Hi,
I am very new to gluten free lifestyle.
What foods were you shocked to find had gluten in them?
What foods were you really disappointed with that you had to give up??

Fortunately, most of it's been junk food.
Licorice
Regular flavor Doritos
some types of alcohol (some hard ciders are ok)
some types of breakfast cereals - some brands of corn flakes
On the healthier end of the spectrum, soy sauce.0 -
I miss really good sourdough bread.
Very little surprised me because I'd been dealing with avoiding certain foods and reading labels for years before I realized that gluten was also an issue. The most annoying though is the hidden sources that are just not necessary.0 -
I was shocked that soy sauses had wheat in it! STILL trying to find an alt for that !0

RE soy sauce, our local celiac organization has given us information that there are several types of tamari sauce that are gluten-free. These include Eden Organic Soy Sauce, Kikkoman Soy Sauce (BLUE LABEL ONLY), and many of our members say they have no adverse reaction to La Choy low sodium soy sauce.
I say check them out and decide for yourself. The local organization says things from time to time that don't particularly work out well for me.........0 -
I bought a Tamari sauce today. The brand is 'Spiral' and it's only ingredients are whole soy beans, water and salt.

Bragg's Liquid Aminos...tastes just like soy sauce and is low sodium (well lower sodium than soy sauce). I think Trader Joe's makes a similar item too, but I'm not 100% sure on that.0

I don't have a certain food I am sad to give up. I am sadder to give up going out to eat with my friends. It’s been replaced with going to the bar and the movies. Sometimes (Rarely) the casino. I think Socializing is the hardest part of it yet.0

My Diet Dr Pepper, it has Caramel color which may contain gluten, but I feel so much better without it. Still miss it everyday. Also soy sauce was hard for a while, but I have Tamari now so that's all better.0

Honey, Kikkoman makes a gluten free version. I gave my GALLON or whatever I bought at Costco the "parade wave" and now have a bottle of gluten free watered salt. LOL!0 -
And oh yes... I will forever miss pancakes and IHOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After Eight chocolates. I almost cried. After eating a box and glutening myself. Then I learned the importatnt lesson of checking the ingredients every single time because ingredients can change And "Sour Soother" candies, those sour gummy candies? I LOVE them, and again, made myself sick. I never would have thought that gummy candy would have wheat. And gravy packages. I made GF gravy for myself, but its just not the same. And we eat a lot of gravy. Candy was definitly the hardest to give up, and probably the best thing to have to give up lol.
The most surprising to me was Rice Krispies. Why do Rice Krispies have wheat? It doesn't make sense to me.0 -

There are hard candies you can eat... again you just have to always read the packaging....0 -
Lindor Truffles. Stupid barley malt.0

Prezels... I lived for pretzels. I have found some acceptable replacements, but they are still not the same. I have found a recipe for waffles and I had a SERIOUS addiction goin for months, I ate waffles every weekend for a year, wore out a waffle iron and got a new one...AHHH, the little things that make me happy.0

I think it's the malt flavoring that they get you with on the Krispies.
And as far as pretzels go, Snyder's of Hanover makes a decent pretzel that's ok. The Glutinos are so-so and the Wylde (sp?) are pretty good and fit into carryon luggage well.0 -

Gluten free Rice Krispies are available in grocery stores here in the U.S.0 -

I can't even tell the diffrence between the gluten and gluten free ones. They are great.0 -
Nearly all chocolate and even when they are gf they are often still made in the same factories a gluten filled products so you still end up contaminating you're self.... very disappointing.
and soy sauces but treated my self to a very expensive Tamari sauce at christmas.
oh corn flakes and rice crispies which I found out by becoming ill all day and turned grey..not pale but grey.(it was the barley that caused that I believe)
And the most shocking one that also made me ill for a week and itching like crazy was easy cook Green Lentles.0 -

Milo (WHY IS IT MADE OF BARLEY >>), cous cous and most of all, tabouli! All those times I thought I was going for the incredibly healthy salad and I was just making myself sick because it had gluten. Most chocolates too0
-
Ehhh? I thought dark chocolate was ok?
No?0 -

No?
You need to research each brand. Some are ok----others NO WAY. I went to the Godiva store one day and they told me they do not consider any of their products to be safe for celiacs.0 -
San-J makes a great gluten free soy sauce. A lot of health food stores carry it. I found mine at Whole Foods and my local smaller organic store. If they carry San-J products, ask the grocer if they can order the gluten free version for you by them. They may be able to do it.

Milo? Really? I haven't had that in a while but it was a former addiction of mine. Darn it! I loved that stuff.0
