starting running

ok so I have recently quit smoking and im looking at starting to run. 10 years ago I ran a few miles a day, but in the past year or so every time I try I find it hard to breathe. Now I know alot of that was due to me smoking, and I know it will take my lungs awhile to be that of a non smoker, but all that aside what is the best way to jump into running without feeling like im going to die?
Anyone have any good tips for me?

The thing to remember is to not start out at too fast of a pace, but to also be able to push yourself to finish. When I got here last year I decided to focus on being able to run longer than the minimal 1.5 miles on the PRT twice a year, and I found that for me running outside is easier than on the treadmill, and when I first started running I would listen to cadences to help me keep pace pace and steady my breathing.
The main thing is to tell yourself you can do it, because most of the time it's mind over matter, especially since you used to run quite a bit, so you know it can be accomplished.0
