Help! I've been considering going vegan for about a year, slowly teaching myself vegan cooking techniques and learning about new weird ingredients like nutritional yeast and quinoa.... which is pretty good!
I just read skinny bi*** and it was soooo good I read it twice.
luckily for me my mom raised me 95% vegetarian, so edging into veganism hasn't been a complete shock. (I am 18 and just started my first year away from home)
I like vegetables and have always disliked the taste of most meat. I had no problem with giving up milk when i found my new love: almond milk. Oh almond milk, how I do love thee.
I really want to go vegan, and I start out going vegan but then BAM I fail because:
I have no idea what to get when i eat out with my friends on campus. Do i pack a snack/lunch? How do I not be rude? awkward.
I LOVE dessert, which usually has cream in it. I haven't found a vegan dessert that I really like yet, any suggestions? It can be easy stuff I can buy or cool stuff I can make.
I live on campus and don't have a car, so I can't reach whole foods or other vegan-friendly markets that have "vegan cheese" and stuff, so all my food I eat has to be relatively "normal."
Is anyone else a college vegan? How do you do it?
Feel free to friend me
I could always use the support
Thanks vegan friends!

I'm in my second year of uni (although i've lived in a private flat off campus with my boyfriend for both years)
I'd suggest packing your own lunch, I do every day for uni; partly because it's cheaper to make it myself and also i'm allergic to a lot of things so it's easier. I'd also ask the people who run the campus food if they've considered putting out more vegan options (it can't hurt to ask and raise awareness).
I love dessert and sweet things too! You've just got to change your sweet tooth from milk chocolate/dairy/whatever you normally have to vegan things... I love dried apricots and dates (deglet noor are my favourite) and they're easy to transport too. Also I don't know what alternative you might have outside of the UK but I love alpro soya's dessert pots (in chocolate/vanilla/caramel flavours) as they hit the sweet spot, feel really indulgent but are between 100-120 calories.
Could you order online and get more niche foods delivered to your accommodation? Or get an awesome family member to send you some? (;0 -

A while ago I got a book at the library that was about being Vegan in college. I forget the name but you could always search by topic. I'm not fully vegan (not even fully veg yet) but I was, and for me I had to realize that if people are offended by my food choices then that is not my fault. Just because meat eating is "the norm" doesn't mean that it can't be offensive to some people so why do vegans have to be the ones apologizing for their eating choices?
I have also found that with eating out most things can be altered slightly to be made vegan. Very few places here had vegan options so I would order things like eggplant parm without cheese (sometimes there's egg or milk in the badder so ordering grilled rather than fried helps too), or add black beans to a salad for extra protein. We don't have a whole foods or TJs nearby either which makes me super sad, but there's generally a small veg section in grocery stores. Around here there's a very small selection on vegan cheese in the produce section at the grocery stores.
I had a few other tips but they have left me. Good luck hun! I'm working on getting back to vegan so I will definitely be seeing what tips people come up with0
