There's a new video with slightly different instruction for the overhead press at: http://startingstrength.com/index.php/site/platform_learning_to_press_2.0

for anyone interested or having trouble with this lift.

    Bump for later!
  • God knows I can use all the help I can get on this ! I'm still suffering at 55

And while I totally respect Riptoe, I have to say.....look at that gut

Interesting instruction. I might try it. Just an aside, he is shaped like my husband, and even has the same facial hair, is only a few years older, and has the same name! I guess the years pile up in the front on a guy...

I tried this yesterday and I was able to get through all 5 sets at 65 - victory! I didn't really feel the "bounce" and I don't think I quite had the movement down, but I think it helped a bit.

And...I totally agree about Rippetoe. You can't out-exercise a bad diet, but as far as role models go...he's not inspirational.

But Rippetoe's thing has never been about having low body fat.

If you read his stuff, he doesn't address that at all. His thing is getting strong.

    And for that, he's great.

Keep in mind he is not a bodybuilder lol. He's all about getting strong.

I might have to give this a try next time i do OHPs!

Not really, it looks more to me like, given his stage of life, some good meals are catching up... Too much work, too many sausages, not enough time to burn off the calories... Just guessing. I know what happens around here.

Although if you are going to teach it, you probably should try to be fit.
