New road bike wheel recommendations?

Ok, so last night I managed to snap a spoke on my rear wheel (& my wheels are getting a little long in the tooth anyway), so I'm after some recommendations for a replacement set...

I'm looking for a robust set of wheels which will take a fair pounding, but also a set which isn't too heavy...

So far I am looking at a set of Mavic Aksium's

What else can you recommend?

So many good wheels out there. The Shimano wheels are solid. Nothing fancy, but really good wheels. HED Ardennes if you're looking pricey. Then there are all the smaller shops like Boyd or Williams Cycling.

Been looking around myself- as I'll be needing some winter wheels son enough

    Came up with these...

    Fulcrum Racing 5 - 2012 versions...

though personally, I'm seriously considering some hope Hoops...

    http://www.merlincycles.com/bike-shop/wheels/road-wheels/factory-road-wheels/hope-hoops-pro3-rs-mono-open-pro.html

mainly as they're "normal" rims and spokes, so if anything goes wrong, I can just get some more mavic openpro rims and re-lace the damned things myself (joys of working in a old-school bike shop in my teens...)

What are the existing wheels - it'd be a shame to recommend something that's a "downgrade" - after all, one of the biggest changes to the "feel" of a bike and how it'll perform is down to the wheels... vaguely remember the Boardman's being fitted with Ritchey Finishing kit...

    go custom.
    look at
    Psimet.com
    wheelbuilder.com
    zencyclery.com

    I went with these:
    http://www.zencyclery.com/road-2/siddartha-custom-wheelset.

They are stiff, light, and take a beating.

I have a 08 trek madone 4.7. the stock wheels are Bontrager race wheels. When I switched, the power transfer was night and day. And they were easier to climb with. and coast longer than before. I have about 2000 miles on them so far.

If you are considering going custom, you'd be better considering a wheelbuilder in the UK I reckon Clive, Nothing against the ones mentioned, other than they're at the wrong side of an ocean if anything isn't perfect!

Strada Wheels are pretty well respected (www.stradawheels.co.uk) - Ive ridden one of their powertap hub builds and it felt fantastic (and the fact that it's owner felt confident to loan it to me when I was still 25stone speaks volumes about the toughness of it!)

Alternatively, and close enough to home to "call in and see the builder" would be Spa Cycles in Harrogate - or - just about close enough (especially if you were on another course in Leeds  would be getting Gary at Kendell Cycles in Castleford to build you something) I've personally used both of these companies - indeed I've had wheels built by Gary off and on for over 25 years...

    Hi,

When I bust my rear wheel last year, i plumped for a Mavic 321 rim and went for a more cautious 36 spoke hub instead of the standard 32 spoke you usually get. The wheel is really robust and the cost (sub £100) compared to a forty spoke hub is quite reasonable. When ringing round last year I spoke to someone in York when I followed the cycle to work scheme website, but that was too far for me and therefore I got my local bike shop to build the wheel.

    Hope this helps,

    Kato (Carl)

Yup; Ritchey wheels are the factory standard wheels.

Custom made - Velocity wheels. I can hop curbs with mine and i love them.

They were $499 for the set. They actually sold me these over the $1300 mavics I was looking at.

 Not sure that'll help fix a wheel that's pretzled by transatlantic air-freight handling tbh... There's plenty of highly skilled custom wheelbuilders on this side of the pond as well - including a couple I mentioned ^^^ up there...
