Thoughtful THURSDAY

"Always desire to learn something useful." -- Sophocles

It's never too late to change, and it starts with our mindset. Just because that's how something has always been doesn't make it relevant or true today. Are you in a learning state of mind?

What's the best nutrition/eating myth you've debunked on your journey so far?

Replies

  • That a cheat meal or cheat day will not derail you. I have one a week and have lost 9 pounds over the last 12 weeks. And it was m y last 10 pounds I was trying to get rid of, which is suppose to be the hardest. It did take 12 weeks so there is some truth to that.

    "A calorie is a calorie."

If losing weight is your only goal, then this is true. You can eat 1500 calories worth of McDonald's or 1500 calories of fish or 1500 calories of chips & salsa or 1500 calories of broccoli, and you will lose weight. But if overall health and long life is your goal, you must eat the right calories.

My newest quote I am loving "Whether you think you can or think you can't, you're always right."
This is so true-when you get your mind in the right place-anything is possible. I can and will make the best choices for me-we all have this powerful mind that does assist us if we let it.

That you can't lose weight after menopause. I'm 56 and lost 85 pounds.
And that all women get that "middle age spread" after age 50.

    You asked! I answered:
That YES, I get plenty of protein from a vegetarian diet!! I do get so tired of answering that one over and over to misinformed friends and family.
That YES, I get plenty of calcium from a diet with no dairy, too. There are a lot of myths out there about "how much protein is enough?" and that we must drink milk for strong bones. (I'm completely lactose intolerant.)
And finally, YES, you can live healthily on less than 500mg of sodium a day! My sodium intake (formerly in the 2000mg range and above) was way too much for me, causing joint pain, high BP, and headaches almost every morning, as well as excess water weight, puffy eyes, and fat ankles. All that is gone just by dropping my sodium intake.
    I'm a happy camper!

This, too. I'm 57 and have lost (again) about 43 of the 60 lbs I need to lose. It can be done. And you don't have to be an exercise fiend to do it. I can't do much about my age but I can do something about my weight and my health every day.

I had a friend post this quote yesterday and it really resonated with me,

"We will remain the same, until the pain of remaining the same is greater than the pain of change."

^^^^^ agree I hear commercials telling us how hard after menopause it is to lose weight trying to sell some product. Not true at all and I am so thankful for that and glad WE are showing them it is NOT True.

My best eating myth I've debunked on my journey so far is always feeling that carbohydrates was totally off limits (after trying the Atkins years ago) portion control!

For me, I have found measuring some things are important...like my cereal in the morning and milk. Keeping portions to 1/2 cup or 1 cup depending what it is (veggies, fruit...) helps me retrain my thinking and satisfaction after a meal.

Oh my gosh me too. If one more person asks me and expects me to say surgery or pills I'm going to scream. I lost over 60lbs by working my butt off and I do mean literally my butt is gone. :)

I just honestly didn't think at my age and as much weight as I had gained that I would EVER be able to lose it. Wow, was I wrong!!! So thankful :-). Still have a ways to go but, wow! Still can't believe almost 45 lbs is gone in a year! AND, I am heading into menopause. There is life after 40! and 45, and hopefully 50 :-)

So true! I think the reason so many middle aged women are heavy is because they get a bit too comfortable in life, and maybe even a little lazy. I know that was true for me.

Do you have a BIG WHY? What makes you spring out of bed every morning? Why do you do what you do?

    Happy Thursday, everybody!

    Peace,

Here are the physical things that get me out of bed every morning: Getting a last snuggle with my husband while we listen to NPR (he likes to talk back to the radio, lol!) I feel so good physically that I *always* wake up before the alarm. (This is new--rarely happened before MFP.) My cat is hungry and wants his breakfast. And it feels really good to burn some calories before breakfast. The thought of having to function on less than 1600 calories for the day if I *don't* get enough exercise is really motivating. Can't eat a lot (and still lose consistently) if I don't move a lot.

Soul-related reasons that get me up: my life purpose is to bring more beauty to the world through my music. Improvising music for the dancers never gets old. You know those moments when everything fits together just right and you get goose bumps? Happens to me at least once every day...while I'm getting paid for it.

Today is my birthday. At 45 I am lighter, fitter and healthier than I was at 30, and that is despite getting married and having two c-sections to deliver my gorgeous boys.

What gets me out of bed?

Knowing that I am a better stronger person than I was 2 years ago. That I am happier and healthier. And reminding myself that "Everyday you wake up in the morning is a good day"
