aaahhhh Tri=Triathlon.... I get it, duh...
(and I'm guessing Sprint means you do them fast and for not too long of distances.....)

    interesting..

    yea,

    it's like 1/4 mile swim
    12 mile bike (distances vary)

I started doing triathlons this summer and I LOVE them... totally hooked.... since you're training for three sports swim, bike, run... you never get bored!!!! The Baxter Y has a training group, so much FUN!!! I did Tri Indy, Muncie, Go Girl and Lake Lemon... Let me know if you have questions, I'd love to help... I'm a newbie so I can ask my coach if I don't know the answer or if you want his info I can pass it along - he's great !!! I love that I see every shape, size, age and skill level at the races... they're just great.

What kind of bike do you need? Mine is a hybrid type... would that be suitable? Or do you need a pure road or trail bike? Does it depend on the Tri? Do some have road courses, then others have trail courses?

I have a road bike but many people use hybrid bikes and do just fine. The typical triathlons are on paved surfaces for the most part. Xterra triathlons are swim, mountain bike and trail run. I haven't done an xterra but I have a friend who has and enjoys them...

I will be doing sprint tris this summer, probably 2 of the ones at Eagle Creek. I did a few sprint tris many years ago and really considered doing one in August this year but wasn't quite to the performance level I wanted to be for spending that much on registration. I did my other races on a road bike but it's in bad shape after years of storage so I've been riding a hybird and probably will use the hybrid for next summer (but will look into refurbishing my road bike). I would suggest a road bike if you are interestd in doing longer triathlons but a hybrid will be fine for sprints. As heatherlsi said, they are on paved roads, and I competely agree that you don't get bored with training.

I'm saving up over the winter for a bike. I'm going to get the hybrid fitness type bike in case I don't want to continue with Tris- that way I can still use it for fitness cardio workout. I've been to Gray Goat to look- Gift Cards are on my list for Christmas! ;)

I guess my main question is how to get started? I'll have to look into the Baxter Y. I live close to there but we aren't members.

    Thanks for the info!

Hopefully some others can give good starting advice, I didn't follow any training plans when I did them years ago so I don't have much advice other than to make sure you train the bike-run, the legs are noodles when you get off the bike. I read a book about swim technique (by Terry Laughlin) and practiced drills but when it came to the open water swim with lots of people it was more about finding your own space in the water, at least at first. Here are a few sites that I've found today that I think are useful:

This is awesome info! My wife reciently expressed her interest in doing something just like this. I've since been window shopping for bikes. I now feel the desire to do a sprint tri and now I know where to look.

Sorry.. I accidentally posted that too soon. Anyway I love swimming/biking/running with the group because it has really helped me learn to push myself, I love the positive encouragement and it's a lot harder to blow off a workout if I know someone is waiting for me....

The Tornadoes also do team races... basically we all go to the same race, but it's great to see people you know out on the course!
