An Encouraging Conversation About PCOS

Hi Everyone!

I was diagnosed with PCOS a few years ago and have been very sad about the possibility of infertility. I want to be a mother more than anything in the world and the possibility of not having a child scares me so bad. Anyway...I had to get a routine TB Skin Test for work and met a nurse practitioner who asked about my pre-existing conditions and current medications. When I told her that I had PCOS and was prescribed Metformin, she began to tell me about her daughter who was also diagnosed with PCOS. She said that her daughter had trouble getting pregnant at first and was later diagnosed and prescribed Metformin. Soon after she got pregnant with her first child. She is now pregnant with child #5. I was elated to hear this.

I've only been on Metformin for about a month and I've already noticed that my menstrual cycle is now regular, the hair on my face has thinned and decreased, and the hair on my head has thickened. I work out a lot now, stopped eating meat, and I'm determined to get healthy by any means necessary. I hope that this leads to me having a baby in the near future. I'm in a loving relationship with the man of my dreams. We are waiting until we finish our PhD's (Spring 2014!!!) before we get married and start a family. It is my goal to be as healthy as possible before that point.

I thought that I would share this encouraging news with everyone because I have noticed that most of the time I hear negativity about this disorder. I hope that hearing about a woman having 5 children with PCOS will also make you feel hopeful about the future.

Have a good evening everyone.

  • That is very uplifting! Thank you for sharing.

I, too, am wanting to become a biological mom. I have two fantastic step-kids that live with us full time but I still have that longing, you know?

Keep us up to date with your progress!

I have 2 amazing girls ages 5 and 2, I was 35 when I got my first one so I had extra complications due to age but I know first hand it's possible.
  • I was first diagnosed with PCOS in 2003, after trying to conceive a second child for 6 years. My ob put me on metformin, and I was pregnant the next month. Since that pregnancy, I have also conceived two more times. It is possible!

I was just diagnosed week before last. My doc put me back on birth control. Being 37 and overweight and dealing with degenerative disk disease in my lower back and osteoarthritis in my hips I opted to not deal with fertility treatments. If I were to get pregnant at this weight the pain would be even more unbearable than it is now. My age puts me at risk for other issues.

I've come to terms with the fact I may never have kids of my own. I'm ok with that. I have been telling people I wanted to adopt since I was like 9 years old. No joke!

Today I went to see my primary care doctor, she put me on metformin since my weight has been such a struggle. I have been working with a dietitian for months now. Hopefully this medication will help.

I know plenty of people with PCOS who have been able to conceive. Some had problems, some didn't. Anything is possible - you have your whole life ahead of you!

This is so very true my Mom had pcos also and she had me and my brother we were born a year and 2 days apart. I would suggest if you want more than one child you should try to get pregnant as soon as possible healthy wise because I have a friend here that I think has P.C.O.S. but Drs. around here find that that is just an excuse for all the mood swings and everything else that is associated with pcos! Thank God my Dr. is not like that she believes whole heartedly that pcos is a real condition.

Back to my friend she had her first child at 21 and then took her 9 years to concieve again and she had her second child at 30 she is now 31 and became pregnant in February of this year after having her last child this past October! Hope this does help some of you that are wanting big families!
