Too old for new music???

My darling dog has just started barking so I will make this short and sweet.
I love hearing new music to see what young artists are doing. Or attending the current Philadelphia Fringe Festival, where new plays, music, performance art, movies are performed / shown for free or at low rates.
I have a hard time finding anyone interested in doing anything new. Plus...most people at these events are 30 or younger. Where do we go once we hit 40? WE aren't ALL at Bingo are we? No disrespect to Bingo...
What happens to us as we age that many of us stop being interested in new things? I find these arts very stimulating and since I have cognitive loss from all my medications, I need stimulation. I also eat less when I am out of the house more.
I may start a Meet-Up in my area for older folks to do these things, but I'd like to know what others feel about exploring new territory.

I have the same problem here. I too love learning new things. I love plays, art and if I Could I probably would become a professional student. Go for it. Sounds like a great idea. I especially love ballet and opera. Unfortunately most of my life has been spent around people that don't enjoy these things except some of my relatives and they live pretty far from me. Money is probably the main issue at this time I don't do more. I substituted sports a lot as most of my friends were into competition. I guess that's why now I read a lot and I'm on the internet too.

I love all types of music, very veyr much!!
I do not always enjoy concerts or festivals which are predominately young, so although i might love that band,
i might not show up to that band's concert. Sometimes i much enjoy the company of wall-to-wall young ppl, other times, i feel older by comparison. Guess it depends on my mood that day.
And while most festivals are free or low prices,
i have never ever quite reconciled todays concert ticket prices.:noway: Tickets were only about $20 or so when i was young, and even us teens could make $20 in a day. Some of today's concerts cost hundreds of dollars.....
As a young person, i went to 100s of concerts, tons of 'em. :smokin: :drinker:
Wow, when i was young, EVERYONE could go to concerts, teens who worked at McDonalds,
and teens who had rich parents. I don't recall seeing huge amounts of older ppl at concerts i attended as a young person, either,
i do not think this is anything new.
I do think, the music we first learned to love,
will always moves us inside, like a form of musical imprinting. I grew up with soul music,
and to this day,
nothing moves me inside as much as soul. But i like NEW soul music, too.
I am currently on very tight budget,
but i MUCH ENJOY allllllllllll kinds of music
and always have.
I use free "Playlist.com"
http://www.playlist.com
to create a music list of my favorite songs (drawback, occasionally a song you listed will later have a broken link)
as well as free "Pandora Music STation"
http://www.pandora.com
and i have several of my very own personal stations.
That is VERY COOL, very interactive radio.........after you pick types of music, or songs, or artists that YOU like,
then, as songs play,
you click you "like" certain songs,
and the radio plays MORE of THAT type of song..............very fun, imo.
My musical tastes are exxxxxxxxxxxxtremely diverse.
Although my lifelong favorite is SOUL:drinker: ,
i also love blues, jazz, rap, YES, I LOVE RAP, and always always have, long before it become mainstream white-teenager staple, i loved rap back when no one else even knew what it was called,
i love hip hop, disco, Ha ha, yeah, i am not too proud to say, nothing is better for workouts than disco,
i love classical,
latino,
foreign music of all types,
new age stuff,
pop,
symphony,
dance,
swing big band,
reggae,
I have been to tons of reggae cocerts,
even for new reggae bands,
playing new songs,
and find a very mixed age group there,
old and young both together,
but,
if i go to a rap concert,
not so much...it's mostly young ppl.
and even learned to love country music, too. I am not a hickphobe,(that prevents some ppl from even listening to it)
and after exposing my ears to it often enough,
i discovered,
jsut like ANY OTHER GENRE,
i found there are indeed, country music songs i much love!!!!!!!!
the ONLY genre,
that is VERY hard for me
to find songs i actually truly like,
is heavy metal. I don't get that stuff, i don't, it sounds like angry white boys:explode: whining and feeling sorry for themselves and often very hostile:explode: stuff,
and i can't dance to it...it has no rhythm, no soul in it.........One time a young pal of mine, at my request, to help me locate ONE (1) heavy metal song i could like,
well, he sent me heavy metal song after heavy metal song, til finally, i DID agree, one of those songs WAS actually pretty good, but, overall, i can't get into heavy metal.
I LOVE MUSIC
very very much,
so so much,
and feel music is almost like a drug, when i crank it up loud it changes my very mood.

OHhhh, sorry,
i misunderstood,
headline and all,
and
i thought the OP was remarking about older ppl who never develop a taste for NEW MUSIC.
 :blushing:
NOW, i realize,
the OP wants to locate places where her age groups hangs out? Is that right? OHhhhhhh
There are always certain pubs and restaurants with older crowd, every town had these.
THERE ARE PLACES CHOCKFUL OF US OLDER PPL. Last weekend, i went to festival, called
"Taste Of ___(my town's name)__" which was a festival,
with several different types of bands,
an acre of art items and statues for sale,
wine-tasting tents,
gardens to die for all around,
tons of tents with various things going on in them,
and there were about 1000 of ages 50 to 70 having great time!!!!!! and my town is not a big city, either. Big cities have TONS of stuff you can find older ppl at.
Yes, most plays and theater tends to be older ppl, too.
Anything with art is usually at least a mixed age group crowd, and some art things are almost purely older ppl.
Join your local museum, almost all older ppl.
Most wine-tasting festivals are older-ish ppl.
Certain bands attract older ppl.
If there is a local band you love, which does attract an older group, then sign up for their emails, to 'follow' that band from pub to pub.
Ballroom dance classes tend to be mostly older ppl, and no, one does not always need a partner to take the class.
Ask other locals in your age group, where they have been to lately, that has your age group having fun. Are you new to the town you live in now? Is it a small town,
or a big town?0 -
I LOVE your meetup group idea, too,
great idea!!!
Great way to make friends, and get a group together to do stuff together. GO FOR IT!!!!!!!
Also, if you are interested in finding ppl to date,:drinker:
consider joining one of those online dating sites.:flowerforyou: They even have sites specificallyfor older ppl only, easy to find if you google them. Even the big dating sites, like Match.com,, etc,
sort out the ppl by age group. I have some pals who found love that way! Not everyone you meet at a play will actually BE interested in dating,
but
those on the online dating sites, actually DO want someone to date. (IF that is even an interest for you, not sure)
Volunteering in areas YOU much enjoy and care about
whether it is politics, or religion or atheism, or animal rescue, or helping the blind, or pitching in for kids at risk, whatever cause YOU truly really care about,
volunteering can also be a great way to find like-minded types who share YOUR interest, and is extremely satisfying in so so many ways, and a great way to make new friends.
Also consider taking a class geared for older ppl,
like a computer class or art class or exercise class or whatever, which is specifically FOR older ppl.
   You are NOT alone,
we
are
a
large %
of the population!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!0 -
and when you DO meet kindred spirits,
INVITE THEM OVER for dinner, cookout, picnic, card game, bonfire, whatever you like.
.......or invite them to meet you somewhere next weekend....a concert, a play, a pub that has a great band, golfing, whatever YOU like to do.
...get their phone numbers.
be outgoing,
ask for their number, or give them your number,
or better yet
set up a REmeet somewhere that very week.
otherwise, you can go out, meet some great ppl,
and go home, and have not built up any network for next time you want to socialize. GOOD LUCK!!!!0 -

I agree...go for it. Find others that enjoy things you do and make your own group. I have done that and I get to go to museums, speakers forums and exhibits. It is hard to do and sometimes I just go on my own. Also, reading is my great joy and I still occasionally take a class. There us no age limit when it comes to learning new things you just have to find others to share the experiences. Sometimes it isn't our mate or friends in our social circle. Wish you two lived closer , we could go on an adventure.0
-
It does sound as a few of us could go on an adventure if we all lived closer.
Living in a big city there are big prices on may things so going out can be expensive. But so many of you shared that you are interested in new things, and BlueJean loves all kinds of music, so I bet there are people hanging out here who are also interested in new music.
As for big expensive concerts, I go to hear Bruce Springsteen. But there are many small venues for newer artists who are fabulous that I want to catch. so I'll do a meet-up OR go alone. I have always been independent and having a husband who works 3-12 midnight, he is often unavailable or not as interested in music. He does like dance and theater and even ballet!!!
The Internet is a great way to hear music. I love YouTube for new and old music.0 -
Agreed, we are never too old for new music! I took my 18 y.o. daughter to an Ozzy concert in Minneapolis 20 years ago, and at age 47, I'm sure I was the oldest person there. Still, as this thread proves, there are a lot of us loving music of all kinds. And BlueJean, "Music Is The Doctor".... remember that one?0
-
Thanks everyone! I found enough support here to move forward.
To khaapal, extra points for going to an Ozzy concert!!!!0 -
LOVE ALL THE REPLIES, LOVE THIS WHOLE THREAD!!!Agreed, we are never too old for new music! has seen the Doobies twice,
and after their break-up, I saw the 'other' leftover Doobies once,
{as well as Michael McDonald gone solo, in a very small venue on Cape Cod
in that tent, where you are never more than about 100? feet away from singer, awesome!}
LOVED the Doobies.
Here is good song that i play every time i am trying to get going exercising, some oldies but goodies:
copy and paste this song into browser:
"KEEP ON MOVIN"
http://youtu.be/1iQl46-zIcM <=========CRANK IT UP, SING ALONG OUT LOUD!!:drinker:
Other songs that get ME moving:
"Ain't No Stopping Us Now"
http://youtu.be/dmpjxKNMV0I <========== AN OLDIE BUT GOODIE......If you've ever been through a health problem, or any big problem holding you down, then you can relate to the lyrics..........."there's been so many things holding us down....I know we've got a long long way to go, yeah............we're putting ourselves together......."
.... CAN YOU SIT STILL TO THAT???? I CAN'T...NOPE.....
i'm up, I'M UP NOW... That "doctor" is working for me!!
crank this song, ppl, for your next work out.
More good work out songs from the oldies, imo:
"Take Your Time, do it right" (saw them in concert, too)
http://youtu.be/hqXaJqqp2SI
can you even TRY to sit down when you turn that one UP?
This one has just the right beat to jog to, imo.
"You Got The Music In You"
http://youtu.be/cPAEFnVZVOs <=========== I used to jog to THAT song so so much, cuz i never got around to getting all my music transferred to CD, so it was only CD i owned with right beat for a while,
i'd get so into keeping the beat, i'd actually trip if the CD skipped........
LOL, lucky for me, no young kids belong to this group, they'd all fall over laffin, right?

but, sorry, THAT is what i grew up loving, THAT kinda stuff. The music you FIRST love, causes a musical imprinting, that can't ever be undone.
^SO THOSE SONGS ABOVE ARE PROBABLY MY FAVORITES FOR WORK OUTS, IMO............really get you going, imo.
You CAN learn to love NEW STUFF too, but, nothing moves you quite the way your first "doctor"(music ) can....
Newer Work out music from more recent stuff:
"Stronger!!!" {great for workouts, imo)
http://youtu.be/PsO6ZnUZI0g
Or "GO GET IT" great song for us older ppl,, "it's your time, go get it"
but, i can't find the song on youtube , but here is some baby dancing:laugh: to snippet of "GO GET IT"
http://youtu.be/b-VnFr6_474
"Get the party started"
http://youtu.be/mW1dbiD_zDk
(great tune to turn up loud when you are getting dressed for a party, lol, but also great for speed walking at a super fast pace, imo)
or
http://youtu.be/j2pPJywRGTk <
geez, guess that one "Everybody Dance Now" (which my kids have always said they WILL play at my funeral)    IS kinda old song :blushing: anyway.....still, i do believe they really WILL play that song, and that's fine by me, ha ha, it'll be a fun funeral, then...
back to newer songs for workouts,
for your arm workout
or kickboxing moves,
"i'm gonna knock u out" ha ha!!
http://youtu.be/vimZj8HW0Kg
"Get it Right" (a lil slower.................)
http://youtu.be/Y2HV7T1xSeo
"Crazy in Love"
http://youtu.be/KeY1cXY_xn0
Reggae work out songs, great for A LIL SLOWER WORKOUT STUFF.............
"Get up STand Up"
http://youtu.be/JuMlHdxiIZ8
"Three Little Birds"
http://youtu.be/zaGUr6wzyT8
Country Music workout songs, just a lil slower stuff:
"Ready To Run"
http://youtu.be/3a9mx1IVZzU
Love this country song, "I hope you Dance"
just LOVE it, but, imo, it's only good for walking outdoors, not working out.
http://youtu.be/RV-Z1YwaOiw
This country song is a lil better for working out, or jogging, as are all the country line-dancing songs, imo.
"Good Time"
http://youtu.be/PSROm-vgVRk
New Age workout songs:
"I'll always Love You/theme song dying young"
http://youtu.be/GPlJ80htv2g
good for stretching anyway. This song has special meaning for me, so it might not move anyone else but me, but what a finish on that song, eh? STarts out slow, but builds. I've seen Kenny G a few times, and even shook his hand!!
geez, i could go no forever, I LOVE MUSIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ALL KINDS!!!!
WHAT SONGS DO YOU:flowerforyou: (ANYONE) HERE:flowerforyou: LIKE TO PLAY TO GET YOURSELF GOING????????????:flowerforyou:0 -
btw,
who here got disgusted
when all our 8tracks had to be replaced
and then,
all our music on vinyl had to be replaced.......
and then
all our music on cassettes had to be replaced......
and now,
all our CDs are becoming dinosaurs in favor of mp3 format.................
with each change,
i lost more music,
unable to afford buying the latest format......
wonder what's next............
SOON AS I GET A NICE COLLECTION OF MP3s THAT I LIKE,
YOU KNOW
they will come up with something else, and mp3 players will become hard to find........you KNOW it's coming.
