 to 2015 and I am using that as a resource to save time. :)

Thus a New name or twist where Most of an older one can be recycled is good too.

    Cheers
