Hi,

I'm fairly new to the fitness world. I began last Feb and have since lost ~26 lbs. I've tried a little bit of everything from Jillian Michaels videos, P90x, running, kickboxing, zumba, etc. I've used dumbbells and such in my workouts but never got to the point where I was lifting "heavy."

I have been interested in stronglift 5x5 for a while now. It's simple and to the point. I will be meeting with a PT tomorrow morning to show me how to use the free-weight equipment properly so i dont kill myself.

I do not expect to start out with much more than the barbell at first, nor do I have a workout partner. The session tomorrow is a one time thing- I can't afford a PT. To be honest I don't even want one. I just need to get the form down- from there I have enough discipline to correct myself.

I would love some new-by advice and encouragement! I'm a bit timid of the gym in general, but this will not stop me! Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Would also love some fellow stronglift pals!!!

Thank you :)

Amber - warrior in training;)

I'm going to stalk the replies you get, because I almost posted the exact same topic. Lay on the advice!

I just started, but I welcome any new friends! I am going to do my 2nd workout today and I am stoked! I was really sore after the first work out even though it felt like it was almost too easy while I was doing it!!

    Hi and welcome!

This is my 7th week of Stronglifts and I love it. I was a little intimidated at first, too, and just started with the bar, but I've made a lot of progress. And that intimidation factor went away after a few times -- now I just walk in like I own the place and do my thing.

YouTube has been an invaluable resource for "learning" how to get the form down for me. Don't be afraid to progress slower than you think you "should" just to make sure your form is perfect. I recently deloaded on squats just to focus on form because my knees were kinda sorta caving in a little on the way up from my heaviest squats. I figure this is a lifelong journey, not a race, so as long as I am making some kind of progress it's all good.

Anyway, good luck! I think you'll love it. Feel free to friend me if you'd like. :)

Hmm.. my post is probably a little bit useless because I don't have any advice except for to keep going back. I'm only on week 2 of Stronglifts and I already love it. It's a good idea to have the first time consultation with someone that can watch and correct you on your form, but ultimately it is up to you to make sure your form is good. I guess that's why there are mirrors in the gym.. and I always thought it was so I could check myself out.

I agree with the above poster; there are lots of YouTube videos on form that would be useful for you to watch.

I am getting ready to start...still nervous about starting without a trainer. Although I'm interested in doing the StrongLifts program, I am reading Starting Strength to learn about technique (on kindle for iphone which leaves a little to be desired) and I only want t trainer who can teach form a la Rippetoe. Don't know if you guys find this but most personal trainers these days seem to promote things like BOSU ball, TRX, HIIT and all the new age stuff. Hard to find an old school barbell trainer. Then again maybe I don't frequent the types of gyms that old school lifters use! So I guess I'll rely on your friend and mine, Ms. YouTube, and hopefully find a likeminded training buddy at the gym to help correct my form. Maybe tomorrow night...

    Good luck fellow newbies!

Hi ladies! I'm meeting with a trainer tomorrow to get me started on the program. Just wondering if you had any advice? I've printed off the intro posting on here as well as info from the Stronglifts website on warm ups to show her. Anything in particular I should tell the trainer?

How are you finding it? I've heard/seen so many great results from this program I am excited to start! I'm also doing JM Body Revolution and I run too.

    Thanks for any advice!
  • I had the same issues with trainers wanting to push their agenda aka fitness BS. When I decided to do 5x5 I walked back into the gym, asked for the fitness manager, and TOLD him I was doing 5x5 and needed a spotter only. If they had one with great insight into technique and form great! otherwise I was planing to follow video's like Riptoe.
There was a moment of silence and he took the job. he now LOVES 5x5 and wants the other trainers to learn and utilize it... Be stong in personality like you want to be physicaly
