Winter exercise?

Are you an inside or outside exerciser in the winter? And what is your favorite winter exercise?
I'm not a big fan of the cold, so I like to stay inside. Mainly I use the cardio equipment at the y, but I'm looking for new ideas.

Bikram yoga is great! The heat feels good when it's cold out.0

Mostly indoors (elliptical and Bob Harper DVDs - love him) between late fall and early spring (whenever roads become safe {ie not icy} again) but do try to get out for almost daily walks (or snowshoeing if enough snow) w/the dog and goat.0

If you don't like to exercise outside when it's cold, the cardio will work, but being inside more can contribute to other unwanted things. There is more of a tendency to be more sedentary watching tv, movies, etc. than when you can get out in the warmer weather and work in the yard, and other outdoor activities. Also the dreaded tendency to eat more with sedentary time and the winter blues along with more naps. Try to keep moving and do indoor projects that keep you engaged towards some goals. High paced vacuuming, dishes by hand, home improvement projects, organizing and throwing away of acquired accumulated junk. Being goal driven takes discipline and rewards you with a feeling of accomplishment. That is why alot of us are on MFP. It helps us establish fitness goals, plans, and accountability to maintain the course. Eating and fitness is a life style, not a program and spills over to every aspect of our lives in so many positive ways. Be creative in your indoor calorie burn doing extra everyday type things having fun along the way and enjoy the quality of your surroundings. Hope this helps.0

Like the idea of staying active while inside. I should make a list of small home projects to keep me busy this winter.0

I keep it all indoors although I do like to go sledding with the kids. Running up the hills in the snow is a pretty good workout.
I play tennis year round normally. I belong to a health club that has indoor courts along with many other fitness classes to keep me moving and lifting. Right now, I'm not doing too much. I just had foot surgery for heel spurs. Stitches come out tomorrow and I will get back to lifting. I still have a few weeks before I'm ready for tennis again.0 -
This is something i do have issues with...I live in the dorms at a college. I only have access to the school food which there are some good choices, but the access to the bad food is too easy. Exercising is difficult too, because I live in one of the most snowy areas and the temperature is usually around 10-20 degrees on a good day. Any suggestions on daily exercise routines i could do in a small space??0

You are right about the food in a dorm. It is like eating at an all you can eat buffet everyday for every meal. My daughter is a freshman this year and has managed to lose 15 lbs. this is what is working for her. She sticks with a simple breakfast- oatmeal and fruit. Lunch is usually salad bar and soup. Dinner 1/2 plate fruits and veggies, 1/4 meat, 1/4 starch. If you make a plan I know you can do it.
For exercise: are there any activity oriented clubs to join? Finding others that want to get activity could help. Also make a walking route through your dorm up on set of stairs, down the hall, down another set? Or look into some videos. I have a couple of the Jillian Michaels videos and you don't need a lot of space to do them. Good luck0 -
For the college student - check with students in the Exercise Health program... many of them would be willing to actually design a workout program for her. That's what a friend and I did (back in the day) and we lost the weight we had gained and developed some super healthy habits.
I'm not a good cold weather person but I do love strapping on the boots and going to hikes in the woods. Plowing through snow and stepping over fallen branches gives a great workout. I try to walk at a local park. There is a sledding hill there too so I can walk while the kids are sledding. I have several exercise DVDs and exercise equipment but not always faithful about doing them and I get bored being by myself. I have found out that vigorous house cleaning does burn the calories. I found out I walked 7 miles without ever leaving my house on laundry day! I guess it pays to have 3 boys and a staircase.0 -
I do the JM workouts and my elliptical. I am with you I don't like to be cold. Hopefully by the time warmer weather gets here my legs will be strong enough to actually jog.0

Depending on where your at there is plenty of great exercise to be had indoors. My current favorite is racquetball. That is a great workout.0

I do a bit of both. Favorite indoors is Xbox Kinect Dance Central. I also have resistance bands, some small weights, and a mini-trampoline. My treadmill is out of action this year because grandmother is in the newer part of the house. If I plug it into the older part of the house my husband gets the honor of moving the washing machine so he can get into the basement and flip the breakers. For outdoor activities we like to go to Pokagen State Park just over the border to Angola, IN. They have a very nice toboggan run. All my neighbors are Amish. I'm hoping to catch the kids out playing if we get more snow. They have a horse pull a sled up and down the road with three skiers in tow. Totally want to try that!0
