10K question - is this feasible?

I just finished the couch to 5K program and ran my first 5K on the 13th - I have another on Sunday. There is a 5K and a 10k on 10/13 - my husband is acing this running thing and wants to do the 10K. I support him, but I'd kind of like to do it with him. Considering my longest run has been 5K so far, is a 10K feasible or do you think that's too much too soon for a newish runner? I was hoping to target a 15K the first week of November and the 10K run is part of that training plan, but technically the 10K the weekend I'm looking at is a week early..

My $.02: going from 5K to 10K in a couple of weeks may be a recipe for injury.
It sounds too soon to me.
I say do the 10K in November.
You've got the rest of your life to run longer races, don't be in too big a hurry.0 -
That's kind of where I was leaning. I guess I'm just competitive enough that I hate not being able to keep up with him, but that attitude isn't really going to keep me up in a good way either. Thank you!0

I think it depends on how you feel and your overall level of fitness. You are new to running but have you been doing other types of exercise? Are you in good shape? How old are you? Do you have or have you had any injuries? How did you feel after 5K?
In the end I think only you know whether or not you'll be able to do the 10K. if it is only a week before the 10K scheduled in your 15K training plan I would guess it would be OK but again. Only you know for sure. If your body is telling you its not ready its better to listen to it than get injured. On the otherhand if its just your head telling you that you can't do it then - would say prove it wrong!0 -
Well, I've been doing 3 three-mile runs for .. about 3 weeks now? The distance feels pretty good. I was thinking of adding a mile each week to my Saturday runs - that would be 3 weeks to get to 6 miles and a 10K is 6 miles but wouldn't have a step-back week. In my training plan that 10K week is supposed to be a step back week back to 4, then 6 miles the following week.
Oh and re: fitness - I can't say I've been a fitness buff for that long or anything but I've been working out for about ... 5-6 months now I think? I do a lot of dancing which is pretty cardio intensive, I've done a few Jillian Michaels programs. I feel pretty good after my 5Ks other than mad I'm so darn slow! :P I'm 28, no injuries.0 -

Running is one of those things where the journey is as much fun as the destination.

I would wait on the 10K unless you do a run-walk program for it. Run 4 minutes, walk 1 minute. That will lesson the pressure on the body and joints and still allow you to do the 10K but make sure you do at least a 5.5 mile run using that method so you know how it'll feel and give your body and joints time to understand what it feels like to be running/moving for that distance and time. I jumped right into 10K training the day after my first 5K this past spring. Exactly 6 weeks apart. For me it was just getting it done. I was not trying to keep up with anyone else's pace or time.
During my 10K training I ran past the 10k distance for a flat 7 miles 2 weeks before then tapered down. Making the actual race doable.0 -
I'm just going to do a take it as I feel it approach - I did a four mile run tonight and just felt awesome. I felt like I could have gone further. So I'm just going to wait and see0

Did a 5.1 - feeling pretty good! That's the furthest I've ever run, and again, feel like I could have done more! I think I'll go for the 10K next weekend and take my step back weekend the week after - that shouldn't be too bad I don't think. If it comes to it next week I'll just walk more during it but I feel pretty darn good.0

Do what feels right. If it hurts slow down. I just ran my 4th half -marathon today and feel so good!! You GO GIRL!!!!!!!0

You could over train trying to do this so I would be careful. Stick to your training plan. You longest run in two weeks will probably be about 4 miles.
You can do the race, just don't push it. Go slowly and walk during some of it and you should be okay. Try not to go beyond your training plan. Keep your mileage low the week of the race. If you're feeling any sense on oncoming injury, then don't do it and take extra time to recovery the days after the race.

The 10k is on 10/13 which will be 4miles Mon, 3 miles Wed, skip Friday to run the 10K Saturday, then the following week I'm going to step back and just do 3 three-mile runes. I have been doing run walk intervals - usually run a mile walk a quarter mile roughly since I'm a newer runner. I know I /can/ run the distance without walk intervals but since my body is still adjusting I figured better safe than sorry.0

Start of last month my longest run was 3km...... by mid month I was at 11-12km. Dropped back down to 10km each day I run now cause it just works out that way from the route I do.
Not hard to do, if you want to push it hard & I do mean HARD. 10km is nothing to be easy about at all, it's tough.0 -
Well my 10k was tonight, but it rained around 4pm and although the race was scheduled for 8pm they cancelled due to inclement wether. It's been rescheduled to 10/27 but. My friend who were staying with has an awesome trail route in her apartment, hilly but really nice, so I ran 10k anyway even if it wasn't an official race had an awesome run too despite how hilly it was compared to my normal flat-ish runs!
