Maybe nobody ese has read this book.. I read it last week. It was lovely. I really enjoyed the story. I liked that it was a grand love story with out all the love crap,0

In a nutshell, hopefully to start discussions: it's a magical magic-book. My cynical mind desperately wants to believe in magic, and Ms. Morgenstern almost made me believe in it. Loved the story, loved the roles of Widget and Mr. Thiessen (both storytellers in their own right), loved howt all the threads get weaved together at the end, but most of all loved, LOVED Ms. Morgenstern's vivid descriptions. I guess I'm a very visual person and for me, the circus, the gowns, the clock, the ice garden, Mme Padva's outfits etc. leap off the page. I could make a movie of this book, in fact I think it begs to be turned into a movie, and in the right person's hands it could be a visual feast at the least. I'm planning midnight dinners :happy:0

I agree the imagery in this book is AWESOME! I would love to see it made into a movie. The love story was beautiful without being sappy. While reading at one point ( when he decided to run away) I started thinking of Bailey as a distant relative of Barnum & Bailey which made it so real to me.0

Just now getting to start this one. Hope to get it finished this weekend which works out I guess. I am not able to read the next one because I can't get it through library.0

I'm still waiting for the library to have the book returned, but I sure do not mind spoilers at all. I actually appreciate books more if I know what is going to happen, then I can observe it all unfold. From the posts so far it looks like a good book.0

I really enjoyed this book. So glad I suggested it and that it got chosen! It's not the sort of thing I'd usually pick up without a 'book club' type reason but there was something about it that intrigued me...
I didn't find it as readily easy to accept magic as I did to accept time travel in Time Traveller's Wife (I'm usually not great with fantasy things) but having it set in late 1800's, early 1900's made it slightly easier, not sure why! Total agree that it begs to be made into a visually luscious film.
I liked the mystery of never fully understanding what was going on with Alexander, but I felt the gnawing mania experienced by Tara Burgess could have been explored a lot more. I really liked the occasional references to the game being a chess board. It fitted visually with the black and white theme and how many of the other characters were merely pawns in the game- Isobel, Feiderick, Chandresh.
Speaking of which- for those of you who've read the book, what did you make of Marco's manipulation of Chandresh? I didn't feel negatively toward Marco at all, but what he did to Chandresh was really very cruel, and he showed no apparent remorse for it. Would be interested to hear other people's views!0 -

I have not finished the book yet, but so far I agree with everyone, this is a fantastic book. Re your comment. I see them all being pawns, every last one. Perhaps that is how life is when all are intermeshed and dependent upon one another. It is much like life itself. The black and white theme fits will with the black and white sides the characters have, as do we, some more black than white. Still, shades of grey were allowed. I can't wait to finish it tomorrow.0 -
Finished the book and sad to leave the circus. It didn't end the way I expected it to end, but the circus goes on. One theme I especially appreciated was that of life's timing. Each moment is a miracle encompassing the potential of the universe limited only by the specific interdependence of factors coming into juxtaposition at exact time. Another moment passes and that exact potential is lost, while others are realized. Each one of us came about and became who we are through these momentous interactions.0

LOVED this book. It was a great blend of imagery, storyline, mystery, and excitement. I am leaving this one on my "to be read again" bookshelf.0

Me too!!! I actually started re-reading it already, and it just gets better on second read0 -
Finished it this week. I really liked it. It was one of those that I would not have read if not for this book club. Reading some of the previous comments had almost made me dread starting the book. Someone mentioned all of the details and descriptions. That was a turn off for me. But once I started it I found that I loved having all of the descriptions. I also agree with whoever said that should make a movie out of it but only if they could do it properly and not ruin it. Nice little love story but not sappy and loved the magic.
I skipped the 2nd book because I couldn't get it in time. Starting Lucky One now and hopefully will have done by next Friday.0 -
So I read the book, FINALLY, and I must say it was a great story. Loved all the descriptions and was totally a fan of Poppet and Widget. They were so cute but determined. And I really like how Bailey was tied into the story. What I would have really loved was if there was a book on more of the backgrounds of the different players, to actually hear the stories of Mdm. Pavar (?) or the sisters. I would have loved a book just on Alexander since he seems to be such an ancient person, or so they describe in the book. And I want a story about how Poppet and Widget after the circus is signed over to them. I would definitely be a reveur.0
