Hey T1's,

How much insulin do you take in a day? I’m on a pump and basal about 25 units and bolus about 15 units for an average of 40 units a day.

Just curious to see what other people are taking.

My average changes based on the day (weekends are higher). Generally about 31 during the week and 45 on the weekends.

    Great question!

In the last month my daily lowest was 30 units (yay!) and highest was 63 units (boo). I usually consider it an ok day if I keep it 45 or under, and a great day if I'm 38 or under.

    I usually use around 40.
  • My basal is about 25, I have 3 different patterns on my pump that I use, and around 25 for bolus. I just joined myfitnesspal and I am hoping that by counting calories, I will eat less carbs and thus use less insulin.

My 31 day average is 28.77 units/day. I try to keep it 30 units or less... I figure, the less insulin I'm using, the more likely I am to lose weight! Also, I started using a continuous glucose monitor and that has made a HUGE difference in my ability to control my sugar and fine tune my basal rates :)
  • Cool! This is the only place I've heard really great things about the CGM, so I want to give it a try :).
Lately, I've been keeping my average to about 40 units a day. This is from 60-70 units a day from the past couple of years (where I was giving almost 15 units for just a dinner meal!! eek!). I gained 15 pounds, and I think it definitely comes from the insulin as I have been eating as healthily as possible and working out. Although I am not exercising at the moment due to a cyst in my back, I hope that 40 units a day will aid in me shedding off some of the weight.

Hmm...33 of basal (Levemir) and anywhere from maybe 10-15 for bolus (depending on what I eat, of course).

Pre weight loss I was at about 40 basal and 15+ bolus..

25 units of Humalog Basal. Approximately 37 units a day for bolus.

I'm 5 foot 11 and at 190 lbs. Hope to lost 10-15 more pounds.

I want to get a CGM, but my doctor said my sugars are too good, so he doesn't want to fight with the insurance company over it. It's the dumbest thing I've ever heard--you take such good care of yourself, we're going to punish you and make it harder for you than it has to be. If only you'd let your sugar get really out of control and ended up in the hospital--then we'd help you.

I was just looking on my pump to scroll through my daily totals so I could respond to this, and I discovered that it has an averaging function on it. I never noticed that before, so thanks to all of you for helping me learn something new today! :)

I did an average of the last 21 days, and here's what it says:

    Total Insulin/Day = 27.175
    Basal Insulin/Day = 15.9

I've got several basal rates set up throughout the day. It's amazing how different the body reacts at different times of the day.

My insulin:carb ratio is generally around 1:15

I'm on the pump and use close to 25 units for basal and 20 units for boluses. I used to use around 65-70 total units a day though so this is a huge improvement for me!

My total daily basal rate is 33.0 units per day, and I bolus anywhere from 2-10 units per day. My usual overall daily total is between 35-40 units.

OOPS-- Accidentally posted this twice on the forum. My daily basal rate is currently at 33 units, with anywhere from 2 to 10 units of bolus each day. Daily totals run between 35-40 units/day. Hope this is helpful.

so far i take an average of 45 units a day
  • My daily total averages 22 units on the pump.....1/2 is basal and the other 1/2 is bolus.....I've been on the pump for +12 years and a Type 1 diabetic for 42 years....does this help?
  • One thing that works great for me is to keep my carb intake per meal or snack less than 30 grams of carbo's,......I am an active person with horses and herding dogs....using myfitnesspal does help keep Blood Sugars and weight in check....and I can use the report function to give to my endocrinologist....along with BS & meal dosage logs....It's all good....

I take 22.2 units in basal and generally somewhere between 12 and 20 units a day with bolusing. A good average would be 40 units/day.
  • I'm always curious about this, too. I take 15 units of basal insulin and 15-30 units of bolus/correction insulin. My I:C ratio is 1u:5cb.

OMG, I feel like I am not even reading this right, I seem to take a TON if insulin compaired to everyone else here!

I take 30 units of basal insulin at 10am, and 60 units of basal insulin at 10pm.

Then I take 25-60 units three times a day with meals of bolus insulin with meals, PLUS an extra 10-20 units before bed, IF my blood sugar is NORMAL, and more if it needs correction. And, if I wake up and my blood sugar is normal, I take 12-15 units to keep it normal until breakfast time, or if it is high, I take anywhere from 25-40 units of corrective.

That means I am taking 90 units of basal and 150-240 units of basal per day.....

I have been diabetic for 24 years, type one, but I weight about 360lbs, I guess I am pretty resistant because of all the weight.....my ratio is 1:2

Edited to add: anyone else here take that much?
  • Insulin totally depends on your weight. When I was heavier (and eating more carbs), I took a lot more insulin. How many grams of carbs do you eat at each meal?

    If you are on shots:

Basal insulin is Lantus or Levemir (usually), normally taken once or twice a day.

Bolus insulin is Novolog or Humalog (usually) and is for meals, snacks, and corrections.

What kind of insulin do you take unknown_sister? Your insulin to carb ratio is high though mine is too, it is 1:4.

    I take Levemir and Humalog

I eat 50-100 carbs per meal, with dinner being the most carb filled.....

I'm no doctor, but 50-100 carbs per meal seems like quite a bit. Did the Dr's put you on that much?

My dietitian recommends 45-80 per meal, sometimes I go over, I tend to eat a lot of carb based foods.....I am Italian, and it seems everything revolves around pasta and breads....

Believe it or not, that is down from the amount of carbs I used to eat.....

I hope you continue to try to cut down your carbs and be active, and I encourage you all the way. I want to share something with you ( and everyone else) that happened to me. I used to be alot like you(from the sounds of it) I LOVED and I'll even say i was addicted to Breads & Pasta. I had the neurotic thinking that I could eat whatever i wanted- I would just take more insulin, and everything would be fine. Afterall, my dr used to have me on a sliding scale- so no biggie. Wrong. In March of 2011 I got a diabetic ulcer on the bottom of my foot ( I had become quite resistant to my insulin and my blood sugars were way too high for too long) In July of that year, it finally close shut- too bad there was a staph infection in there. In tunneled a pocket of infection to the side of my foot and the docotrs had to cut it open so it could drain. There was now a hole in the side of my foot, approximately 7 cm deep. They did a debrisment to cut the infection away, and put me on a wound vac, and the oral antibiotics werent working so I did IV antibiotics every 8 hours for two months. It was looking alot better and was starting to fill in. By September 2011, Suddenly I couldn't keep anything down and spiked a fever of about 103-104ish. Went from being a staph infection to a bone infection- another surgery I underwent. Again started me on IVs until thanksgiving. this went on with surgies after surgeries.Probably about one every 6-8 weeks. I was seeing doctors three times a week. (foot specialist, reg dr and infectious disease) In Feb of this year- they sent me to try the hyperbariac oxygen treatments to try to promote some healing. Two weeks in- fever returned, another bad infection. With all the infections- kept my blood sugar pretty high and the infections weren't getting better because the BS were high. Now they sent me to a vascular surgeon and his team. Did another debrisment and gave it another month to heal.-about 3 weeks later it was either infected again or it never left, but anyway infection got worse while i was on the ivs. The decision was finally made to amputate below my knee on May 2nd 2012. Considering I'm not even thirty yet- I don't think I ever cried so much in my life as in that first week -- both of physical pain and emotional. I have a prosthetic now- and they make em great now, but I would not wish the last two years of my life on my worst enemy. I'm currently in the process of getting approved for an insulin pump, and following what my dietician has told me ( i was told to go 30-60 carbs a meal at most, and I've started being active again after a long healing process to try to take off some extra weight. What everyone needs to remember is it is never to late to start and continuing for improvement.

Totally forgot to say what i was taking...lol and my apologies for the book on the earlier post. Right now I take 50 units of lantus in the morning and 50 units before bed, and for my fast acting I take 4-6 units with each meal, depending if i eat the 30g of carbs or the 60g. This is way down from pre amputation- I feel much better now obviously and I am hoping that as I lose weight I can begin to decrease my insulin levels also :)

Great post! I am taking between 60-80 units per day but after reading this I am going to focus on lowering my carb intake. I'm sure this will help with my sugars and get me loosing weight again.

WOW~this group is taking LOTS of insulin! But everybody's needs are different so it's ok!

My basal is 17.275 units on a regular day without any extra activity. When I'm working out hard my basal rate is only 10.55 units per day. My bolus is anywhere from 10 or 11 units to 13 or 14 units. I've been pumping for almost 9 years.

My insulin need is very low because I'm very sensitive to it. I've always been like that. I've been a T1 since I was 2 years old.

I was so excited to find this group!

If you would like another diabetic friend on your list please add me.

    Thanks,
    Claire

I was diagnosed about 12 years ago. I average between 10 and 16 a day, depending on how intense of a work out day it is! the odd weekend I slip diet wise and go a bit higher, but I find the less insulin I'm taking, the better I feel and the easier it is to maintain/lose weight.

I average 30 units total. Before I lost all this weight and got fit I was taking 120 plus a day. Insane!
