Ok, I'm taking the plunge into Dr. Who fandon. I've watched a few episodes of the ninth dr. & loved it!
Is this a good place to start? Or should go way back to the beginning.
Since I"m having knee surgery soon and will be couch bound for a day (or two), I need to plan out my netflix marathons.
Thanks a bunch!

I would always say to people if you want to start watching Doctor Who always start with a Regeneration, then you have a new actor and a new doctor to with a new start. However you never see The Doctor regenerate from 8th to 9th but the start of the reboot in 2005 gives you a good place to start.0

Depends how deep you want to plunge, you could watch the original B&W movies and series or just start with the 'modern' ones. You don't necessarily need to have watched every single series to make sense of the new ones
Plus you'd never watch them in two days unless you actually had a TARDIS0 -
I just started too but I just jumped into the 11th Doctor. I'll go back and watch 9 and 10 when I get the time. Man, I watch too much TV :laugh:0

That's where I just started watching a couple of months ago. I'm almost done with season 6 now. (being a football widow frees up a lot of time)
Liking it a little less since Davies went off to do Torchwood (also fun) but still hooked for life, I think.0 -
I'd say start with the reboot! If you have Netflix they have most of the new series.
Or, starting with a new regeneration (new doctor) is also a great starting point.
You'd made a great decision! Welcome to the fun!0 -
I would for sure say start with season 1 of the new series. Since you like 9, he's only in one season. Then 10 and 11 are essential Doctors to watch 11 is my favorite, but a ton of people love 10.
Once you're into it and understand the basics, you can go back and watch earlier Doctors. You don't really have to do them in any sort of order. The 4th Doctor is immensely popular, I really like the 3rd too. Besides, if you watch them out of order, it will be even more wibbly-wobbly-timey-wimey!0 -
thanks everyone!!0

Agree, start with the reboot (9th doctor & Rose) and continue from there!0

did anyone seen the christmas day special i really liked it and love the new assistant0

I started with the ninth, which got me hooked. I think it's a good place to start. My brother-in-law is obsessed with Dr. Who and has all 27 seasons on a little blue portable hard drive conveniently named the Tardis. I grabbed them all during Christmas and I am working my way through them. They definitely take some patience and many breaks between episodes. I'm on season 3 now...the first doctor was a real *kitten* lol!0

It was pretty good, I thought it flew by, hardly seemed like an hour at all0 -
The baked potato made me laugh in the carriage scene!
"Where is it?"
"Where's what sir?"
"I sent you to get the memory worm!"
"Did you? When? Who's he?! What are we doing here?! Look! It's been snowing!"0 -
Doctor:Go on say it most people do......
Clara: Its smaller on the outside
Absolute genuis line. Anyway good choice to start with 9th although I wasn't a big fan of chris it was good to see new eps. I grew up watching old episodes with my uncles (the Baker days particularly) but I always try to convert people with the 10th Doctor as David did an awesome job, he is my doctor without a doubt.0 -

Hooray! Welcome!
I started with 11 because the people I was living with were waiting for the second half of season 6 to start in August of that year. SO in the week before it restarted, I caught up with 5 and the first half of 6 to be up to speed with 11. BBC America was showing season 4 that week, too, so I saw Silence in the Library and Forest of the Dead and was totally hooked on River Song, especially with A Good Man Goes to War and then Impossible Astronaut. It was a good time. Since 11 was my first, he's also my favorite. I went back after that and watched the whole reboot. My next Who Goal is to watch as many classic episodes as I can find. I just started Torchwood, though. :P0 -

And Harry Potter
I always forget that one!0 -
The reboot that started with Christopher Eckleston and continues today is much better than the older shows. Those were 20 minute cliffhanger soaps that lack the emotional depth of the current series.
Nothing is better than David Tenant being quietly vengeful.0 -

OK. I LOVE me some modern Doctor Who and Ten will always be my Doctor.
But ... the HELL you say!!!! Classic Doctor Who rules, man!!!! Cheeeeeeese!!!!!! C'mon. Don't be hatin' on the golden oldies, I could sit and watch that stuff on Netflix all day.0 -
I always tell new to whovians to start with "Blink" then watch"Rose" and go from there. I started my husband with "Blink" and he loved it and is now terrified of all statues.0

This! ^
I first watched the Blink episode thanks to constant bugging of a friend then went back and started from the 9th doctor. But MY doctor will always be 10th for sure.0 -
I started with the first doctor. My parents are big fans and I watched the old ones when I was in elementary and middle school on VHS years before the new ones came out. I think the old ones are not needed to watch the new ones but there are definitely lots of references to the old ones in the new series (normally when a villain from the old series shows up again like with the Daleks and Cyber Men), also several questions people have that have only watched the new ones are answered by watching the old ones (like can the doctor meet himself (the answer is yes, there are several instances of this happening)).
*warning: if you only care about Dr. who because the modern doctors are attractive be forewarned the old doctors and companions tend to look more like the regular population when compared to say Rose, Amy Pond, and the 9th and 10th doctors.0 -
'Blink' and 'Vincent and the Doctor'.0
-
Blink first, then go back and watch all the episodes starting with Eccleston!0
-
That is REALLY good advice! Blink, then Vincent and the Doctor, then go start from Rose. If I ever need to get a friend into Who that's what I'm going to do.0
