When to Buy Maternity Clothes?

Hello all!
I am 5 weeks pregnant with our first child. I am SO bloated that my pants are already uncomfortably tight! I am eating very healthy, so it should not be actual weight gain. My question is...will the bloating go down to where I can wear my normal clothes a bit longer? Or should I just suck it up and buy a bigger size/maternity? I hate buying a bigger size when I know I will eventually grow out of those as well, but I feel as though it is too early to buy maternity! Thoughts?

I was in maternity clothes at 8 weeks from the bloating and stayed in them. I was able to wear my own shirts for a little longer, but not my pants.0

I'm 15 weeks. I did notice that the bloating went down around 10 weeks and my pants started fitting better. But now, I am starting to get a bump and my pants are getting too tight again. I think I might invest in a few pairs of good leggings and just wear those all the way through my pregnancy, at least until it gets warm and I can wear dresses, because jeans seem so uncomfortable to me right now anyway.0

You may or may not be able to wear your normal jeans again, but I'd advise something that is more comfortable for you. Right now it doesn't have to be maternity clothes, just some pants that are stretchy with an elastic waist. I am 20 weeks, and there are still some of these stretchy pants that I am able to wear now. I know from past experience that I'll wear them for a while after the birth too. Leggings, yoga pants, sweat pants, dresses and stretchy skirts are my favorite early pregnancy clothes.0

My best advice would be to get a bella or be band for your pants. That way, you can wear them unbuttoned, but save on having to by maternity clothes right away.0

That's what I did, and the band was the best $20 spent ever! I have a couple of maternity pants and jeans, but at 25 weeks wear mostly my regular office pants to work with the belly band.0 -
I will chime in to say that I hated my belly band. With a passion. I think we had this discussion recently, too - let me see if I can track down the thread! I know there was one on the best places for maternity clothes (since not all of us can afford a new wardrobe at A Pea in the Pod), so I'll try to find that too.
Stay tuned!0 -
Ok, that didn't take long!
On the belly band: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/818991-can-someone-explain-the-belly-band?hl=belly+band#posts-12293622 (I posted something in there about the rubber band trick.)

I hope these help! :flowerforyou:0 -
I have to say, I didn't care much for the belly band either. I did make a button extender that I used with some pants my first pregnancy that worked ok for a while. I took the band from an old sports bra and put in a hole on one side and a button on the other. I just didn't like the feeling of walking around with my pants like that. Dresses and stretchy skirts should work for a while if you have any in your wardrobe though.0

I'm 29-30 weeks and am still rocking leggings, dresses (a few maternity ones, but mostly normal flowy ones and long mens shirts with cardigans.
I bought one pair of maternity jeans and a few of the 'ruched' style maternity tops. I just wasn't a fan of the idea of wasting money on clothes I'd never ever wear again. I just call my maternity style bohemian, add a scarf and carry on
I guess edited to add I am lucky enough to work someplace I can get away with a more 'business casual' look everyday.0 -
The bella band (which can be annoying and not very comfortable) worked for me for a while and I would also suggest the hair tie trick: unbutton your pants. Loop one end of the hair tie around your button, then through the button hole, and then back around the button. It will keep your pants looking like they're buttoned while giving you a couple of extra inches.
That worked for me for about 5 weeks, which might be enough time to get you over that first horribly bloated stage.0 -
I just bought some on amazon...I like the ones that are full coverage...they go up over the waist. Those might be too much for the first trimester, but I definitely liked the two pants I got on there.0
