Any survival horror fans out there?

I have been thinking about getting the Penumbra series and Amnesia:Dark Descent...

Care to share experiences?

Haven't played any modern ones but loved the genre before it died down. Silent Hill, Clock Tower, Siren, Fatal Frame, Obscure and Resident Evil before it turned into an FPS. Those were the days.
  • I love the old school survival horror games...really the best.
RE kills me now. How do you go from survival horror to action fps and still call it survival horror? blech
  • Gahhh both of those games! I haven't finished through Penumbra but I have Amnesia...this is how it would go....

    - Play 20-40 minutes
    - Watch videos of kittens until I calm down
    - Repeat

They are great games and have a lot of custom stories made by the community. Worth the buy 100% if you are in to horror games at all.

I picked up Amnesia last year as part of a charity drive (several classic games for a donation). Haven't worked up the nerve to start it yet.:blushing:

    Never played RE or Prenumbra.

I have played the F.E.A.R. series and enjoyed it. Not sure if you consider that survival, though it scares me! I'm also a fan of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series of games.

I wish my lame computer could play Amnesia. But alas, it dont work.

One of my favorite survival horror is Dead Space. That story and game sucked me in. I loved every second, until it turned into action horror in Dead Space 2.

I compare them to the Alien franchise.

    Dead Space=Alien

    Dead Space 2=Aliens

    Dead Space 3=Expendables.

ZombiU is crazy! It's the definition of survival horror. It is literally all about how long you can survive. No plot, aside from gathering info as to what happened. The use of the Gamepad is pretty good. Try it if you have a Wii U.

I thought you had it already Cape....
Like I said, it's definately NOT Left for Dead. More like Dead Island, minus the people. It's just you and living each day trying to scavenge and stay alive. Nothing else. Play it in the dark....good times.

I hadnt bought any games yet. Sticking with Nintendoland until Black Friday (which...as fun as NintendoLand is, I need something new to play already).

The reviews of ZombiU scared me though. I dont know what everyone is expecting, but I was expecting like a "save your bullets because this *kitten* takes 14 headshots and you only got 5 bullets" kind of survival game.

The scores its getting is bad though. WHY?

Giantbomb has a 45 minute Quicklook for it if anyone wants to see what it's all about.

I haven't met a Zombie I couldn't take down with one or two headshots. But you can always use your crickette bat. It's only a problem if there is a herd of them. I try to sneak by, but if I have to fight, you can push em away and make a break. You don't have to kill everything. You just have to survive. Like if there really ever was a zombie apocolypse. I think everyone was expecting Left for Dead. Just survive man....just survive.

Genem30....my condolences. Get ready to be freaked out. Especially if your flash light runs out of battery.

I play Killing Floor... love it :D

This is an extremely accurate description of my experience with Amnesia. I guess it doesn't help that I load 'er up on the TV, turn off all the lights, and crank the volume. >.>

I have been forbidden from doing this while the bf is home. He can't even watch horror movies, let alone handle a survival horror game, lol.

It definitely made me want to pick up Penumbra, though. After I calmed down from the first few heart attacks it gave me, anyway.

Loved RE remake, the creators of RE0 can go die in a fire.

Dead Space 1 and 2 were great.

Yes, REmake was absolutely amazing! Cant say Im too fond of Dead Space, even though I've only played it a little. As a rule, I hate games that take place in outer space...they're so...bland. Walking around in some repetitive deserted space station...endless metal corridors, obligatory female computer AI, every now and then scenes of the celestial bodies...ho hum.

Oh and I got curious and picked up Penumbra and Amnesia...pretty impressed so far. I burn through latern oil pretty damn quickly though. Its a PITA to solve puzzles in the dark :-/ Glad to see these are true survival horror games. Very atmospheric, focus on stealth, cool physics based puzzles.

Anyone try the Slender (man) game for the PC? Just you as a kid, running in a dark woods with a flashlight only and you have to collect these pages of the notebook before the slender man gets you. Very creepy if you play at night, with headphones on in the dark. Try it!

I love any and all. No matter how bad. I just finished RE6's 3 main character campaigns. I really wish that series would return to the orignal formula. I have even played through titles like Rise of Nightmares on the Kinect. Fatal Frame's series is also a classic and such a different feel. When I go oldschool it is Silent Hill, Clocktower and even ones like Dino Crisis (RE with dinos).

A:DD is a real trip. I snagged up from the always awesome Steam sale last year. The game deff intends to mess with the player on levels outside of the normal jump scare stuff. Eternal Darkness was the last game I remember getting me in the same manner.

Dear Esther was another cool and cheap purchase I made on Steam during sale time. The game is considered SurHor by most and it was trippy. I enjoyed the story as the game is not really one you "play" in the literal sense.

Deadspace was awesome and the sequel was decent too. I also avoid space games thanks to Doom Syndrome which was mentioned by another poster earlier but DS was so gory and had an excellent story.

I have yet to try the Slender man game. I hear it can be pretty scary.

Killing Floor was cool but I only had a free limited pass and the game seemed buggy with players flying all over the place.

D was an awesome series that I will soon need to fire back up, maybe on the Dreamcast. Blue Stinger was also a good DC game.

Parasite Eve 1 and 2 are easily classics for SurHor and if you have not played them you need to.

Anyone remember a PS1 title called Juggernaut? It was more Myst like with horror elements. We used to play it all the time.
