So the geek universe is now alive with rumour and gossip as to who will get the Star Wars directing gig. There's been a rash of official comments on the subject which are as follows. Initial front runner Matthew Vaughn will not be involved as he is sticking with his current project Secret Service. Watchman and Man of Steel director Zach Snyder said and I quote “I’m a huge ‘Star Wars’ fanatic. I just think doing [episodes] seven, eight and nine is just a slippery slope. It’s a whole other mythological experiment I’m excited to see, but it’s a lot of effort.” Which I have to admit is very honest of the guy. He's an decent guy working with what he has and more power to him. Steven Spielberg has said a firm thanks but no thanks and Quentin Tarantino came out with a statement that was utter gibberish and I'm not sure I can get my head around it. The gist of it seemed to be no, not interested.
So where does that leave us. Of the three directors approached and shown the 40 page treatment Spielberg said no. That leaves Brad Bird and J.J Abrams both of whom I think would be excellent and would make a fantastic Star Wars film. Can you imagine one man in control of both the Star Wars and Star Trek franchise?!

i dont want Spielberg to be within 100 feet of the star wars franchise. and Abrams seems like a decent choice but he'd be spread too thin.0

Abrams has said as much and has rulled himself out of the running. He can't handle the Trek movies and his various tv shows along with Star Wars. Speilberg has now said it's not a genre he has any interest in anymore. I think he got burned by the reaction to that last Indiana Jones movie!0 -

From what I remember of the movie commentary, it seemed like the whole "Let's add some aliens!" thing was more of a Lucas idea.0 -

*Gasp* :noway: There is no 4th Indiana Jones movie. It has been completely ereased from my mind and no longer exsists.....:grumble:0 -
Latest update in the issue that has the geek world buzzing is a bit of a downer. Brad Bird has fully ruled himself out of directing and seemed very luke warm on the idea. Current favourite is Captain America director Joe Johnston who continues to pump out meh to average movies that lack anything overly creative. He's a bit of a Speilberg/Lucas stooge (see Jurrasic Park 3) and is likely to do what he's told. He started out his career working with Lucas on the original Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark so it makes sense that he would be a front runner. My other issue with it is that Johnston at age 62 is only 6 years younger than George Lucas which rather goes against Lucus's claims that he wants to pass Star Wars on to a "New Generation" of creative talent!0
