Running alone in the early morning?

I did week 1, day 1 outside at about 5:30am, and sunrise isn't technically until about 5:45 where I live (although at 5:30 it's technically past dawn and not completely dark out). As the days get shorter though, I am a bit concerned about my safety. I really want to keep running in the morning, as it gives me energy throughout the day, and it's too hot in the evening. I really hate running on treadmills. I do plan on always bringing my phone, my ID, transit card, and cash, and run in a well-lit area (where I saw plenty of other runners on Monday).
In other words, I feel like this is the only workable option for me. Please give me some encouragement that you think it's safe to do this. I am so overly-cautious sometimes and it can really put a damper on things.

I would never dismiss anyone's concern for their own safety as being "overly-cautious". But since you are already taking steps to secure your own safety I think you are already ahead than most. I would say jog on main streets with side walks as an additional step this way there is bound to be more vehicles driving by. I also find it better to jog at the same time.0

I wonder if you might befriend one of those other runners you see in the mornings - maybe another female if that is easier? Someone to run with is best; if not, you might consider getting a can of mace to take, or take a self defense class. That combined with the sensible measures you already taking MIGHT be sufficient depending on the environment...YMMV0

I do the same as you. I'm out at 5:30 am in my neighborhood too. I always have my phone for safety, plus the C25K app is on there. I don't wear headphones because I want to be aware of everything going on. I feel safe in my neighborhood. Occassionally I see another runner or two, but it is usually just me. I find I do better when I work out first thing in the morning. My other motivation to do it that early is because it is dark and I am self concious about what I look like as I run. I am a hot mess. LOL. Another safety tip is to be sure someone knows your route. Have fun!0

I'm a morning runner/walker too and most of the time I'm the only one on the streets. I feel like I live in a fairly safe neighborhood so it doesn't really bother me. I definitely run with my phone though. Are you running in your own neighborhood? I feel like that if I ever felt like I was in danger I could go pound on a neighbor's door.0

Thanks for the encouragement everyone! I am not sure about the legality of mace here, and I just don't feel comfortable carrying that, so I will pass on that one. But I am running in my neighborhood, within sight of a busy road that has traffic at all hours, and I will be sure to let my roommates know my route. I don't think I will start venturing out before 5:30 because that seems just a bit too early. I even saw a cop this morning, which made me feel safer.0
