Pregnancy Craving Satisfied! LOL

So, yesterday I was craving crusty bread and different kinds of cheese....... stopped off at a little deli on my way home, got a french baguette and the lady behind the deli counter was kind enough to humor me and slice her way through no less than 4 different kinds of cheese, at only a couple slices per "kind"..... can't begin to tell you how yummy it was! She even gave me a couple packets of spicy mustard to eat with it..... Hubby made beer-can-chicken this week, so I sliced the bread into thin rounds, piled chicken and cheese on top, and baked it til it was melty, ate it with tomato soup for lunch. Best lunch ever! LOL

Another of my favorites (yes, I know it's horrible... almost no nutritious value, and WAY too much salt, but I still LOVE it for some reason! ) is chicken cup-o-noodles, with 2 slices of reduced fat kraft singles melted/stirred into it..... YUM.

What are your current cravings?

Lately I've been eating a lot of avocado and bananas. Anything carby is appealing, as is spicy food (Mexican, chili, Indian). Last night I wanted something warm, sweet and mushy, so I had some instant maple brown sugar oatmeal.

I really wanted to bring a PBJ for lunch today, but I was good and made a salad instead....

I could probably have a non-fat, no whip Starbucks salted caramel mocha every day, but they're really high cal and high sugar (and $$$), so I stick to 1 a week. Some times two.

I really want a Dunkin' Donuts pumpkin spice latte right now. They have them in decaf. I had an iced pumpkin spice coffee yesterday, and it was awesome, but it's chilly in here!

I had my decaf pumpkin iced coffee (it was cold inside, but once I got outside, it was really hot, almost 90 and humid out) yesterday but could only get halfway through it before I started feeling yucky.

The thought of a fresh, hot, crusty baguette with cheese sounds good. Especially if it's Brie. Though we're all not supposed to eat that... however I think the stuff sold commercially here in the US is generally pasteurized, so it might be ok - I'll have to ask my doctor and make sure I read labels. http://www.babycenter.com/404_is-it-safe-to-eat-soft-cheese-during-pregnancy_3175.bc

Home made cocoa with marshmallows is one of my fave evening snacks, especially when the weather cools. Unfortunately I've discovered it can give me wicked heartburn when trying to sleep, so I haven't been having it as often as I'd like.

Soft cheese was one of the first things I asked my doctor about when I got pregnant! My doctor said if I'm buying it in a store and not at a farm market, it's probably fine. I make sure I check the label to see if it is made from pasteurized milk, and if it is, I go for it. I'm leery when it comes to restaurants, though, because I don't know what brands of soft cheese they use.

The "rules" regarding foods and some other pregnancy restrictions are different depending on where you live (ie. North America vs. UK), and have changed a lot over the years. As my friend's mom put it when she heard of one of the new "rules", they didn't have this many restrictions when her generation was pregnant, and we all came out healthy!

Yeah, I generally stay away from it at restaurants, especially because around here they all seem to pride themselves on being "local" and organic and stuff, which sometimes means raw milk products. (Not knocking it, but my point is just that you never know.)

Not that I do it often, but I typically pick up President Brie at Costco because it is so much cheaper than at the supermarket (and it's really good). I think last time I was pregnant, I checked it out, and it was pasteurized. I'll double-check before I buy it again.

Funny, but the deli meat thing was such a pain in the butt last time. Then between pregnancies, I rarely wanted a sub or sandwich with deli meat. Now I want to head to Jersey Mike's or Jimmy Johns :frown: I guess you always want what you can't have!

ETA that I don't remember deli meat being a restriction last time. I will have to ask this time. My dad (a pediatrician) once told me that a lot of doctors think the risk of infection isn't even worth considering but that if it didn't bother me to avoid it, then avoid it. Some friends' OBs say stay away, but some don't. I'm curious as to what mine says, but I'll probably abstain.

I was also told no deli meat UNLESS it was nuked in the microwave/grilled first. So I allow myself Subway cravings but make sure they toast it to meet that "nuked" requirement. I've also buy precooked, presliced spiral ham instead of deli meat so when I nuke it for breakfast sandwiches or lunch/dinner I'm good there too.

Yep, I've been doing the "nuked", grilled, pan-seared, you-name-it route.... tried the double-toasting of a turkey sub at subway the other day and it was soooo good, almost satisfied my craving (REALLY wanted a cold-cut-trio, but dont' think t hat would heat very well!) I'm a sandwich fanatic, so it's been tough! Luckily there's egg salad, chicken salad, tuna salad (limited of course) and sliced turkey breast non-deli meat (just baked), so I'm coping!

Pumpkin-related stuff sounds sooo good, I'm going to have to make something like muffins, pumpkin bread, or the like! Heck, maybe even pumpkin pie, it IS october, right?

I've heard the same thing about soft cheeses - as long as it's made with pasteurized milk, it's considered safe, doc said that's just fine, but to be cautious at mexican and greek restaurants with the "fresh" cheeses like feta, and the cotija (I think that's what it's called?) cheeses that they often use on top of beans, tacos, etc..... so many restrictions, but thank goodness there are ways around it!

My latest craving..... a huge bowl of fresh-sliced strawberries and purple seedless grapes.... yummmm. LOL

I made pumpkin fluff (http://allrecipes.com/recipe/pumpkin-fluff-dip/) two nights ago and had some as a dessert. I felt so nasty afterwards (there's a reason I don't generally eat Cool Whip), and I tried a small spoonful last night for dessert and could barely swallow it. Suddenly I am turned off from pumpkin altogether :frown:

Egg salad was one of the things I was thinking I need to make. I love it, and it's a good way to get some healthy calories in (assuming you don't use too much mayo) while agreeing with (and settling) my stomach.

But now I want chicken salad from Jersey Mike's. I might have to put aside my lunch and get that! I love their chicken salad, and the way they make their subs reminds me of home (I'm from NJ, near where the original Jersey Mike's was).

RBX: I've never heard of Jersey Mikes or Jimmy John's - how do they make them that's different from the norm? Gotta love that "taste of home"!!

Mmmm, pumpkin fluff - Thanks for the recipe! Hmm, wonder if I can make it with normal whipped cream? Not exactly healthy/low cal that way, but..... :ohwell: Hey, I managed to pass up Pepperidge Farms Pumpkin Cheesecake softbake cookies in Walmart today, I was SOOOO proud of myself!

Lilchino: Love the spiral sliced ham idea, I'm gonna have to try that!

Well, I'm comparing Jersey Mike's and Jimmy John's to Subway, which I think is crap. Jimmy John's has bread that is INCREDIBLE, and Jersey Mike's just makes their subs the way I grew up with them, especially if I order it "Mike's way," which is oil and vinegar mix, salt, pepper, oregano, shredded lettuce, tomato slices, and onions. YUM. I did end up going there and getting a chicken salad sub yesterday!

Both places slice the meat and cheese right there, too, plus they use quality products. Jimmy John's goes heavy on the Hellman's mayo (my favorite), so if you're not a mayo fan, you need to tell them to hold off. I like the vegetarian there, which is made with provolone, avocado, and alfalfa sprouts. Very, very yummy. There's a Jimmy John's a little further from my office than Jersey Mike's, so maybe I'll have to order from there today  I can't talk about this stuff without wanting to eat it!

I don't know if the pumpkin fluff would work with regular whipped cream, either homemade or out of a can. Actual whipped cream does not hold its form well over time, so within a few minutes, I'd think it would turn into a liquid. I much prefer it to Cool Whip, but I figured the pumpkin would cover up what I don't like about Cool Whip. Turns out I was wrong. The thought of it actually makes me feel a little sick right now!

On a side note, I had that sub for lunch yesterday followed by a small piece of birthday cake, then a small glass of 1% milk in mid-afternoon, and I felt AWESOME by dinnertime, so I didn't gorge myself when I got around to eating. Usually I'm starving and feeling a little yucky as a result. I think when I feed myself properly (ie, not eat my "weight loss" lunch portions), I feel totally fine.
