This morning I went for my run with my husky. It is 5.30am when we leave the house so quite dark. We are also in spring, coming into summer, and the area we live seems to be a favourite with the ducks. I have tried really hard to keep her on a short leash when we are running, but today I failed and she caught a duck. It happened in a split second. I didn't see it coming. I didn't even see the duck - it is dark and was hiding in long grass. Then all of a sudden there is flapping and pulling and there is a duck in her mouth.
I managed to get her to let go of the duck, and it flapped off, so hopefully it is unharmed, maybe just abit shaken. God I feel terrible. Has this happened to anyone else?

Not running but Goober has snatched small animals before I have even noticed them being there, it has not ended well for the poor things.0

Way too many times I totally know what you mean about things happening so quickly.
My second malamute was the big meanie. She killed a couple of woodchucks, hurt a goose (but didn't seem to have hurt it seriously), and squashed many many mice. I know she's got more casualties under her belt than I know about because when my dad walked her, he would let her run.
My third and current one is more of a playful child than a predator. She has had many close run-ins with other animals, but doesn't seem interested in killing or even catching them. She just likes chasing them, and sniffing them if she manages to get close. She only "bites" to stop them from running away (she does the same thing with people when she wants them to stay and give her more attention). She won't bite slow animals like opossums or skunks; she'll just approach them, jump up and down, do play-bows, etc. When she sees a mouse in the open, she even avoids stepping on it as she jumps up and down in excitement.
Despite all that, she HAS killed a woodchuck once. So I wouldn't trust her with a small non-dog pet without constant, close supervision.
BTW, is it just me, or are mice TERRIBLE at running away once they're out in the open? They panic and move, without actually getting anywhere.0 -
I'm glad I'm not the only one. God I felt terrible.0

Mine are all killers. I seem to have a haven for rabbits in my backyard. Every time I let them out, they dont run out like normal to go to the bathroom. They are all crouched low and walking slow like they are stalking and then take off if they see a rabbit. They have only caught one and it was not pretty. Of course who is the one that has to clean up the mess? Daddy0

oh no! we'll just all pretend the duck is fine. yes it's happened with both of mine. the latest though was an already dead rabbit. SO GROSS when you have to get it out of their mouths. of course it happened during the afternoon on the road so now i look like a nut job screaming at my dogs to drop the dead rabbit and trying to pry the thing from them because once one dropped it the other grabbed it. UGH! needless to say after i was done i wanted to take a bath in hand sanitizer.0

Shadow caught a black bird that decided to use his water bowl as a bird bath. He was in mid flight...didn't stop him from jumping about 4 feet in the air and then he shook him to death. Over in seconds I was on a ladder and caught the whole show. I will have to say one thing no other birds ever go near his bowl any longer.0

Buck snatched a little chicken hawk right out of the air...he was just a baby. Fortunately we were outside and saw the whole thing and was able to get the poor little thing from him without any damage. The bird was in shock, but he was fine. I've never seen him catch anything else, but I'm sure he's found a few mice over the summer months.0
