Leg cramps and migraines

Hi ladies,

I am 24 weeks, and I've started getting leg cramps and migraines in the early morning hours (4-5am). Have any of you gotten these before? How did you prevent them?

My diet is pretty good as far as potassium intake, and I drink water all day long. I get at least 30 minutes of light cardio in every day and have not been undereating, so I have no idea what else I can do.

My diary is open.

Ideas?

I feel ya. My last 2 pregnancies I have dealt with migraines, butnot until the last trimester. I am sorry, but the only thing that helps me is laying down in a dark room. Even that doesn't really "help", though. Sorry...

I wake up at time with headaches and major cramping. It turns out that I am clenching my teeth at night and tightening my body up. I'm not grinding them so there isn't any permanent damage, but my husband can tell I'm doing it. I have to treat the headaches like you would a tension headache. A hot shower to relax, fluids, a tiny bit of caffeine, food, and body movement for the stiff muscles. It still takes a while to come even close to feeling normal. I used to get them in the afternoons. The only thing that helped was a dark room, a cool cloth, and laying down.

Last time and this time I had a lot of issues with headaches in the 1st trimester last time and this time (not sure if I would go so far as to call them migraines, but they were pretty bad with my first pregnancy). I just had to go lie somewhere dark and quiet and wait for Tylenol to kick in.

As for leg cramps, I did have that happen to me a LOT after the halfway point. Unfortunately it really did continue up until the end. I know you say you're eating plenty of potassium, but I don't know if I was or not - however, I did start eating a banana a day (or at least one/day), and it helped lessen the severity, if not the frequency. So maybe just adding a little more potassium will help?

Hi all! Thank you for your comments and suggestions.

I continued with higher potassium intake and have been walking in the evening, and it seems to be doing a little better (at least the leg swelling and cramping).

No migraines in the past few days, but I'm not holding out much hope for that. I've been prone to migraines my whole life.

Thank you all for the suggestions!

Heya! Just wanted to add that coconut water is really high in potassium. I used to drink it all the time before I got pregnant, when I was doing Bikram yoga. I found it was really great for hydrating and avoiding cramping (which I'm prone to). I haven't been drinking it so much lately though because I'm not doing anything as strenuous as Bikram through this pregnancy, and it has a high sugar content. That said, if you haven't tried it yet, maybe give it a go?? It's potent stuff.

I've heard the same but have avoided it because of sugar. I'd love to know if that helps!
