I ran the Spartan in Amesbury MA last year, and again last weekend at Fenway Park. I also grew up on Tuxedo Ridge so I know that area and lemme tell ya, Apollo is not kidding about any of that stuff. It's a tough course geographically, which requires mental grit in and of itself, but the physical fitness requirements of repeated burpees, climbing walls, jumping over things, crawling on your hands and knees on tough terrain, carrying heavy things over long-ish distances.... it's tough.
There were two pieces in the Fenway Spartan that made me want to give up: the sandbag carry started at the bottom of the bleachers, went up and over to the Green Monster, down and up and over again. It also occurred about two thirds through the race. At that point my legs were jelly from running bleachers and steps about 5000 times (the entire 2.75 mi was inside Fenway Park... there was not an inch of it we didn't cover from the warning track on the field to top of the Monstah). But, my best friend took my bag and carried it for me for a half a flight until I was able to catch my second wind and take it back from him. The second obstacle was the final burpee station. **** doing 30 burpees (again) after doing about 200 throughout the rest of the course. Just let me finish dammit! Hahahaha.
It was so worth it though. Do your strength work, be able to lift your own bodyweight several times and remember, the legs feed the wolf, ladies and gentlemen.0 -
what the heck does the legs feed the wolf mean????0
-
It's what Herb Brooks said to the 1980 "miracle" hockey team when they were in training. Usually as he was making them skate suicides up and down the ice for hours.
I imagine he meant that if the wolf got tired of running and stalking its prey (i.e. his "legs" failed him) he wouldn't eat. Hence, the legs feed the wolf. I tell that to my footy girls during our sprint practices too. And I chant it during my runs to remind me why I keep going.
Work those legs, because the legs feed the wolf.0 -
Ohhhh I thought if I was too slow, the wolves chasing me would dine on my legs... O_O0
